I am still concerned about the fouls she is accumulating (5) in 14 minutes !! (4) in 14 minutes last game. I hope its her unfamiliarity with international rules that is a reason for her fouling problem - Its fixable so not really worried at this time - she is still getting a great experience and seems to be having a good time which is important. Hopefully bonding with HVL

I agree and didn't she have a high rate of fouls per minute last season? Maybe that's a reason Kim let DeGrate transfer.

Regarding the fouls, two observations: 1) I thought Queen had a couple of blocks that were called fouls but looked clean. I think anything close to the shooter's hand was considered a foul by the international refs. And 2) USA played a zone defense. There were times Queen got called for reaching or blocking, but that was more a function of unfamiliarity, I think as opposed to lack of hustle or over aggressiveness. Walz had her playing up high in the zone, too, so that she was often the point of attack for the faster guards.

I so appreciated Mulkey's defense after watching the national team play zone, but in their defense, I think playing good zone defense in basketball requires the same level of playing time together for the participants as good offensive line play in football requires. Lots of timing, passing off, and recovery issues in both.

That has to be one of the top production per minutes if not the top...those with more points or rebounds have have had more minutes.

She also has made 11 of 15 FTs. Hope she keeps this up.

I think Chibears2 analogy and comparison to line play in football is actually a very good one I think Naylssa made the right decision to return to Waco and I think Queen made the right decision to stay with the team. Playing with international rules should help her with a bad habit she picked up in high school leaning into the ball handler when she goes for a block. LC because of her volleyball playing days never had that as an issue.

Bigs that can draw fouls and then hit free throws are a nightmare for opposing teams! . Hope she keeps this up.

It was clear that Queen was foul-prone in the first half of the season last year, but I thought that she showed improvement in that regard in the late season and post season. Her ability to position herself properly and to be vertical when attempting to block shots appeared to me to be on the upward path.

It may be that the nature of all star teams, as national teams tend to be, has loosened the reins of discipline that she acquired last season, and if so, then she will likely regain that once the season is fully underway. In the meantime, she is acquiring valuable experience in international basketball and establishing herself as a formidable force when she is on the floor.

As Garland Bear has suggested, Mulkey fortified her front line and gained an additional five fouls to use when Erin DeGrate transferred in. I fully expect her to play a significant role for the Lady Bears as the season goes along and she becomes more familiar with the system and her teammates become comfortable with her in the interior, so the idea that she is a form of insurance against a foul prone front line
(NaLyssa Smith has also had problems with fouls at times), while likely one of the reasons for bringing her into the program, will likely become a lesser one as her role expands. I think that Lady Bear fans are going to be very happy with DeGrate's contributions to this team.

100.0% agree with setshot on all three ladies - especially DeGrate - I have known her since the day she was born so I may be a little (just a little) bias but I think she will be a major surprise contributor for the 2020 teams quest for another NC title.

This is her last and best chance to create some opportunities for herself down the road. I am feeling much more optimistic that she will be a great addition based on the comments of those who know her best. Thanks for your comments. Sometimes there are diamonds right under out noses.

I will remember these lofty predictions for Degrate. Maybe I will be surprised.

BUletters, I was not impressed with the Erin DeGrate who graduated from LaVega H.S., so you were not alone in your skepticism. She was not a goodr fit at Louisville and was not impressive after her transfer to Tech, reinforcing my earlier doubts about her role in a Power 5 lineup.

This last campaign, however, caught my attention. She had lost weight and seemed to be in good basketball condition, and her movement in the paint at both ends of the floor was what one would expect from a player of that size with the experience that she had amassed in both programs. In one of her appearances she held her own with Kalani physically and showed an impressive understanding of her role in that regard. She had rebounds and points, and successfully harassed Kalani into a turnover, while blocking a shot. Quite frankly, she looked like a different player.

It is my understanding that she has kept her weight down and has an enthusiasm for her task in this program. If that is true, we will be happy with the outcome.

It goes without saying that having another player of size as a complementary player should be of considerable value to Lauren Cox, who will be able to defend and to make plays away from the basket as she so often did last year, while still controlling the activity in the paint when called upon to do that. She is the best defensive force in the college game, and one of the best ever, so her flexibility in that regard should be enhanced by the presence of DeGrate, as well as Egbo, Smith, Richards, and perhaps Bickle, Oliver and DeCosta, as well. This is a very athletic and highly skilled team and we will enjoy them this year, but 6'6" of experienced interior presence should be very helpful, particularly when we play teams that have size in the paint.

Queen has good form, so I expect her to continue improving her FT percentage. She just needs to stay calm and consistent at the line and her shots will fall.

YouTube has a video of top 10 plays of USA team

Egbo (#10) is rated number 2.

Intercepted ball, all way down court, changed hands behind the back and layed it in.

My bad. Noticed her in the play before wearing 10 and then forgot to look at the scoreboard to see which teams playing in the next one. Obviously not USA.

Well USA hangs on to beat Belgium in the semis...Queen only got 9 minutes 2 points...I have never been a big Coach Jeff fan but I sure thought he did a lousy job coaching...if you are a true post there should be no reason you would ever want to play for him...he is going to run that 4 out 5 out stuff and if you are a big you have to have skills to step out hit the three and or get all your touches and points off rebounds and such.

He is so guard oriented. I realize that all these kids are great players just making the top 12 is an honor but man I would be hot if I was Brink who did not play this game and is barely seeing any game time action...especially since most of the wins have been blowouts. We were up 16-18 in third quarter and they let them comeback and take a 1 point lead with about three to play. If we don't get steals and fast break buckets everythin else is pretty much a jump shot or one on one drive and hope for a foul...

Not sure why Boston is getting the majority of the minutes over Queen. Through first 5 games Queen was more productive than Boston even though fewer minutes...Boston had 12 -7 today but she also got 15 more minutes of playing time than Queen and Brink the only other big was a DNP

That is the most promising part for me. She's developing her game and free throws are a big part for someone as athletic as she is as opponents are going to foul her just from slow reaction.

I agree Eball - Thanks for making my point about how ill a fit it was for DeGrate to sign with Walls from the very beginning !!!
She never got the development she needed. Its weird how things work out sometimes - Had she signed with BU at the start she would not be available for CKM now - I maintain as I have from the moment her mother told me she was entering the transfer portal and hoping for Baylor to call her because BU was her first & last choice - that Erin will be a force this year and make BU a better team.
Its going to be fun watching this team this coming season. CKM has the difficult task of spreading out the minutes but she will be better able to match up with the differences that opposing teams will put on the floor while creating nightmare matchups for opposing teams to contend with. The combination of power and/or speed that CKM will have at her disposal next season is almost unfair (Yea !!!)
