"Maybe youre projecting?"

Maybe, but I think it's hard to reconcile 'if someone strikes your cheek, offer him the other one' with 'Jesus wants me to smack down this guy on the internet forum'.

And by the way, I am hardly perfect but have not sold the OSAS notion in this thread. If you look at my posts from yesterday, you may notice I quoted the passage in Matthew where one of the servants proved 'worthless' and not only saw what he had given to another, but he was 'cast into the outer darkness'.

But maybe some people only notice posts they like, or ones they can attack to score points.

Again. Even in response to your comments i am merely turning the other cheek.

Not sure why attacking me. Ive made clear i dont have all the answers but have defenses explocitly for my beliefs based on what ive been taight and learned . Ive judged no one. Only shared my beliefs as i understand them and tried to make the explicit, logical case for them.

I wouldnt know your position on osas and made that comment in my last post more as a blanket statement in what has been a contentious issue for some in this thread.

So kind sir or madam, i again turn the other cheek, and respectfully state again i am not judging you or anyone, And will continue to read and share when the spirit moves me.

Interesting, I don't consider accusing someone of 'projecting' to be turning the other check, and it seems odd to me for you to bring up OSAS in a post to me when I was careful to post in a balanced manner, while focusing on what I meant to be productive discussion, but have a nice day and whatever hurt you I hope you feel better soon.

A mortal sin ultimately involves breaking God's Law. Therefore, saying that breaking God's Law makes you lose your salvation is saying that salvation depends on keeping the Law, a view which the Bible calls accursed.
1 John 5:16-17 distinguishes between sins that lead to death and those that don't. --> Death here does not have to mean eternal death, i.e. hell.

BusyTarpDuster2017 said:

We "cooperate" with God's grace by receiving it in faith; NOT by performing things or by keeping the Law.
So as long as we keep our faith in Jesus, we can do whatever we want and not lose salvation? --> Those with true faith will not use their salvation as a license to sin. Look at the very next verse after the one you just referenced, 1 John 5:18: "We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him." It helps to keep reading.

BusyTarpDuster2017 said:

If salvation is a "gift" that requires obedience, then it is not a gift.
One can reject a gift. If I gave my son a car and told him that he could drive out of state until he was older, he could reject the car altogether. ---> Yes, one can reject a gift by not accepting it. But for YOU to take it away after you've given it to him because of what he DID or didn't do means it was never a gift, but rather a privilege or benefit. Privileges and benefits can be taken back, but gifts can not - "for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable." (Romans 11:29).

BusyTarpDuster2017 said:

[Notice that Ephesians 1:13-14 says that you're saved upon belief - NOT by performing anything like baptism/sacraments/obedience! And notice that nowhere does Paul say that a "mortal sin" makes you lose your salvation.
In Galatians 5, Paul is addressing believers.

Verse 4 - you have FALLEN from grace. ---> Paul is not saying this to believers in the true gospel. This is a generic warning to the whole church, that the teaching that one had to be circumcised in order to be saved will cause people who aren't saved yet to be fallen from the OFFER of grace in his gospel. Paul isn't saying that true believers fell - look at what Paul says to them in 5:10 - "I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view (other than the gospel Paul preached), and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is." See? They had not taken the view yet, therefore they had not "fallen".

Verses 19-21 -

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. ---> Those who LIVE (continued, unrepentant lifestyle) like that are not believers. True believers still sin but they will always be repentant, and the Holy Spirit will protect them from falling back into that lifestyle. Remember 1 John 5:18??

Romans 11:22 - Paul tells the Gentiles to "remain in his kindness; otherwise you to will be cut off." ---> remain in his kindness which is his salvation of grace. And that is done by remaining in faith. Notice that it's only by faith, not by works. Is Paul saying that it's possible for them to have faith, then lose it, and thus lose their salvation? Paul is giving a generic warning, to encourage continued faith. But he isn't really saying that it actually possible for a true believer to lose his faith. By harmonizing this with all other Scripture, even words from Paul in other letters, it's cleaer that a true believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit and is guaranteed salvation. Jesus says that he shall not lose any that God gave him (John 6:39).

BusyTarpDuster2017 said:

1 John 5:13 does not say anything about obedience being required for salvation. Matthew 7 is Jesus talking to the Jews, BEFORE he died on the cross. And the "will of the Father" was that they believe in Jesus as their Messiah. Hebrews talks about the "knowledge" of the truth, but rejection of it, i.e. not believing it. You're recycling defeated points.
Are you implying that Matt 7:21 only applies AFTER he died? This may be the most ridiculous argument that you've put forward. Of course he was talking to Jew BEFORE he died; however, his death wasn't the qualifier for his argument. ---> Of course it applies after he died - it's referencing Jesus' judgement of the NATIONS. Did Jesus judge the nations before he was crucified? This passage is referencing the end of the age before the millenial kingdom. The people being judged are non-believers. The believers are the "brothers of mine" that Jesus refers to. They are not part of the judgement to determine entrance into the kingdom, i.e. salvation ("Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." - John 5:24)

Please find a scholar that supports this claim. ---> virtually every scholar is going to agree with me that this is AFTER Jesus was crucified.

For fun, I asked Google "what does Matt 7:21 mean" and this is what it returned -

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven..."
This highlights that simply claiming to be a follower or calling Jesus "Lord" is not sufficient for salvation. It's a warning against a superficial understanding of faith. ---> Nothing wrong with this - true faith is sufficient for salvation; merely "claiming" one has faith and saying Jesus' name doesn't save. That is completely consistent with what I've been saying.

"...but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven."
This emphasizes that true discipleship requires actively obeying God's will and living a life that reflects that obedience. ---> Yes, true discipleship requires that. True believers will manifest obedience (in varying degrees). But they are not saved by it, they are saved by their faith. Also, the will of the Father is to believe in Jesus. "The work of God is this: to believe in him (Jesus)" - John 6:29. If following the will of God meant to obey everything he commanded, then NO ONE would be doing His will - "Be perfect". No one would enter the Kingdom of Heaven. That's why Jesus is talking about believing in him, because that's how one becomes "perfect" - by being credited Jesus' righteousness.

"I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness."
This emphasizes that even those who claim to know Jesus or perform miraculous works in his name will be rejected if they don't follow his teachings and live a life pleasing to God. ---> no, it means that they thought they were righteous by their own actions and deserved to be saved. Just like people who say "Lord, wasn't I baptized, didn't I perform sacraments, didn't I avoid mortal sin, etc.?" Those things won't save, only true faith does.

In essence, Jesus is warning against self-deception and emphasizing that true faith involves both outward profession and inward obedience to God's will. ---> I agree. But we are saved by that true faith, not by the works it produces. That is the repeated witness of the Bible. "Your faith has saved you".

Please find a source (in context) prior to the 16th century to support the OSAS position. ---> It's in the Bible - Jesus, Paul, John. Pretty auhoritative and early. I've given all the passages.
Responses in bold.

No, people are seeing that you continue to be an asshat serving the Father of Lies nonstop for at least a couple of years. I'm sure Jesus is proud of your work.
If you guys would just put as much mental energy and effort into addressing my points as you do in attacking me, maybe the discussion can actually go somewhere, and you guys wouldn't keep getting called out.

You've demonstrated ad nauseam that you aren't worth the effort. Keep up the "good" work.
And yet, look at all the effort you guys put in.

And yet look at all the effort you put in. I've learned you aren't worth more than the occasional drive by post every few months to point out your ongoing hypocrisy and BS. And yet hope springs eternal that you will eventually tire of attacking the bride of Christ and take His priestly prayer to heart.
Of course I put in the effort. I'm not the one who commented "you aren't worth the effort" and then subsequently put in a lot of effort. I actually do think you guys are worth the effort. Why do you think I spend all this time and energy commenting?

Salvation is by faith alone. Those who truly believe in Jesus already have their name in the Book of Life. The view that having one's name in the Book of life is also contingent upon one's works is not the gospel. Jesus was clear when he said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."

By harmonizing this with all other Scripture, even words from Paul in other letters, it's cleaer that a true believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit and is guaranteed salvation.

Christ is coming back ONCE and that's when the Final Judgement will happen. Any other view is taking the "Thousand years" way too literally.

Everyone is getting judged. Hebrews 9:27
"And just as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after that the judgment..."

Interesting. If you believe him in John 6:29, do you believe him in John 6:53?
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you"

Do you believe anything in John 6?

Where does it say that "they were righteous by their own actions and deserved to be saved" in the Bible? You are reading your theology into the text again.

Anyone who adds works to grace is adding their own righteousness to God's plan of Salvation. God will not accept that.
I believe that, just as you stated; however, would you please give me a bit more explanation. I think some of us are not quite connecting on what is grace and salvation and how that is separate from works and how that does or does not fit in with Revelation and the Book of Life. Not being as learned in the Word as some of you, I wondering if some of us are interpreting some posts differently than what the individual intends to mean.
I was not asking you, which is why I purposely addressed the person by name. It's becoming increasingly obvious how your toxic attitude and your efforts to dominate it and those who attempt to contribute. Your authoritarianism is not exactly the best method to persuade others of your interpretation of the scriptures.

However, hoping that others are reading this, I am going to attempt to explain how I understand faith and works as I interpret the Scriptures. The response is more in line with yours as it relates to its wordiness; however, I have made an effort to avoid responding in the toxic manner.

I don't disagree with much of your post, however, I believe many of us have a d dangerous misconception which has crept into the hearts and minds of many Christians. It's sneaky & even appealing, because it seems to make life easier. It's the idea that faith alone means you don't need works. After all, we believe in salvation by grace through faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9).

o 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

These verses are often twisted, perhaps combined with a few other verses taken out of context ,and interpreted differently than what is meant, when studied in its context with other passages about this subject. In my opinion, it reduces Christianity to a passive belief system, where simply saying, "I believe in Jesus," is seen as the finish line.

It's not. Faith is the starting point, not the destination. I will give you my opinion about why this misconception is so dangerous, and what it means to live out your faith the way God intended. James 2:17 puts it plainly:
"Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
Dead faith does nothing. It doesn't feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or shine a light in the darkness. Imagine standing before Jesus and saying, "I believed in You," only to hear Him respond, "But what did you do with that belief?"

Perhaps where some of us get stuck is that we know salvation is a gift from Christ. We can't earn it. We can't work for it. It's freely given through His sacrifice. But along the way, some Christians confuse salvation with discipleship. Yes, salvation is freebut true faith changes you. It transforms your heart, your mind, and your actions. Faith is the root of our salvation, but works are the fruit. Christ did NOT say, "Believe in Me and carry on as usual." Christ said, "By their fruits you will know them" (Matthew 7:20). These works should flow naturally from a heart changed by faith. You don't force them; they're a joyful response to Jesus' love. Paul wrote in Galatians 5:6: That actions should be a reflection of "faith working through love. "Faith isn't passive. It's active.

Believing that faith alone is enough without works is like planting a seed and never watering it, then wondering why nothing grows. Even Worse, it gives Christianity a bad name. When the world sees Christians who claim to have faith but don't act on it, they see hypocrisy. They see people who talk about love but don't show it. Perhaps my favorite verse in the Bible is Matthew 5:16:
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

Your works aren't about earning salvation. They're about glorifying Jesus Christ and pointing others to Him.
The relationship between faith and works is that salvation comes by faith in Christ alone, and the good works performed by believers aren't the basis of salvation but should be understood as the necessary evidence of that salvation. Throughout the Bible, we see that salvation is received not on the basis of works but on the basis of faith in God alone. So, the entirety of the New Testament teaches that we are justified by faith alone, but the faith that justifies necessarily flowers into good works.

Jesus himself emphasizes this through many parables and sayings, and Paul argues explicitly against the inclusion of works in the basis of our salvation. James, though arguing that justification is by works "and not by faith alone," can be harmonized with the rest of the New Testament when it is realized that James still expects us to sinhe is combatting faith without works, not faith alone as the basis of salvation.

The Gospel of John emphasizes the importance of faith, using the verb "believe" 98 times to underscore the importance of faith. In John C-6, verse 28, the Jews ask what they have to do
to perform God's works (John 6:28). Jesus replies that they are to "believe in the one he has sent"

(John 6:29). 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." John emphasizes repeatedly that those who believe enjoy eternal life (John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24, etc.). One is not saved by working for God but by believing in God.

Paul teaches that justification and the gift of the Spirit are received by faith instead of by works of law (Rom. 3:20, 28; Gal. 2:16; 3:2, 5, 10). This is confirmed by other texts which teach that
justification is by faith instead of works. What saves is the object of our faith, which is Jesus Christ as the crucified and risen one (Rom. 3:2126; 2 Cor. 5:1821; Gal. 1:4; 2:21; 3:13).

This raises the question, however, of the role of works in salvation, for we see in a number of verses that works are necessary for eternal life. For instance, Jesus teaches that those who
refuse to forgive others will not be forgiven by God (Matt. 6:1415; 18:3135), those who practice lawlessness won't enter the kingdom (Matt. 7:2123), that only those who bear good fruit are truly saved (Mark 4:120), that only true disciples belong to him (Luke 9:5762; 14:2535), and that those who practice good will be raised to life (John 5:29).

We find the same emphasis in Acts. Those who want to escape God's wrath must repent of their sin (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30), and they must "do works worthy of repentance" (Acts 26:21). God is impartial and fair; those who do good will be rewarded with eternal life and those who practice evil will face final judgment (Rom. 2:611).

"Only those who sow to the Spirit will enjoy eternal life, while those who sow to the flesh will be destroyed (Gal. 6:8).

Paul reminds his readers that God avenges evil (1 Thess. 4:6), that those who do what is good will be rewarded (2 Cor. 5:10).

James, at first glance, seems to contradict Paul's theology of justification. Paul affirms that believers are justified by faith and not by works. James says that justification is by works "and not by faith alone" (James 2:24). James refers to the same verse about Abraham's faith (James 2:23; Gen. 15:6) that Paul cites (Rom. 4:3; Gal. 3:6), but he seems to apply the verse in a radically different way, arguing that the works which followed Abraham's faith justified him, while Paul contends that Abraham was justified by his faith, and not by his works.

Some scholars claim that Paul and James contradict one another, but most say that such a view ,contradicts the inspiration of Scripture, and there is a plausible solution to our dilemma. Both Jesus and Paul teach salvation by faith, and yet also emphasize the necessity of good works for salvation. The good works necessary for salvation can't be the basis of one's salvation since God is infinitely holy and demands perfection. Thus, the good works performed by believers aren't the basis of salvation but should be understood as the necessary evidence of salvation. Such works are the fruit and product of our new life in Jesus Christ.

We have an important confirmation that James himself believed this, for he says in James 3:2 that "we all stumble in many ways." To me, James means by this that we all sin in many ways, and he makes this comment immediately after insisting on justification by works (James 2:24). Apparently, the works that justify are quite imperfect, and thus they could never be the basis of our justification since God demands perfection. Since we continue to stumble in a myriad of ways, our works function as the evidence and indication that we have a new life. Justification is by faith alone, as we put our trust in Christ alone, and thus our salvation is by grace alone and for the glory of God alone, and our good works demonstrate that we are trusting in Christ for our salvation.

You have still failed to qualify what true faith is. How can you know if you were really saved? What happens if a person is "saved" and lives a moral life until the end, but they sin right before death, were they ever really saved? ---> I've qualified it over and over. You can know you are saved if you truly believe in Jesus and put your full trust in him for your salvation. If you are still thinking your salvation depends on how "good" you are, then you can't ever know you're saved because you'll never know in this life if you've ever been good enough. I don't understand why you'd ask me whether I believe someone who sins at the very end was ever saved or not - I've told you over and over that what determines one's salvation is their true faith in Jesus and not their sins, no matter when they commit them. That's actually a question for YOU, however. In your system, someone can have faith in Jesus and live a perfect life, but then commit a mortal sin right before they die and then they go to Hell. There's absolutely no peace in that. That is most certainly NOT "good news". It's terrible, anxiety-inducing news.

---> Yes, one can reject a gift by not accepting it. But for YOU to take it away after you've given it to him because of what he DID or didn't do means it was never a gift, but rather a privilege or benefit. Privileges and benefits can be taken back, but gifts can not - "for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable ." (Romans 11:29).

Careful, you are cherry picking parts of verses and trying to apply them to your theology. In Romans 11, Paul is discuss God's relationship with Israel. If I gave my son a car and he drove it. But later, he didn't like my rules when I enforced them and he gives it back. He rejected the gift. I don't think you'll find anyone who accepts your "gift vs. privilege/benefits" theory. Salvation isn't a privilege. ---> If your "rules" were tied to having the gift, then it wasn't a gift. Otherwise, he would have had no reason to give the car back to you because of your rules. That'd be like saying Jesus giving someone salvation, but has rules he wants them to live by, but those rules have no bearing on the gift. But that person doesn't like the rules, so he gives back salvation even though it wasn't even contingent on following his rules. That doesn't make sense. If he's giving it back, he didn't want it at all and it had nothing to do with the rules. Bad analogy.

Notice that Ephesians 1:13-14 says that you're saved upon belief - NOT by performing anything like baptism/sacraments/obedience! And notice that nowhere does Paul say that a "mortal sin" makes you lose your salvation. In Galatians 5, Paul is addressing believers.

You are hinging your belief on this false "true believer" notion. No one can ever know if they are a true believer.

I disagree. You can know if you truly believe the same way you can know you truly believe a chair will support you when you sit in it. If you sit in the chair and put your full weight on it without any way to brace yourself, you believed. However, if you hold on to something or use one leg to put your weight on as you're sitting in order to brace yourself if the chair were to break, then you didn't believe.

The same applies to believing and trusting in Jesus. Those who truly believe in him put all their dependence on him, knowing whether they stay up or fall will depend ALL on him. Those who aren't truly believing in him are trying to "brace" themselves from falling with their own works and merit, thinking they need to "help" Jesus hold you up, instead of relying fully on Jesus to do the work.

Christ is coming back ONCE and that's when the Final Judgement will happen. Any other view is taking the "Thousand years" way too literally. ---> It works either way: Jesus comes back, then the millenial kingdom starts, and at the end of the millenial kingdom, the Great White Throne judgement begins. Jesus only came back once there. The sheep and goats are the people coming out of the tribulation before the millenial kingdom starts (premillenial view) where all believers were taken up (notice they went UP - Jesus didn't come down)

Everyone is getting judged. Hebrews 9:27 ---> But not all judged to determine eternal life. Believers will be judged for rewards.

"And just as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after that the judgment..." ---> if this is saying judgement to determine salvation, then how do you square this with Jesus' own words, "they (believers) will not come into judgement, but have passed from death to life"? You are continually trying to make Scripture contradict itself to make your views work.

The biggest example of your view contradicting scripture is that if the sheep and goats parable is about salvation for EVERYONE, then it's saying that salvation is purely by works. But this contradicts the entire gospel message of the Bible.

Interesting. If you believe him in John 6:29, do you believe him in John 6:53?
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you"

Do you believe anything in John 6? ---> I believe everything in John 6... so how did the thief on the cross eat a piece of Jesus' flesh and drink his blood? When did the sinful woman of Luke 7 eat Jesus flesh and drink his blood? When did the house of Cornelius eat Jesus' flesh and drink his blood? Obviously, eating his flesh and drinking his blood means believing in him. If you don't think so, then YOU don't believe John 6 -

"For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and BELIEVES in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."

Not being as learned in the Word as some of you, I wondering if some of us are interpreting some posts differently than what the individual intends to mean.
I was not asking you, which is why I purposely addressed the person by name. It's becoming increasingly obvious how your toxic attitude and your efforts to dominate it and those who attempt to contribute. Your authoritarianism is not exactly the best method to persuade others of your interpretation of the scriptures.
WHERE in the world in my comment is there anything "toxic"? Isn't the comment you just wrote to me "toxic"??

I really doubt my tone matters. You have your views and you're pretty set on them, even if I were to show they are against what Scripture teaches.

Here is the synopsis of our interaction, as I remember it - you said something I viewed as unbiblical. I asked you about it - no bad tone whatsoever. You gave an answer, but it didn't address the issue. So I called it out and re-asked, again, with no bad tone. Then you said something like "okay, but you won't accept it, because you're a Pharisee" ---> THIS is where the discussion derailed and my "tone" changed with you. This is what everyone seems to do in this thread - especially OldBear. I ask a question, you guys avoid it, and when I hold you to task, I get called a "Pharisee" and "authoritarian" for doing so - just because I don't let people dance around the issue. I'm so sick of this game. I just want an honest discussion without all the evasion and ad hominem tactics.

So let me try again to re-focus the discussion: given what you've said previously and what you've said in your long post above, there are some issues. Let me just focus on one for right now in order to keep things simple and uncluttered, and so that points won't get forgotten or lost, and also to minimize the chance that you'll perceive my "Pharisaical tone" and risk derailing things again:

1. The Book of Life - you are saying this will be opened to judge our works, in order to determine our eternal fate. But where are you getting this? The Bible only talks about the Book of Life having names of people who are already saved to eternal life. It's not a book used to judge us. If your name is in there, you're saved. No one whose name is in there can be judged and lose their salvation or go to Hell.

Let's start there.

Okay, so do you see what I'm talking about? I tried to respectfully focus on one point but you didn't address it at all. Now, that's your prerogative, but that's what usually happens on this thread with many of you - I don't get an answer, then I call it out, then the person either dodges it again, or gives some ridiculous non-answer or an answer with terrible reasoning or bad facts, then I call THAT out, and then voila - I'm called a "Pharisee" or "authoritarian" because I'm insisting on actually staying on point and demanding intellectual honesty. And then I'm accused of having a "toxic tone" because I sort of lose respect for the person since they're playing games, which is not giving me any respect. This happens over and over, like clockwork. In this thread, and in others. And then when this pattern continues, the really nasty ones come out of the woodwork and start calling me the "Father of Lies" and say that I'm serving Satan.

So with that said, let me try again: where did you get that the "Book of Life" contained all our works, and that we will be judged for our salvation based on what's in that book?

I promise to answer your question if you answer mine. Let's have a respectful discussion.

You're demonstrating for all here your supreme ignorance. You can't even distinguish between a few posts every few months vs "anything I say". Moron. Liar.
Aren't you demonstrating your double supreme ignorance, and your lies, because you just commented that it's not true that it happens like clockwork, which you can't know unless you have been reading everything in this thread?

Who's the moron and liar now?
