The 1-3-1: No. 21 Baylor (5-2) vs HCU (3-3)

After taking their talents to the Gulf Coast Showcase, No. 21 Baylor (5-2) returns to the Ferrell Center for a Sunday afternoon showdown with their fourth in-state opponent HCU (3-3). As we inch closer to the 2:00 p.m. tip-off, here is the 1-3-1 on today’s matchup between the Bears and Huskies.

One Key:

While Baylor is clearly the heavy favorite in this game, the Bears must use this as an opportunity to get better on the boards. Head coach Nicki Collen wasn’t pleased with her team's rebounding effort coming out of the Gulf Coast Showcase, so look for a noticeable improvement against HCU.

Not only was Collen displeased, senior forward Caitlin Bickle addressed the rebounding woes earlier this week as well.

"I think the biggest thing for us this week has been toughness, rebounding, being able to finish games," said Bickle. “I don't think we had any trouble on the offensive end. The big thing is just bringing that offensive intensity to the defensive end."

Three Nuggets:

  • Baylor is 3-0 all-time against the Huskies with all three victories occurring in the Ferrell Center—scoring 100+ points in all three outings against HCU.
  • For the 358th straight week, the Bears have been included in the AP Top 25 Poll. The streak marks the second-longest behind UConn’s 547 consecutive weeks.
  • The Huskies’ game against Baylor marks the third top-25 opponent they will face to start the 2022-23 slate — 22 Nebraska and #15 LSU.

One Factor:

Baylor must be able to avoid allowing HCU’s Julija Vujakovic to get in rhythm. The senior guard is the leading scorer for the Huskies averaging 13.2PPG. Against Nebraska, she accounted for three rebounds and two assists to go along with 11 points — against LSU she finished with three blocks and three steals while scoring 18 points.

She reinjured her ankle in practice this week.

I know potential means you haven't done it yet but I'm impressed with the potential of the freshman class. They are very athletic and growing up before our very eyes. I saw Buggs sprinting down the court on a fast break and she has "wheels"! Her defense and rebounding are fun to watch, and when things slow down a bit I think she will be a very good midrange shooter. Fontleroy's offense is coming on stronger, 17 pts today, she is going to be a reliable 3 point shooter. Good defender also. The biggest surprise to me was Abraham. She could be another Egbo, CNC says she is stronger than Queen at this age. I expect her to be a rebounding shot blocking presence once she gets more PT, looks quick, just needs time.

With a short bench we got contributions from everyone which was great to see! I'm still hoping Sara is okay and Edwards gains eligibility soon. I would especially like to see Blackwell back, as long as she doesn't rush back and risk further injuries. This year feels different but we could be very dangerous the more we gel.

Asberry goes O'fer from 3 again. She has got to find her shot or we are in trouble.

If we continue to use the two big lineup meaning Bickle and Gillespie and Buggs, she may find herself being the seventh man. Replaced by Sara in the starting lineup. She had a good game otherwise though.

By conference time I believe The two freshmen will earn being starters along with Caitlin, Sara and Jordan. That would solve our rebounding woes. Getting Blackwell and Edwards in the mix would also strengthen us inside. Love the progress I saw in Gillespie, Porter and Abraham yesterday.

Glad to see Abraham getting some minutes. Really like the Egbo reference from CNC. We need her height in the middle. These three freshman, playing in sync, will be dangerous.

If the waivers go through I think Edwards will be eligible to play before Blackwell is cleared medically. If Edwards can get cleared I believe she and Bickle will provide the all around stability and experience this team needs now. Edwards may not be the athlete Egbo is but she is a better shooter from deep and as CNC says "she knows how to play". That said I also think Gillespie, Porter and Abraham will make meaningful contributions this year.

Abraham will benefit from consistent coaching as she moved around a lot as a youngster and had lots of coaching changes. CNC says she is a good athlete and is a good rebounder and defender who will grow offensively.

She has always been a hot, cold streaky shooter - let's hope she gets this over with before Conference starts - certainty by Tournament time !!

Let's be honest, stats don't lie. I love Asberry and I know CNC is going to be loyal to her but, statistically this year, Fontleroy is playing better ball and has size (something we are lacking right now) to boot. Fontleroy is nearly 40% from 3 and has a 3-to-1 rebounding edge over Asberry.

So, until we can get Blackwell back from injury to help with rebounding and, Edwards back from whatever is holding her up, come conference time, I could see Bella eating away at some of Asberry's minutes.

We lost to Michigan and Maryland on second chance points on the defensive rebounding end so, we need the size and better consistency in shooting and rebounding. Hard facts when you grow attached to players.

I like the idea of having a bigger player at the wing but in one of her interviews some time back CNC said Bella was still adjusting to play the wing. I expect Bella's minutes to continue to increase but they may go up slower, depending on her adjustment. I just hope Asberry gets hot from three. In any case by tournament time I expect both Bella and Buggs to be able to play multiple positions well, offensively. Defensively it looks like they are ahead of the curve. I wouldn't be surprised if both don't make the all-freshman team.

They will make the All Freshman Team. It's a shame only one can be Big 12 Freshman of the year as far as Big 12 Coaches vote.
Bella reminds me of a bigger, stronger Melissa Jones. I had a conversation with Kim after the Colorado game when she did not play Melissa when her whole family was at the game. I asked her why Melissa did not play and she said something about she did not want to hurt the flow of the game. I asked her "when have you ever put Melissa in the game and good things didn't happen ? I was a recipient of that famous Mulkey eye glare. Good things happen when Bella comes in the game !!!
On second thought - maybe Dariana could be Freshman Of the Year and Bella 6th Player of the Year - wouldn't that be something !!!!
