It is a war. We will see at some point whose propaganda is closer to reality. Meantime, take all wth a grain of salt. Russia obviously has problems if it cannot take down Ukraine after 4 and a half years in which they have had large material and manpower advantages.

The problem is that Putin has been a true humanitarian in dealing with the Ukrainians. To this point, he has seen the Ukranians as fellow Slavs and this as a civil war with an eye on reconstruction when it is over.

This is illustrated by his POW policy. A Ukrainian POW who wishes to renounce the Zelensky government and the Ukranian nationality can move his wife and kids to Russia and be freed to live his life as a new Russian. Have you ever heard of a country having that generous a policy towards "enemy" POWs?

The recent terrorist strikes by Zelensky's government on Russian civilians is changing the way both Russians and the government view Ukraine. The conflict is transitioning to a phase where it is seen less as a civil war between Slavs and more as an actual war against a NATO aligned adversary. So the gloves are going to come off.

Ukrainian Capital Suffers 'Night Of Hell' In 11-Hour Russian Assault

"At least 20 people were killed and several dozen injured in the overnight multi-wave Russian missile and drone assault that overwhelmed Kiev's air defense umbrella. The sheer scale of the bombardment indicates a significant ramping up of Moscow's retaliation strategy...

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Ukraine's allies to strengthen the country's air defenses following what he described as a "night of horror" in Kyiv, urging partners not to delay decisions on supplying air defense systems and missiles. Writing on X, Sybiha said the death toll after the attack may rise as the rescue teams continued their work.

As for numbers of projectiles, Ukraine's air force tallied that Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones during the attack."

A couple of years ago, Ukraine would have been sticking to the propaganda line "nothing to see here, we shot them all down." This tells you how close they are to losing.

So you're saying Russia is just trying to be nice, and that is why they haven't been able to take down Ukraine?

They don't want to own Ukraine and all its problems. We'd rather shove it down their throats than end the war, though.

Not serious. Russia has always wanted Ukraine for its farmland and resources.

The warmongers always say stuff like that, but we'd best hope they don't believe it. Misjudging the motives of a nuclear power is a potentially fatal error.

Case in point, how Russia miscalculated Nato intentions in Ukraine, it's own ability to reshape the course of events, thus starting a war that will place Russia in its worst geostrategic position since 1809
If that's the goal, it only highlights the foolishness of our policy.

"While defending our vital interests, we must avert confrontations that force an adversary to choose between humiliating defeat and nuclear war." JFK

Sigh. Upon what will you blame your failures in life when all the boomers are gone?

Here's the reality. We put up with too much for too long. Reagan threw bricks at the Europeans (behind the scenes) but couldn't press the issue because of all the Soviet armored divisions in the Fulda Gap. Division = weakness.

Trump does not have that problem. (And neither did Bush 43 or Zero or Biden). So now Trump is laying down the law - it's not our job to defend Europe. Europe is perfectly capable of doing that on their own.

We need to spend our aid dollars on better and more capable allies. Like Israel. We've literally never had a better one.

This is quite possible the stupidest argument against cutting defense spending.

Up defense by all means. Then we can bomb more Countries. Funny how Govt spending as a part of the economy is bad, except to build bombs then we need more! Only 8% of GDP to defense companies is criminal, but we cant afford health care that too expensive. How do you guys keep a straight face.... Except CEO guys they are eating from the trough. Govt spending is bad unless it goes to them

Also, whiterock's implication is America should be spending more money on defense spending than we do on public education...

Whiterock, a dedicated government-american and former CIA employee, always trots out this chart.

Here's the reality:

"Defense Spending Overview

Following President Trump's proposed budget increase, defense spending is projected to consume 80% of the United States' discretionary budget."

"Definition of Discretionary Budget

Discretionary spending refers to the portion of the federal budget that Congress decides on each year through the appropriations process. This spending is optional and covers various areas, including defense, education, and transportation.

Key Features of the Discretionary Budget
  • Congress sets discretionary spending levels annually.
  • It is determined through a budget resolution that outlines spending limits and priorities
Discretionary spending includes funding for:
  • National defense
  • Education and training
  • Transportation
  • Health services
  • Public safety and justice
  • Environmental protection"
This is where fiscal responsibility starts apart from legislative movement on non-discretionary, or mandatory spending that various laws force.

No, numb nuts. It means the math clearly demonstrates it is not possible to balance the budget by cutting foreign aid. It would literally have 0-point-something impact on the federal deficit, a reasonable insurance policy to pay to keep us out of major wars which actually could bankrupt us in a very short timeframe.

LOL your post proves my point.

Our deficit is 5.8% of total spending. Discretionary spending is 30% of the federal budget. First rule of major budget cutting is not to fight math - that you have to start with the biggest pieces....that you cannot get substantial cuts from the smaller pieces. You can cut across the board. You can cut disproportionately. Or you can just eliminate one or more things entirely. To do the latter on military spending would require a 50% reduction, which would mean demobilizing 25-50% of our troops. Meanwhile, China is accelerating the pace of its military spending.

The isolationists are immune to reality when it comes to how to balance the budget.

The only politically possible path that will have any mathematical impact is what Trump is doing - nibble away entitlements by going after fraud & waste, cutting federal workforce to historic lows, eliminating some agencies, and growing revenues via aggressive economic growth. That will neither balance the budget quickly nor eliminate all federal debt. But it will bend the curve in the right direction. (which is the stated goal).

Or we could just slash away at the DOD and let the economic depression begin, followed by massive political upheaval, and hope our adversaries don't see our distress and make a move to exploit it.

Either way, cutting foreign aid will have a mathematically inconsequential effect on the deficit. Since you propose to cut defense spending by 50%, wouldn't it be wise to keep the aid money intact? I mean, if we're not going to be able to threaten to kick someone's arse for messing with us, wouldn't it be wise to keep some ransom money at hand? (remember history here...tribute to the Barbary Pirate regimes in North Africa approached 20% of the federal budget. It took a Navy and some Marines to stop that nonsense).

Defense spending is the new money pot for corruption. It's third rail dangerous to question because you will be accused of not supporting the military.

What is evident is the Trump children are winning defense contracts for startups that they control. These contractors have no operating history, no proven track record, no reason to get their bid past received in the mail. Once they've grabbed the initial contract, what controls exists to manage cost overruns due to their trial and error? I suspect none.

We can't get a new administration fast enough. (I doubt we can) but I hope we can all agree this is unacceptable.

And for all you ready to scream "Hunter Biden. " Hunter traded on his name. Not one dime of taxpayer money went to him and his actions did not put our National Security at risk.

You should be aware that the ad hominem attack means you have no substantive response.

Here's the salient fact you struggle to accept: as a simple matter of math, foreign aid and military spends are a rounding error compared to the federal deficit. Cutting it all off has no material impact on the deficit and guarantees that we will have to spend much more later on down the road in blood and treasure.

To remain at peace, you have to demonstrate BOTH the will and the ability to deliver frightful consequences to those who would challenge you. The Barbary Pirates didn't attack us because of neocons or boomers or any of your other conjured hobgoblins. They attacked us because they could - we did not have in-theater deterrence. Ergo they perceived us as weak and did not fear any consequence of acting against us. They only stopped when we showed up and bombed the bejesus out of them. If we'd been making port calls with a navy that outclassed theirs, none of the attacks would have happened.

You seem intent on re-learning the lessons of history.

We dont even own this country anymore you old fool and the 2027 NDAA is $1.5 TRILLION... with a T

With Section 219, you and your peers are about to hand over authority of our military and intelligence agencies to the Israelis.

Good luck convincing anyone about imaginary threats when anyone with half a brain with the remotest level of awareness can see Congress is destroying the country & bankrupting via inflation the 95% of Americans who dont work for the defense contractors or the Israeli embassy.

And I want to sock in the mouth the next person who brings up this asinine "rounding error" argument. When you are broke and $40 trillion in debt, you dont run around giving free handouts to your neighbors. You pay your *********bills!

We are on the same page. The ones that get me are the people touting how "American" and patriotic they are cheering as this guy is gutting America of treasure, prestige and credibility.

Think about it, they are tying it to patriotism, high testosterone, being a liberal or any one of other derogatory labels if you call them on it. Hegseth has been a nightmare.

All the boats we just randomly destroy have done nothing to stop drugs coming in the US. But, it feels manly... So it must be good.

The Trump boys are raking it in and Donald is teeing it up. Yet, these flag waving idiots are cheering???? Just do not get it unless they are getting a cut, nobody can be that stupid to cheer this stuff and get nothing out of it? I guess hero worship? Cult of Personality? They believe Elon really gives a **** about them and is doing this for America???? He was the power behind the Green New Deal they rail on Biden about, Elon was cheering and funding. He was big Biden when it helped Tesla...

They are cutting Medicare and would love to get rid of SS, how many on here are counting on that for their retirement? What percent on here can fund everything themselves after 70? 5%, maybe up to 20%? They are cheering for their own lowering of benefits after a lifetime of paying for others. Make sense? The UN has never made a finding of genocide in Ukraine. Compare those numbers with the numbers in Gaza, and you'll see why.

And maybe you didn't notice, but the left is just as Russophobic as anyone. Ukraine was Biden's war before it was Trump's.

Uh . . . Russia has veto power at the UN, so of course the UN will never declare Russia committed genocide.

Russia has killed 10 times as many Ukrainians as Israel has killed Palestinians.

Russia has taken a significant chunk of Ukraine and threatened to take more.

Putin has said Ukraine is not a real country, and Ukrainians are not a real people.

Yes, Putin has considered genocide compared to Israel, and it's not a close call. And unlike the Palestinians on October 7 and many times prior, Ukraine never attacked Russia.

must be because it isn't a stance for the lunatic left

Russia doesn't have "veto power" over the UN. The Unites States and Russia both have veto power over UNSC resolutions, but that didn't stop the UN commission from its finding of genocide in Gaza.

Israel has killed more civilians in absolute terms, and vastly more in relative terms, than Russia has. This is not close and not in dispute.

Why does it matter civilians or soldiers? Russia invaded Ukraine and wants to wipe Ukraine off the map. In doing so, it has killed hundreds of thousands, injured more, and routinely targeted civilians.

The UN itself did not find Israel committed genocide. A commission did. Really no different than UN reps condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and targeting civilians.

So Russia killed 2 million Ukranians?

It matters because you're accusing Russia of genocide. That implies targeting civilians, and no, Russia does not routinely do that.

The commission operated independently and supported its conclusions with voluminous evidence. Really quite different from some representative speaking off the cuff.

A material component of genocide is intent. Putin denies Ukraine's and Ukrainian's existence, has twice invaded, and has taken and will take more of Ukraine, all the while killing hundreds of thousands, including civilians. That is genocide in my book.

And, yes, there have been documented civilian massacres, and Russia is bombing Kyiv (and other cities) apartment buildings multiple times per week.

The commission was a joke, like most of the UN on these matters.

Even if all that were true, you're still several steps away from meeting the definition.
