TEXAS
July 4, 2017

"As the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team returned to campus for the summer semester, a new face graced the first official meeting of the 2017-18 squad.

Tasia Foman, a transfer from the University of Texas, joined the Islanders after 3 years with the Longhorns.

Foman arrives on the Island as a senior, but will sit out the upcoming campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.

"We are thrilled to have a player of Tasia's caliber join our program," head coach Royce Chadwick said. "To have a player who has competed at the highest level join our program will elevate our players to a higher standard. While she won't be out on the court for us this year, Tasia will guide our student-athletes in practice and help prepare them for our opponents throughout the year."

Foman appeared in 67 games over three years for Texas, averaging 2.8 points and 1.3 rebounds in 8.3 minutes per game. 2016-17 saw a rise in her production for the Longhorns, setting career highs in minutes, points, assists, steals, blocks, field goals and 3-pointers.

The 5-foot-8 guard played in 14 games during her junior campaign in Austin, finishing the year with 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 14 points against UTSA on Dec. 17.

Prior to her career with the Longhorns, Foman was the No. 24 guard in the class of 2014, per ESPN.com. She guided Duncanville High School to two UIL 5A State Championships and a record of 148-10 during her four-year career with the Pantherettes. Foman was the 2013-14 UIL 5A Defensive Player of the Year."

Foman becomes the first transfer in Islanders' history to arrive from a "Power-5" program and the first player to be ranked by ESPN.com in high school.

BIG 12
NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel
approved changes for all Division I WBB teams
14 June 2017

Moving to a 4-foot restricted-area arc in the lane for the 2017-18 women's basketball season. Previously, the restricted-area arc was located 3 feet in front of the basket. A secondary defender must be outside the arc and in legal guarding position to draw a charge. If the player is in the restricted area when the contact occurs, a block will be called.

Allowing teams to choose from which side of the court to inbound the ball after advancing it to the frontcourt after a timeout in the backcourt. Previously, teams had to inbound the ball at the 28-foot line on the side with the scorer's table.

"Use-it-or-lose-it" timeout in the first half has been eliminated. Coaches are allowed to carry all timeouts over to the second half.

10-second backcourt count will not be reset when the offensive team calls a timeout.

Officials will be permitted to use replay to determine if the release of the ball on a made basket occurred before the shot clock expired.

Coach's box will be extended to 38 feet for the 2017-18 season. Previously, the coach's box was 28 feet in length. Women's Basketball Rules Committee members believe this will allow coaches to better communicate with their teams when their players are on the other end of the court.

A player must place both feet on the floor outside the lane to avoid a three-second violation.

WEST VIRGINIA

April 20, 2017

"West Virginia's women's basketball team has joined the list of Mountaineers programs adding Pittsburgh back to the schedule in the coming years. On Thursday, WVU athletics director Shane Lyons announced that the Backyard Brawl will return to the Coliseum for the upcoming season, with the first meeting coming on Dec. 7, 2017.

"It's great to have Pitt back on the schedule," WVU women's basketball coach Mike Carey said. "It has always been a rivalry and we always had tremendous games. It's great to get it going again. We're excited about it and I am sure Coach [Suzie] McConnell-Serio is excited about it as well. This will be fantastic for the fans, student-athletes and women's basketball."

McConnell-Serio took over as the Panthers head coach in the 2013-14 season, so she has yet to coach in a Backyard Brawl, but as a Pittsburgh native, she welcomes the return of an old program rivalry.

"Growing up in Pittsburgh, the Pitt-WVU games were always monumental in terms of intensity," McConnell-Serio said in a statement. "Mike Carey is a fantastic coach and competing against his high-caliber program will do great things for us in terms of ACC preparation and beyond."

The two teams have played a total of 44 games in a series that dates back to 1975, with WVU owning a 26-18 advantage, including winning each of the last three meetings and five of the final six as members of the Big East Conference.

"Since I returned to West Virginia University as athletic director, my goal has been to reconnect our teams with our natural rivals," Lyons said. "This is a great opportunity for both West Virginia and Pitt to renew a fantastic women's basketball rivalry. I want to thank Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke, Coach McConnell-Serio and coach Mike Carey for renewing this exciting rivalry. We look forward to hosting the Panthers here at the WVU Coliseum this December."

Pitt finished the 2016-17 season with a 13-17 overall record, going 4-12 in ACC play, while the Mountaineers went 24-11 and claimed its first Big 12 conference tournament championship.

The Backyard Brawl will move to Pittsburgh in the 2018-19 season."

KANSAS

January 11, 2017

"It wasn't supposed to be this way. It definitely wasn't fair. Damitria Buchanan had wanted to take the short drive from Houston to College Station, Texas with her family, just a month or so later, with one or two changes of clothes in tow - not her whole wardrobe. One of 2005's touted basketball recruits, Buchanan scheduled her official visit at Texas A&M on the night of the Aggies' annual Maroon Madness event to celebrate the beginning of the season.

Shortly after the most devastating storm in American history ravaged New Orleans, another - more powerful hurricane named Rita - was barreling toward Houston through the Gulf of Mexico in late September. As Rita's path into southern Texas was inevitable, the Texas A&M coaching staff was pleading with Buchanan to reschedule her official visit which was going to coincide with the storm's landfall. The decision was made at the 11th hour and truly nobody was happy under the circumstances.

Buchanan can look back and fill the room with her indistinguishable laugh about being a high-maintenance recruit now, a decade later. Back then though, 12 years ago, stuck in a never-ending throng of northwest-bound cars on US 290, Buchanan had seemingly bit into one of those face-scrunching chocolates Forrest's momma warned us everyone's life is bound to have. You just never know what you're going to get. For Buchanan, it was a recruiting trip and an evacuation all rolled into one.

So, with nearly every belonging crammed into their car, the Buchanans slowly made their way toward College Station. Traffic in Houston is always stagnant to put it nicely. America's fourth-largest city is used to seeing its fair share of log jams on its highways, but nobody was prepared for so many people to be frantically headed inland at the same time. The last-minute change in plans also meant finding Buchanan a different player host to make her feel comfortable and welcomed during her stay.

Aqua Franklin, Texas A&M's quiet point guard, knew she wanted to be a coach when her playing career came to an end. Her coaches figured there wasn't any better way to prepare Franklin for the rigors of recruiting than by letting her serve as a player host. Only this visit would be a different kind of challenge. It took 14 hours - yes, you read that right - 14 hours for Buchanan to drive 95 miles from Houston to College Station. An impending catastrophic act of nature, coupled with covering only eight miles every hour, almost sent her over the edge.

"I was pretty high maintenance as a recruit and there were so many people leaving Houston," Buchanan recalled. "It was an awful, awful trip there and it was thrown together last minute. I was so tired, irritated and annoyed."

"That hasn't changed," Franklin quickly interrupted under her breath before Buchanan heard her comment and they both began hysterically laughing.

It still amazes the duo that the mixture of a hurricane and basketball could lead them to be tough and together before it was ever their adopted slogan. Their personalities couldn't have been any different, although they both have a shared love of laughter, competition and basketball. Buchanan is incredibly outgoing and never wants to act too serious, while Franklin is soft-spoken and reserved, but solid with comebacks. Somehow, someway, the two immediately hit it off with their ability to always poke fun at one another. Franklin helped land Buchanan as an Aggie for the 2006 season, although she didn't find out she was a large influence on Buchanan's decision until recently.

"That's the start of our friendship," Franklin said. "She didn't even tell me until maybe two or three years ago that I was part of the reason why she chose Texas A&M. I guess I did a good job."

Franklin is two years older than Buchanan - who is quick to let everyone know she hasn't yet reached the 30-year plateau like her elder.

"Don't worry, you're knocking at the door," Franklin quipped back.

They shared the court competing, making jokes and having each other's back day-in and day-out at Texas A&M for two seasons. Drawing on some of those fond memories with Buchanan anchoring the paint and Franklin orchestrating the offense gets pretty animated. Buchanan jokingly claimed her point guard was constantly getting beat off of the dribble, forcing her to always be in a position to slide over and help before she fills the room with a laugh. Franklin made sure to make it known how seldom Buchanan managed to block her shot in practices, and it wasn't for lack of trying.

Neither ever mentioned it while they reminisced on their playing days - a trait of their selflessness and blue-collar mentality - but Franklin went on to finish her career with 627 assists, good for third in the Texas A&M record book, while Buchanan completed her four years with an 11th all-time mark of 55 blocks.

The team accomplishments were what they are most proud of, not necessarily winning hardware, but the attitude and relationships they took away from the hardwood. In their first season they each chipped in to help the Aggies win their first Big 12 Conference regular-season championship. In their last year playing together they helped put together a run into the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

"We were part of some of the toughest practices that anyone has ever had at any school because that's what our theme was," Buchanan explained. "We were blue collar, the first people on the floor and we had to be tougher than our opponent. Because we went through that, we grew to have each other's back and love each other."

After a decorated career as an Aggie which saw Franklin earn recognition on two All-Big 12 postseason teams and an All-America ballot, she fulfilled her ambition of becoming a basketball instructor by serving as Texas A&M's graduate assistant coach during Buchanan's senior season. What they thought would be their last season together turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Franklin helped the team to a Big 12 title and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament from her position.

Due to her experience in the WNBA and playing overseas, Franklin was seen as a valuable asset by Stephen F. Austin's head women's basketball coach, Brandon Schneider. She also learned many invaluable lessons from Schneider in her first full-time coaching job.

"Brandon ran a different offense and that's something I needed to get better at because I played for a coach in a different system," Franklin said. "I wanted to grow in what I knew and that's one thing that Brandon obviously knows and helped me with."

Buchanan began her coaching career at A&M Consolidated Middle School while also teaching and pursuing a master's degree from her alma mater. The tight-knit basketball experience they had shared in college made both Buchanan and Franklin hope they could again one day influence the game together like they had at Texas A&M.

"We've always had that dream," Franklin said. "Even when we were at different places we couldn't wait until the Final Four because we got to hang out."

When Franklin moved on to be an assistant coach at Kansas under Bonnie Henrickson she made sure to suggest a name to Schneider as her successor before she left for Lawrence. Just like that, Buchanan filled her old teammate's position for two years and left in 2013 to help build Texas Tech's program. Simultaneously as Buchanan had gone to coach the Lady Raiders, Franklin was on a new venture at Mississippi State.

It was then, in 2014, they really began thinking of a dream scenario where they could work together for a great coach.

"We always talked about how we loved Brandon as a head coach and we loved working for him," Buchanan said. "We then said how it would be cool if we could get Brandon as a head coach. It wasn't something we always thought of, but it was something we spoke about, not really thinking it would happen one day."

Until one day, as fate would have it, it did happen.

On April 20, 2015 Schneider was named the head coach at Kansas and on May 5 he hired Buchanan as an assistant, particularly in charge of recruiting efforts. Her relatable personality and outgoing nature made it an easy decision.

"I believe Coach D is one of the top up-and-coming assistants in the country," Schneider said upon hiring Buchanan. "She is a relentless recruiter and has a unique ability to build and cultivate relationships with players. She will be a terrific role model for our student-athletes."

Eight days later, on May 13, Schneider officially named Franklin as KU's associate head coach. A quieter role model, Franklin would be relied on to mentor the team's guards.

"I believe Coach Aqua to be one of the premier recruiters in the country, and the signing classes she has been a part of prove that point," Schneider said after her hire. "The fact the she was a Big 12 Champion, led her team to an Elite Eight and played professionally both overseas and in the WNBA gives her instant credibility both with current and future players. She is a terrific teacher on the court and has a great feel for how to develop young players. Our student-athletes will benefit tremendously from her experience, expertise and leadership."

Going on two years now, the genuine nature of their personalities isn't always fun and joking. There's a time to be serious and exemplify the tough and together mentality. The competition Buchanan and Franklin harnessed on the floor together has evolved to the sideline and to the other coaches as well. It's never a selfish competition, it does no good to earn bragging rights if the team doesn't win. But when the Jayhawks are successful, the coaches are proud to point out why.

"I think we're always making each other better in whatever we're doing," Franklin said. "Coach Brandon breaks up the scouting and if we get a win and it's my scout I'm telling everyone about it. It's always a competitive thing with the overall goal being that we win and that our players get better on the court and as people."

As Schneider's lead recruiters, Buchanan and Franklin barely find the time to stay up-to-date on the latest in the pop culture and fashion high schoolers are interested in given their time constraints with practices and games. So, when they have a spare minute they like to give their recruits a phone call together. They might just be the funniest, most down-to-earth recruiters in the country given how they constantly play off of one another's antics.

"We are typically making fun of each other and recruits think it's funny and that's just pretty much who we are all the time," Buchanan said. "It's genuine because we are best friends. We don't have to pretend to be someone else at any time. If you are genuine it's recognizable and our recruits know it. They trust us automatically because we're pretty transparent in who we are."

The No. 1 selling point Buchanan and Franklin offer to prospective Jayhawks is a transparent, family-oriented atmosphere.

With the help of an easy-going staff, Kansas landed several notable transfers now making significant contributions in Schneider's second season:

.. Guards Jessica Washington and McKenzie Calvert are both averaging over 13 points-per-game
.. Washington leads the Jayhawks in assists
.. Calvert and Kylee Kopatich each have 25 steals through 15 games

"Tough and together isn't something we just say, it's something we are," Buchanan said. "It's a family. We know each other and we've all been around each other before. It starts with us and then it becomes contagious for our players to see it is a family. We care about each other and have each other's back."

Buchanan and Franklin are incredibly thankful for the sport of basketball. It has opened so many doors already with many more waiting to be unlocked. Both are extremely proud of their current jobs at the University of Kansas. Nobody ever could have anticipated a hurricane or basketball bringing about this lifelong friendship. That's why Buchanan and Franklin cherish the opportunity to be a positive impact on people's lives, while sharing the sport that means the world to them.

They each summed up the chapters of their intertwined story thus far in their own way. One longer and enthusiastically spoken. The other short, sweet and to the point. Only, for the first time all afternoon, there was no laughter from either side to conclude the statement. Just a silent appreciation for the unpredictable nature of their journeys.

"We wouldn't be who we are today if it weren't for us playing college basketball for four years," Buchanan said. "That's one of the things we learned; that basketball is way bigger than yourself. It's way bigger than if you're making shots or making stops and winning games. It provides way more for you in the long run that you can benefit from."

"It gives you lifelong sisters and best friends," Franklin said.

After all, you just never know what you're going to get."

TEXAS TECH

Lady Raiders fill two spots with Swoopes & Balcomb

July 5, 2017

"Texas Tech finished 14-17 last season and associate head coach Matt Corkery and assistant coach Ray Caldwell have since departed.

The Tech women's basketball program, trying to right itself from four consecutive losing seasons, announced a couple of splashy hires Wednesday.

Tech coach Candi Whitaker named Hall of Fame player Sheryl Swoopes director of player development, bringing home the icon who led the Lady Raiders to the 1993 NCAA championship. A few hours later, Tech announced the hiring of Melanie Balcomb as associate head coach.

Whitaker described herself as thrilled to welcome back Swoopes to the program.

"She brings a wealth of experience playing at the highest level," Whitaker said, "and will be an outstanding resource for our student-athletes. Sheryl's passion for our program and for impacting young players will be extremely beneficial for our continued growth. She is a fantastic addition to our staff."

Swoopes is expected to help develop each player personally, academically and athletically. She also will work with Texas Tech's academic services, sports performance and sports medicine departments along with assisting the coaching staff in breaking down video and preparation of game strategy. Her job description, according to Tech, also includes assisting the Red Raider Club, the Marsha Sharp Learning Center and athletic director Kirby Hocutt in community outreach while serving as an analyst for televised games.

"I couldn't be more excited about joining Texas Tech and the Lady Raider program," Swoopes said in Tech's announcement. "I am very grateful to coach Whitaker for giving me this opportunity and I am looking forward to working with the players and staff. My role as director of player development gives me an opportunity to do what I love and help the players develop both on and off the court."

Swoopes, who had her No. 22 jersey retired on Feb. 19, 1994, has been inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame over the past two years.

Swoopes, 46, was head coach at Loyola of Chicago for three seasons before being fired in July 2016 amid allegations of player mistreatment and many players leaving. In June 2016, Swoopes released a statement calling the allegations "reckless reports" and "false attacks."

In the statement, she said, "There is nothing in my behavior, past nor present, as a coach or professional that reflects anything other than structure, encouragement and respect for others."

As a senior, Swoopes guided the Lady Raiders to the Southwest Conference regular season and tournament championships and the NCAA championship. After averaging 28.1 points, which ranked second nationally, she was named the Naismith college player of the year and the WBCA player of the year.

As a Texas Tech athlete, Swoopes set 30 women's basketball records, including four Final Four records, three NCAA tournament records, four NCAA championship game records and eight Texas Tech school records counting the single-game school record for points (53), which still stands.

Swoopes was one of the first players to sign a WNBA contract and became a three-time WNBA MVP, two-time scoring champion, four-time WNBA champion, three-time defensive player of the year and six-time all-Star. She also was a three-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA.

Balcomb is 473-253 with 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in 23 seasons as head coach at Ashland (1993-95), Xavier (1995-2002) and Vanderbilt (2002-16). She spent last season as director of coaching offensive analytics at South Carolina, which won the national championship.

"We are very fortunate to add Melanie to our coaching staff," Whitaker said in a prepared statement that Tech released. "Melanie's longstanding success as a Division I head coach makes her an invaluable asset to our program. She knows how to win at the highest level. Melanie is a proven recruiter and will benefit our team in all facets."

Balcomb went 135-78 in seven seasons at Xavier, making an NCAA Tournament round of eight appearance in 2001. She's the winningest coach at Vanderbilt, going 310-149 in 14 seasons. Her Vandy teams made the NCAA Tournament 12 years in a row from 2003-14, reaching the round of 16 four times.

She has a reputation for sound offense after her Vanderbilt teams finished in the top 50 nationally in field-goal percentage every season, including four times among the top four.

"I'm excited to get back on the court and help Texas Tech keep moving the needle forward in a positive way," Balcomb said in Tech's announcement. "The opportunity to work with great people at a program with historical success made it an easy decision."

Balcomb played collegiately at Trenton State (now the College of New Jersey) and served as an assistant at Niagara (1985-89), Ohio (1989-90) and Providence (1990-93)."

Thanks for the Big12 info, Slimecap! Good to hear from you here! I found the OSU trip to Austraila and the new playing rules for women quite interesting.

TCU

Heart, In addition to Oklahoma State, TCU will also play in Australia during August.

"The TCU women will resume their practice schedule on Monday, July 31, and complete the remainder of their 10 practices prior to departing for Sydney on Saturday, August 5.

Three of TCU's four games will be played as part of doubleheaders with the TCU men's team, which is also making the trip to Sydney and Melbourne.

"What's great about this, and especially with the two teams going together, is that we are really allowing ourselves an opportunity to grow the TCU brand in Australia," Pebley said. "We love our men's team and really loved cheering them on in their NIT run last season. Jamie (Dixon) is at as many of our games as I've ever seen from a men's head coach at any school. His sister, Maggie Dixon, was a women's head coach, and his relationship with the women's game is genuine. He's a dad to a daughter, he knows how important the sport can be for a woman in her life, and he's a great supporter of our team."

Thanks, slimecap. That's news to me as well. I kinda wish our Lady Bears had been able to go while Kristy is on our team. I've been a big fan of Kristy since we landed her. I love to cheer for her, her energy and heart, and her interviews. She is great!
Although not a TCU fan, I do like and respect both their Men and Women's basketball coaches.

I have cut and pasted the Big 12 Links information from my page 1 post 1 baylorfans.com original thread "Big 12 Happenings". This information is located above in Post #1 of this thread as a quick reference point for my fellow Lady Bears WBB fans. Information includes schedule/scores links, twitter links and roster links for all 10 teams of the Big 12 conference.

I also post a date for update so fans know when new information has been added/edited to this benchmark post. For example, 2017-18 non-conference schedules have not been released as of July 31 for Iowa State, Oklahoma State and TCU. I will edit Post #1 when this schedule information is released.

OKLAHOMA

July 22, 2017

"The reigning Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year in girls basketball has decided where she wants to play in college. McPherson sharpshooter Taylor Robertson, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, announced on Twitter this weekend she has verbally committed to Oklahoma.

"I really liked the coaches a lot and I really liked that OU has a rich history on its women's team," Robertson said. "When I went on my visit, it just felt right. I just wanted to go somewhere where I could be happy and still play basketball."

Robertson had a record-setting junior season, as she broke McPherson's program record in scoring average (24.3), total points (582), field-goal percentage (61.9 percent), and free-throw percentage (91.5). Despite facing constant double-teams and face-guarding, Robertson finished with an effective field goal percentage of 75.1 thanks to 57-percent shooting beyond the arc. Robertson also averaged 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.9 steals.

While she is a primary ball handler at McPherson, Robertson said OU coaches envision her playing off the ball, coming off screens and delivering three-point daggers.

"I'm still trying to work on a little bit of everything because I think I can always get better," Robertson said. "But I'm probably going to be working on my shooting range and being quicker on defense and being able to better anticipate."

Robertson has had a successful summer with her AAU team, Kansas United, which is where OU women's coach Sherri Coale first discovered her. Robertson impressed OU at a tournament in Texas, as the communication between the two picked up and eventually led to Robertson taking an official visit."
