House Republicans, meeting behind closed doors, voted Friday by secret ballot for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) to step aside as the GOP speaker nominee

Washington Post colleague Paul Kane reports that Jordan received just 86 votes in favor of him continuing his campaign.
MAGA got their shot.

Now, can we get a serious candidate?

Sure, which Dem is the current favorite ?
God, I hope not a Dem.

Right now it looks like the pool is

Hern OK or
Arrington TX

Know about Hern, nothing about Arrington. You guys probably know more than me on these guys. Hern is no Biden fan.

Sessions now in. At.leasg we are getting some real candidates.

Jordan was a ridiculous candidate, basically rewarding the Gang of 8. Wasn't going to happen. But, McCarthy is gone...

Jordan wasn't a part of the gang of 8. He's actually a pretty popular guy among Republicans.

Scalise was a serious candidate and lost.

We don't need another milquetoast speaker.

But no Doubt that is what the republicans will deliver

No doubt. It delivered McCarthy afterall.

How does GOP Speaker dictate agenda with a 4 seat majority. One that does not stick together. How do they get anything done without, compromising? If they compromise they are selling out, right?? Milquetoast? Or, just don't do anything, shut it down. Don't approve a budget, default on debt, don't approve any promotions, just shut it down for how long??? 14 months? It is a guarantee GOP will win, Red Wave? Like 2022... How long until 5 or 10 break ranks?

You sure reach some interesting conclusions. We are going on a couple of weeks without a house speaker and got rid of a guy who was pretty dreadful and you're acting like it's the end of the world. The govt is under threat to shut down for a few days and it becomes 14 months . You sure are a chicken little.

The sky isn't falling because a weakling and speaker who had numerous special interest groups supporting him has been voted out. That's called democracy. It's how things work. They'll find a replacement eventually and no doubt it will be another weakling that will compromise on trillion dollar spending packages while at the same time continuing to support a proxy war in Ukraine.

So GOP can dictate policy with just a 4 seat majority in the HOR, no control of the Senate or Executive Branch? It doesn't matter? Just fix itself? McCarthy did a decent job with the tools he had. Anyone that has dealt with local, stsye or federal govt would know that

Guys, the Govt can't just shut down. Don't you guys live in the real world? There are 2 wars going on and the US Congress can't do a thing.

We can't have the HOR just shut down. We have 20 or so days to get a budget passed or continuing resolution. This is not a game. Where did the adults in this Country go?

So GOP should just roll over and concede every spending package because it holds a narrow majority?

That's the kind of milquetoast thinking that loses republicans elections. We need someone with a backbone and not a wuss. The GOP should use the tools at its disposal to gain leverage.

Have a little backbone.

Geez, have you ever been in a budget meeting? It is not about backbone, it is about what you can and can't get done. GOP doesn't have the juice to do what you want.

Keep going with this path of Jordan like nominees, you will see the Dems win the gavel. They just need 5. We are about to see another first all because of unreasonable GOP who are more interested in making idealist stands than Governing. US needs Governing now not hold your breath tantrums.

People have no idea what Trump, Ryan and McConnell squandered when the GOP had all levers and did nothing. They could have passed it all. Now, MCarthy got what he could, he knows how to play the game. He's gone and there doesn't seem to be any adults left in the room.

This is such a bad take. There's absolutely nothing wrong with gridlock. In fact, gridlock often times prevents the other side from passing legislation that would be incredibly damaging for the country. The idea that the GOP should rubber stamp massive spending packages and proxy wars because it has a small majority is one of the most ridiculous takes I've seen on this board. Why have a majority at all if that's the case.

Such a dumb take.

Repubs will be happier in the minority. USA has tipped anyway. I don't think there is much they can do

Lol. Such a fatalist take.

I can't stand trump and think we lose the next election if he's the nom but that doesn't mean anll repubs are doomed. Candidates other than Trump beat Biden in polls. That fact alone tells you the situation isn't as dire as you make it.

Moderates don't win Republican elections. They just don't. Let's stop pretending the Repubs have to work with democrats to win elections. That's never been the case.

You have obviously never been responsible for anything but yourself.

You get done what you can. If you are not growing and moving, you are dying. For every day we sit in gridlock, others move forward. We become weaker. The cost becomes higher. The border stays open. The military gets weaker.

I find it incredible that you don't see any areas to move forward. Sitting in gridlock is better.

Got news for you, there is a lot more spending needed. Spending is not going down. Even on National Defense, Navy and AF have been budgeted for technology upgrades. Army and Marines, not. That will be billions. Infrastructure, just bridge repair is billions, total will be trillion. Water, Airlines, Ports, electric grid, should I go on. I am just hitting the defense and infrastructure.

Grow up, there is a ton of work to do and we have idiot children like you saying gridlock and nothing moving is good. You don't move, you die. Believe me, China is moving.

So spend money we don't have a kick the can down the road for our children and our children's children. Of course that's what you advocate. Why am I not surprised that you're advocate spending like a liberal?

So ridiculous and the antithesis of conservatism. Spending like drunken liberals is what got us into this situation numnut. Got news for you: advocating for more of the status quo isn't going to win us elections . And it's not conservative.

You're no conservative.

From WaPo

You are going to tell me about deficit spending?? Reagan, Trump! Maybe you should read a little Reagan before touting your Conservative chops. According to you and half these MAGA followers, Reagan is a RINO, right? There have only been two Presidents serious about balanced budget Clinton and Bush Jr. Clinton Balances it and W stuck to his budget in 2001, 04 and 05. That is it. Trump raised it as much as Biden. Reagan increased it the most to date in history.

As for spending, we don't have a choice. 85% of the US budget is committed it is either mandatory programs, defense or cost of money. So in real terms we are talking 15% spending that can be negotiated.. You don't want to raise taxes, so revenues are static. So with a 4 seat majority, no working majority within the GOP and just fired the Speaker you expect to set policy, direction and spending. You have no idea what you are talking about.

You friggin MAGA idiots alienated 70% of the Nation. GOP has no credibility, the last straw were those losers that stormed the Capital in Trump's name. You saw 22, we lost the Senate. Shut down the Govt in the name of Conservatism. It is going to be worse in 24, watch...

Show us how

Balance the budget without the votes in the House, a Democrat Senate, & Democrat president. I'll hang up & watch

A good start is not rubber-stamping every spending package the Dems propose.
All it takes is votes

It takes the republicans having the balls to be unified against it. If they are, the spending bills don't pass.

But as we know, we have too many milquetoast republicans that aren't willing to do so.
Given the state of the country now, do you really think you guys can get a majority of the House & Senate to start the process of balancing the budget? I don't. The country tipped about 15 years ago

Balancing the budget? Most likely not. Preventing democrats from pushing through massive and unnecessary spending packages? Absolutely.

Just need Republicans with the balls to speak up and vote against them.

I realize you're a stupid and easily triggered never trumper, but if you had the ability to disengage your feelings and improve your reading comprehension, you would see a lot of your post includes incorrect assumptions.

First, I'm not MAGA. As I've said repeatedly if you would actually read posts is that I will vote for him only if there is no other conservative alternative.

Second, I'm never said anything about setting policy and agenda. Instead, I said republicans should not be rubber stamping democrat spending packages. And that is essentially what they're done under Special Interest McCarthy. There is nothing wrong with gridlock. Gridlock can prevent really bad policies from being instituted by a party that has both the presidency and the senate. It's happened for generations.

I realize Trump was a big spender. It was one of my biggest critiques of him and the reason I dont want him anywhere near the White House ever again.

Gaetz, Jordan and the seven that voted are MAGA, through and through.

Gridlock for 14 months? The longest in US history is 35 days. I really don't think you know what you are talking about in what it takes to operate the US. Not calling you stupid, just don't know what you are talking about.

Have you read Goldwater or Reagan? Even Jordan was willing to give in on Federal SALT. The Backbone you talk about is not a realistic option for a Nation of 330 million and a 6 trillion dollar budget. What you are saying is not a realistic expectation. McConnell was able to hold on the SCOUS Justice because we had a working Court. Without a Speaker nothing moves... Call me whatever names you like, it doesn't change the practicality of your position.

I think we agree. The value of a Republican Speaker is not that he/she would balance the budget, but that he might be a restraining hand. I fear this debacle will hand the House to Democrats

And shutting down the government is coming up

Balancing the budget! Yeah. In the past 30 years we have only had one President that didn't EXCEED his submitted budget, "W". He did it 3 times.

We need a Speaker that won't create more Dem attacks. That is my big fear with Trump, it will be one attack after another on him to get him out. At least someone else that is not seen as a flamethrower we can focus on issues that need solving. Give me someone that will deal with the border, energy and not default on our debt! We can deal with the rest later.

I have a feeling you must personally benefit from the spending in question because no conservative would actually think as you do.

I am not sure *** you're talking about. Gridlock for 14 months? Who said that?

I think we agree. The value of a Republican Speaker is not that he/she would balance the budget, but that he might be a restraining hand. I fear this debacle will hand the House to Democrats

And shutting down the government is coming up
Balancing the budget!

I think it is too late. We've tipped and we won't get it back without a big reset. I don't know what that looks like, but it will be significant. We won't do it with cuts, we can't do it with increased taxes.

First, House Republicans chose an establishment guy to be their speaker. But the hard right got sick of him and dumped him after nine months. Then they turned to his No. 2, another mainstream conservative, who was promptly blocked. Then they tried an ultraconservative candidate, but mainstream members struck back, quickly killing his candidacy.

Back at square one after 20 days without a speaker, many House Republicans have found themselves asking: Are we simply too dysfunctional to govern?

If you want to be the Banana Republic you say we are becoming, disregard the processes that are in place and have been as a Nation. Start Cherry Picking what should be followed and what should not. If you start picking and choosing what process deserves to be followed and what doesn't by what people think, you are now a Banana Republic.

If he is innocent he will be found not guilty. If the charges are wrongfully brought forward, they will be dismissed.

As for the Political Spectrum, the Reagan Republicans are now moderates. We were "Conservative" in the 70's, 80's, 90's and even the 00's. This ultra left movement started with the Tea Party and Obama. It has gotten worse since. McConnell not allowing Obama to pick a Supreme Court Justice seems to have been the flash point of this crap where Governing doesn't matter it is all ideology. It was a small positive that resulted in a huge negative.

I have a feeling you must personally benefit from the spending in question because no conservative would actually think as you do.

I am not sure *** you're talking about. Gridlock for 14 months? Who said that?

You make a lot of assumptions. What is it you think I mean by gridlock?

Gridlock, shutting down the Govt rather than approve a budget, not approve the debt limit, basically keep things from getting passed until Biden is gone. Although the GOP doesn't have the juice to do that.

I was not suggesting a shutdown for 14 months - but using leverage to obtain concessions on spending and putting an end to the Democrat agenda in congress.

Emmer could navigate the current environment, but I don't think the Trump-ites will let him get the votes. He is too interested in actually Governing than making ideological speeches.

He definitely sounds like your kind of guy. You wont need any maga votes with this guy bc dems will vote for him since he will give them everything they want.

But what will he get in return? That is the key.
