Diana Taurasi has been lobbying to be the replacement to Auriemma for over a decade.
She will be offered the job.
UConn will also be massively slashing the WBB budget at that time.
UConn has been losing over $50 million annually for the last decade and last year the loss was over $56 million
Connecticut as a state has issues. .9% growth rate for two decades with all the growth coming from illegal (and a tiny bit of legal) immigration. Take away the illegal immigration and Connecticut is shrinking rapidly.
Also Connecticut is aging (7th oldest state). 5 of 9 oldest states in USA are in New England (Maine, NH, Vermont, RI, and Connecticut). Massachusetts is 17th and would also be Top Ten but for Boston. The entire New England fertility rate is terrible. Every state in bottom 12. Five of six states in bottom 6. New England is (for population replacement modeling) China only a few years later.

UConn WBB will fade and fade fast. Math is an unrelenting force.

DT name will draw some guard talent. But kids have short memories. In 3 years the question out of high school is Diana Who? She has a fiery, competitive spirit, and an uncontrollable mouth. ESPN will give her plenty of media space as long as she erupts every so often. She has no love for Baylor based on comments surrounding BG/KM spat. Generally arrogant and should have stopped playing long before she stepped aside. All said, if I were AD at UCONN I would make the offer to her as the best possible transfer of fame.

And IMO it would have a pretty good chance of failure. No real coaching experience. The name only goes so far as you say. I think they would be better off looking elsewhere. I guess if DT takes the job she would have nothing to lose. The one thing they do have that we, Baylor, did not, is they have had plenty of advance notice that they are on the clock. We got hit out of the blue. With Geno's health situations over the last few years and his age, they would be pretty incompetent not to have a plan in a drawer.

A highly established coach could very well be the next Goestenkors. I can't see it as being anything other than a high career risk for coaches who have established their own growing programs. It will certainly be a highly scrutinized hire. Not to say someone couldn't be successful there, but always being compared to Geno is a losing proposition.

Years ago, I had always worried about losing KM. I knew the day would come, just didn't think it would come the way it did. But I always knew that when that day came, we were going to take a hit just like every other school losing an elite coach and that the past would never be replicated, primarily because of the parity that was emerging in WBB. Now paying players has gone way beyond that to hinder a return to what we had frankly taken for granted.

While others will disagree I think we have navigated the situation as well or better than the other schools that lost their HOF coach where those programs fell in a ditch that now only UT has recovered to past levels and that took a decade and more.

The specific problem I worry about is getting turned over in the backcourt. If we are able to force WV to get points in the halfcourt then we should have success. I agree with your points in that case. But I worry about a scenario similar to the Texas game (on a lesser scale).

Nelms, yes, but not Brow as much. I think that likely has to do with the fact that the fanbase saw some glimmers of what Nelms can do last season. Brow is a blank slate, so we aren't as emotionally invested.

Yes. From those posts it sure seemed like he was either a family member or Summer AAU coach (likely the latter since the poster seemed very invested in her perceived success).

AP you indicated that UConn lost 56,000,000 last year alone in WBB. How is that even possible? Geno makes 3 plus change. Not denying your number, but I have no idea how one could do that. All teams travel and have staffs. Are they paying players that much??

Just seems crazy high. Texas Tech's whole football team was less than 30 million.

And they have to have solid ticket sales.


Please explain.

No. I posted that UConn sports lost over $56 million last year. You added "in WBB".

Ahhhh. That seems more like it. How much did BU lose? Bet that figure is unavailable. Very few schools make money or break even. BU financials will say we break even, but that is only is creative accounting.

I watched the last half of the game and Crooks' effectiveness in this game was much better than it has been according to the announcers.

A little while back I had pointed out that during their losing streak that Addie Brown had been out. Someone mentioned that she had only scored 2 points against us, I guess implying no big deal. The announcers talked several times that her being out had affected how Crooks was being played resulting in decreased production for Crooks. Her being out has made a difference. ISU has a game left in Fr. Worth on the 22nd.

It was mentioned that Brown was nursing the back injury when she played us, and participation in the game exacerbated it. I really didn't pay much attention to her during the game, I was focused on Crooks and Williams. When she scored in second half, it was mentioned that was her first of the game. Not sure how much she played in first half. We know how debilitating back injuries can be--recall Bartley--so Fennelly may hold her out until Big12 tournament; or if injury is severe, just keep her out entirely to give her time to heal. She has another year.

Last year pre injury she scored 6 pts in 32 min and 8 pts in 36 min against us in Feb/March 2025 games so we seem to defend her well injury or not.

I think the announcers were talking more about how teams defended against Crooks when Brown was playing versus when she was not playing, not Brown's personal production. This year, Crooks was more effective when Brown was playing than when she was not playing (lately)....up until last night. They did not go into detail.

Of course, how you defend makes a difference as well. We did our best to limit Crooks and took our chances a bit on the outside shooters. Tech last night tried to run the shooters off the 3-point line and Crooks ate em up.

Tech outhustled TCU down the stretch. Tech is somehow undefeated against the other 3 top teams in the conference but has been trucked 3 times by mid teams.

TCU: BUx2, WV, IowaSt
WV: @TCU, OkSt

One could argue that BU has the toughest road and WV the easiest road left.

I think you should also consider that TCU, WV and Tech all have to play at Colorado. CO already has beaten OSU out there. The mountains cause strange things. WV still has to have BU and TCU lose and since they play each other a split could happen.

I think there is a good chance we have more than a two-way tie unless Baylor or TCU run the table.

Respect your opinion, but I don't think it is as dire as you paint. I have seen too many ranked B1G and SEC teams lose to lesser opponents or flat out got blown out as bad as we lost to UT. TCU and WVU both lost to tOSU by 2 and we should have beaten IOWA.....all loses, but close enough to say no win is guaranteed for anyone.

If you changed the getting to S16 to getting to E8, I would agree. But I think after the first 5-7 top teams, the remainder of those in the top 25 and perhaps a few below can beat any of the others. However, I don't think any in the XII can beat any of those in that top 5-7 or so. I think the talent gap is that great. So, with 16 slots to get into the S16, I think the XII could expect to see 1 or 2, but of course it does depend on seeding and matchups.

I agree Iowa, I think our conference is the weakest it has ever been by a great amount. I'm not sure there are any teams in our conference that could make the dance if they were in the SEC. There are 6-8 teams in the SEC that I think would beat anyone in our conference just about every time they would play.
