The 1-3-1: Baylor Women's Basketball vs Lamar University

November 6, 2022

Head coach Nicki Collen and No. 18. Baylor will officially open the season tomorrow night in the Ferrell Center against in-state foe Lamar University starting at 7:00 p.m. Monday’s affair will be the fourth meeting between the two programs on the hardwood, with the Bears owning the series 3-0.

Here is the 1-3-1 on the Cardinals.

One Player:

While Baylor holds the deeper roster, one player that the Bears have to contain is sophomore F/C Akasha Davis. The 6-foot-2 Dallas native averaged 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a freshman, which earned her Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors in 2022.

Davis does a little bit of everything for Lamar, as she recorded a team-high 196 rebounds and led the team in made free throws with 89, to go along with 28 steals.

Three Nuggets:

● Baylor has won 12-straight season openers dating back to the 2009-2010 season (Loss to Tennessee 74-65).

● In Baylor women’s basketball history, the Bears are 386-227 (.630) against opponents from the state of Texas.

● Baylor is 256-1 all-time when shooting 50 percent or better from the field and 40-0 when shooting 60 percent or higher.

One Key:

One key for Baylor is to not allow the Cardinals open shooting lanes for three-pointers, especially if it’s sophomore G Portia Adams. During Lamar’s exhibition games against ETBU, Adams hit six buckets from downtown, while finishing the night 10-of-18 and a team-high 29 points.

As a team, Lamar shot 40% from the three-point territory on 10-of-25 shooting. During Baylor’s exhibition game against Southwest Baptist, the Bears were able to hold the Bearcats to just 13% from behind the arch on 2-of-16 shooting.

Conclusion:

Baylor is the better team, but they can’t take Lamar for granted. I expect to see the Bears control the paint and force multiple turnovers, which result in transition buckets.

We have little inside presence and seem content to jack it up from 3. 3-13 in the 1Q. 23-15.

I'm not a fan of Coach No-Neck A'quonesia Franklin. Didn't like her when she played for aggy either.

It's getting rather Sportatorium-eque surly in here with all the tickytack foul calls

Gillespie with her best Connor Galvin imitation in the lane, but couldn't finish at the rim. 47-31 at half.

Very fast, but with periods of perfection offset by stretches of sloppy.

I like some of our young players on the offensive end. We will have a lot more weapons this year.

We have to improve on defense, though. They are getting open looks, driving to the basket, and pushing our bigs off the block. Hope this improves in the second half.

I really like Owen's game. She always seems to be in the right place and handles the point when called on.

Most Expected - first game of season brings jitters and sloppiness, along with signs of hope.

Most Encouraging - (1) Buggs and Fontleroy! Great length and athleticism, great presence. (2) Andrews and Asberry; their maturity and confidence show, and will be a great asset this year. (3) Ferreira is a slasher, and may actually have a contributing role this year.

Most Concerning - Defense. Poor intensity, poor anticipation. With our length and quickness, we should be cutting off all driving lanes and contesting every shot against a team like Lamar. True that we don't have a shot blocking rim protector in the rotation, but we should be stifling on the perimeter. A defensive effort like tonight against an Iowa State, Texas, or Oklahoma, or against a South Carolina or Stanford, and we'll give up 100.

Bella and Darianna were great!! Bella is going to be a fan favorite in Waco in the coming years. She has a presence of hustle and a great will to win at all times. Her shot is great considering her form and then she was playing the 5 most of the night. Darianna is a lot more old school in the style of play but that is not a bad thing these two will be able to feed off of one another greatly in the coming years and I am so glad to have them. I was excited to see Jana but she was out with what someone said was a shoulder injury. Jaden did great having 12 assists I feel like she got great minutes and led the team well at the end. Blackwell is STRONG I can see her doing great things, especially the more she gets comfortable. On the defensive end and rebounding issues, I think having 3 of our post players out especially the main ones will hurt. Cat will be great if she continues to grow and the way her summer went and the way she worked her way into the starting line up tells me she picks things up super fast. This team will do great things super excited for the season SIC' EM

Posts like this are why people don't like coming around this board anymore. Just toxic.

Perimeter Defenders [in this game] were out of position due to having to drop down to help post defenders due to size mismatch. Not having anyone on the court who can guard the post without help always creates problems.

Players playing out of position defensively hurt. Having a 5'11 wing guarding the post took two players out of their natural defensive positions.

Get two natural post defenders [or three] back and the defensive situation [both interior and perimeter] is totally different.

Ask Coach Drew what the MBB's D would be like without Thamba, Ojianwuna & Lohner…….basically the equivalent of what the WBB faced last night.

Even so they are missing some practice time and court time with their teammates for chemistry and learning that is needed.

The big that Maryland had was Diamond Miller she is a guard. I think this is off of necessity. They play fast but I'm not sure if they have a true post that we definitely should be concerned about.

I believe that is the goal. Based on team defense shown early last night, I would say Bickle may have a starting role to quarterback the team defensively (and offensively) on the floor.

Maybe. It's more about wanting to have our full team healthy to play against a decent team. I have high expectations for Edwards.

Bella's play kind of reminds me of Napheesa Collier from UCONN. Just her size, athleticism, and will to get the ball!

Obviously who does not want that I am just saying we don't have to worry about a 6'7 center that is going to simply eat us up all game because we cannot match up with them. But yes when we get everyone I think this team will be great and will get better in the years to come.
