Come on. You're too smart to believe he's actually winning this war with all of Lugansk and 85%-90% of Donetsk in Russian hands.

I know the IC is running a month long psy-op along those lines, but the truth is too easy to find at this point.

Nearly all the metrics suggest they have peaked and are on a slow downhill slide. They cannot afford a peace deal on status quo, trends are turning against them (Ukraine logging a couple of months with net positive gains in territory), and they cannot force a change in that dynamic. Forces beyond their control would have to intervene to save them from a 12-24 month devolution into political upheaval.

You have never accepted reality: Russia is in a proxy with an entity (Nato) which has 10x greater GDP. It's only path to victory is for a Ukrainian collapse leading to rapid Russia victory. That didn't happen. Among all scenarios at this time, such is now the least likely outcome. So Russia faces an economy which is past peak mobilization, with increasing labor shortages and declining energy prices squeezing their federal budgets, etc..... They've lost the technicological edge on the battlefield, and are basically putting up flesh against machines (drones), bending the casualty ratios even further in Ukrainian favor.

The only viable plan Russia has is to hold on long enough for some unforeseen miracle to materialize out of thin air. They cannot do that that for another 24 months.

No. They could use tactical nukes like you want America to use in Iran.

you are the only one talking about using tactical nukes.

Actually there's quite a bit of talk. One of Putin's advisors gave an interview about it a couple of weeks ago.

Neither has Trump.
It's primarily a fixation of isolationist nutjubs and their like-minded propagandists in Moscow.

The question is whether Russia will use them. Advocates for an attack on Europe have been getting more vocal, and by some accounts their opinions are gaining traction.

It is a war. We will see at some point whose propaganda is closer to reality. Meantime, take all wth a grain of salt. Russia obviously has problems if it cannot take down Ukraine after 4 and a half years in which they have had large material and manpower advantages.

The problem is that Putin has been a true humanitarian in dealing with the Ukrainians. To this point, he has seen the Ukranians as fellow Slavs and this as a civil war with an eye on reconstruction when it is over.

This is illustrated by his POW policy. A Ukrainian POW who wishes to renounce the Zelensky government and the Ukranian nationality can move his wife and kids to Russia and be freed to live his life as a new Russian. Have you ever heard of a country having that generous a policy towards "enemy" POWs?

The recent terrorist strikes by Zelensky's government on Russian civilians is changing the way both Russians and the government view Ukraine. The conflict is transitioning to a phase where it is seen less as a civil war between Slavs and more as an actual war against a NATO aligned adversary. So the gloves are going to come off.

Ukrainian Capital Suffers 'Night Of Hell' In 11-Hour Russian Assault

"At least 20 people were killed and several dozen injured in the overnight multi-wave Russian missile and drone assault that overwhelmed Kiev's air defense umbrella. The sheer scale of the bombardment indicates a significant ramping up of Moscow's retaliation strategy...

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Ukraine's allies to strengthen the country's air defenses following what he described as a "night of horror" in Kyiv, urging partners not to delay decisions on supplying air defense systems and missiles. Writing on X, Sybiha said the death toll after the attack may rise as the rescue teams continued their work.

As for numbers of projectiles, Ukraine's air force tallied that Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones during the attack."

A couple of years ago, Ukraine would have been sticking to the propaganda line "nothing to see here, we shot them all down." This tells you how close they are to losing.

Tell that to Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the states that made up Yugoslavia, and Rumania. No need to let Putin run amok on any territorial gains. Would be really bad policy.

Agreed they have no designs on Europe. The problem is that drawing the line in eastern Ukraine hasn't had the deterrent effect the Russians were hoping for. The Europeans are committed to escalating drone and missile attacks on Russian civilians indefinitely.

I get the nervousness, but realistically. I think this is all about Crimea and Kalingrad. They believe that Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are historically Russian. The Kalingrad enclave is what I think would be under threat.

Atlantic Council -

"Based on the boundaries of the Czarist Empire at its greatest extent on the eve of World War I, potential targets of future Russian aggression could include Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and the nations of Central Asia."

They do also reference the Satellite Nations of the Warsaw Pact as a possibility, but I can't see that happening there is too much in the paragraph above. Check out how Putin thinks...

Taxes are not a donation.

Apparently you are wealthy which just goes to show all Boomers needed to make it in life was a room temperature IQ and a pulse.

You were born at the perfect time in the perfect place and were primed for success more than any group in human history thanks to the countless sacrifices of people infinitely more impressive than yourself who came before you and built this country.

So show a little humility and respect.

Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with someone working at Subway and grinding their way through an honest day's work.

Your assertion that Russia wants only part of Ukraine (like Germany only wanted part of Czechoslovakia) is way more suspect. Do you really believe Putin would have negotiated away half of Ukraine had his tanks driven in to Kiev and destroyed the Ukrainian military in the beginning of the war? I don't think you really do.

A couple of years ago, Ukraine would have been sticking to the propaganda line "nothing to see here, we shot them all down." This tells you how close they are to losing.

So you're saying Russia is just trying to be nice, and that is why they haven't been able to take down Ukraine?

They don't want to own Ukraine and all its problems. We'd rather shove it down their throats than end the war, though.

Not serious. Russia has always wanted Ukraine for its farmland and resources.

The warmongers always say stuff like that, but we'd best hope they don't believe it. Misjudging the motives of a nuclear power is a potentially fatal error.

The army that Putin sent to Kiev wasn't even theoretically capable of destroying the Ukrainian military. The only thing it could have accomplished was to force the government into negotiations.

Russia had already given up Ukraine on the condition that it remain neutral. When that agreement was violated, they negotiated the Minsk Agreement. Only when that failed did they invade. Viewed objectively, the prima facie case is that Russia acted for the reasons it stated. It's not impossible that they had hidden motives, but the burden of proof for that assertion is on you.

This matters because Europe and America are acting on the wrong assumptions. If the Ukraine war is simply a land grab by Putin, it's possible we can make him back down by gradually escalating. If it's a response to what Russia sees as an existential threat, escalation will have the opposite effect. My concern is that we aren't prepared for that.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Ukraine's allies to strengthen the country's air defenses following what he described as a "night of horror" in Kyiv, urging partners not to delay decisions on supplying air defense systems and missiles. The basic answer is that when an agreement wasn't reached during the first six months or so of the war, Russia decided that controlling Zaporizhzhia and Kherson was strategically necessary in order to secure control of the Donbas and Crimea. Besides, even if they were content with control of the Russian area exclusively, there's no peace offer on the table that would recognize it.

We should cut both of them off and stop wasting money on wars of choice.

you ain't smart MAGA turd.

Why dont you donate your own money to Ukraine if you really care so much.

Nobody is stopping you.

A lot of Ukrainians are already much wealthier than you are, but I'm sure they'd still take your money!

I do . They are called taxes, something you prolly don't know much about since you get money back from Subway.

Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with someone working at Subway and grinding their way through an honest day's work.

yeah punk azz. Man, you are clueless. First, get a job. Glad to know I was born at the perfect time and place than any human group in history. dude, really. Perhaps Education, Hard ass Work, risk taking, sacrifice. Yeah, it was all there handed to me in my lap. fool. Do you know how dumb you sound with all your Boomer non-sense. My kids are prolly around your age and have never heard them ***** about Boomers. They just keep their heads down and work their ass off and don't use excesses as you. quit your complaint and get out there and do something, son.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. You asked why they wouldn't accept a peace deal giving them control of Russian areas. They tried for years to implement the Minsk Agreement, which was actually a more modest demand, but even that was too much from our point of view.
