Here are all the players listed by ESPN (thought of as the most knowledgeable draft board by many) between Mayer (56) and where Mayer wants to go (AT LEAST 45 if not top 30 or so). If you want to make a case that Mayer is likely to go in the top 45, you should be able to show that he should go ahead of most or all of these players based on his entire upside and risk profile. That's a more useful exercise than putting up some random highlights or stats without a comparison. Of course he's an awesome player and athlete with a bunch of cool highlights or he wouldn't be an nba draft pick. We're talking about comparing his profile with other world class basketball players.

Luka and Juzang are probably useful comparisons because most people probably know who they are or at least watched Juzang play some in the Final Four. If you want to argue Mayer will be projected where he wants to be, these are the kinds of players he would need to be projected before.

Juzang would be an absolute steal at No. 50 in my opinion. That dude's a shot-maker who can create his own shot. I think he's built really well to succeed in the NBA.

I wish the same was true of Luka Garza, but the modern game doesn't fit his skill set very well. I still think he could score because he's exceptionally skilled, but he'd be brutal on the defensive end most likely.

For those who forget just how much better Mayer was as a freshman than many of the freshman mocked into this year's first round just sit back and enjoy a couple of minutes of highlights in the TCU game from a couple of years ago:

Thanks for posting the highlights. I watched until the end and didn't remember what happened...

We ended up losing 85-81 and Matthew ended up with 17 pts on 5-9 shooting (5/7 FT).

Not so speak for them, but more. Teams always want to roll the dice on high upside Euros instead of the more known american college players with a perceived lower ceiling.

Pretty much this. I'd have to actually go look but I would imagine drafts the last 10-20 years probably average at least 5 foreign players in the 1st rd. Teams are starting to reach more now with the success of guys like Porzingis, Doncic etc

I only trust ESPN because they hired away the guys from DraftExpress to run their draft scouting department.

The worst one by far is NBADraft.net. It's almost like they just quit trying.

He's not a first rounder. We've had this conversation, but he's not NBA ready, and his potential, while high, isn't so high most GMs would take such a chance. If he improves his handle, and shot selection, next year he could absolutely be a first rounder.

Yeah if you don't think Mayer's a lotto pick you're a hater, just ask BUCANDOIT. Then again he's the same guy who thinks JTT/Flagler are first rounders this year. That said Matt's a terrific player. If he comes back and dominates I'd imagine he's a top 20 pick in the 2022 draft

Please don't misquote me. I said Flagler could be a first rounder this year if he came out and JTT could benefit from another year of development.

I stand by my opinions. They are mine. However, for the record, Matt Mayer has never met me. Every thing I am saying is strictly about basketball. Can I be wrong, yes. I predicted Baylor would beat Gonzaga 91-76. We never got to 91, so I was wrong.

Butler gave a blueprint for the benefits of going through the process and getting feedback. That feedback became his list of goals for the year all of which he accomplished. Even if Mayer comes back, which I think he will, he is wise to go through the process. What he ultimately will care about more than anything is what he is hearing from the teams and perhaps other real experts he can trust. For example I believe their are several nba execs with Baylor toes the at would be great resources for getting the trith about where he is likely to go and potential to improve by coming back to reduce risk. And of course the Baylor coaches have some experience and expertise in interpreting and filtering what the mba execs say. How is panned out for davion Jared and Macio just adds to their credibility.

The advice the coaches gave him was to test the waters and if you're not getting guaranteed money your best option is to come back. I agree that is the best advice to give.

However, when workouts for teams begin and the draft combine is held in late June Mayer will be flying up draft boards. He is already better than most of the guys projected to go in the mid to late Lottery. He can shoot. He can create his own shot. He can create for others.

I don't know you can assume that. Nba scouts and even ESPN mock draft board makers know he has those skills just as much as people like us do that have watched every game he has played the last three years. I don't think he can prove much in a workout that is not already incorporated into his current status. It's not like he is at a d 3 school he is fresh off playing on the national championship game. His skills are obvious and well known. Heck the ESPN announcers raves about him every game they broadcast all season. I'm not saying he can't move up a bit based on good interviews and workouts but he has a long way to go. And hearing him speak I'm not sure he is going to blow people away like say jarred butler will. Maybe next year he'll grow in that area.

Mayer is a great player but he was not at his best in the title game. He played 16 minutes & had only 1 bucket for 2 pts, 2 RB, 1 assist & 1 steal. He was overshadowed by everybody else, even Flagler & EJ. We know he can do great things he just didn't do it in that game. I don't think that game increased his draft stock the way it did for Mitchell & Teague.
