From WaPo
House Republicans, meeting behind closed doors, voted Friday by secret ballot for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) to step aside as the GOP speaker nominee
Washington Post colleague Paul Kane reports that Jordan received just 86 votes in favor of him continuing his campaign.
Now, can we get a serious candidate?
Sure, which Dem is the current favorite ?
Right now it looks like the pool is
Hern OK or
Arrington TX
Know about Hern, nothing about Arrington. You guys probably know more than me on these guys. Hern is no Biden fan.
Sessions now in. At.leasg we are getting some real candidates.
Jordan was a ridiculous candidate, basically rewarding the Gang of 8. Wasn't going to happen. But, McCarthy is gone...
Jordan wasn't a part of the gang of 8. He's actually a pretty popular guy among Republicans.
Scalise was a serious candidate and lost.
We don't need another milquetoast speaker.
But no Doubt that is what the republicans will deliver
No doubt. It delivered McCarthy afterall.
How does GOP Speaker dictate agenda with a 4 seat majority. One that does not stick together. How do they get anything done without, compromising? If they compromise they are selling out, right?? Milquetoast? Or, just don't do anything, shut it down. Don't approve a budget, default on debt, don't approve any promotions, just shut it down for how long??? 14 months? It is a guarantee GOP will win, Red Wave? Like 2022... How long until 5 or 10 break ranks?
You sure reach some interesting conclusions. We are going on a couple of weeks without a house speaker and got rid of a guy who was pretty dreadful and you're acting like it's the end of the world. The govt is under threat to shut down for a few days and it becomes 14 months . You sure are a chicken little.
The sky isn't falling because a weakling and speaker who had numerous special interest groups supporting him has been voted out. That's called democracy. It's how things work. They'll find a replacement eventually and no doubt it will be another weakling that will compromise on trillion dollar spending packages while at the same time continuing to support a proxy war in Ukraine.
So GOP can dictate policy with just a 4 seat majority in the HOR, no control of the Senate or Executive Branch? It doesn't matter? Just fix itself? McCarthy did a decent job with the tools he had. Anyone that has dealt with local, stsye or federal govt would know that
Guys, the Govt can't just shut down. Don't you guys live in the real world? There are 2 wars going on and the US Congress can't do a thing.
We can't have the HOR just shut down. We have 20 or so days to get a budget passed or continuing resolution. This is not a game. Where did the adults in this Country go?
So GOP should just roll over and concede every spending package because it holds a narrow majority?
That's the kind of milquetoast thinking that loses republicans elections. We need someone with a backbone and not a wuss. The GOP should use the tools at its disposal to gain leverage.
Have a little backbone.
Geez, have you ever been in a budget meeting? It is not about backbone, it is about what you can and can't get done. GOP doesn't have the juice to do what you want.
Keep going with this path of Jordan like nominees, you will see the Dems win the gavel. They just need 5. We are about to see another first all because of unreasonable GOP who are more interested in making idealist stands than Governing. US needs Governing now not hold your breath tantrums.
People have no idea what Trump, Ryan and McConnell squandered when the GOP had all levers and did nothing. They could have passed it all. Now, MCarthy got what he could, he knows how to play the game. He's gone and there doesn't seem to be any adults left in the room.
This is such a bad take. There's absolutely nothing wrong with gridlock. In fact, gridlock often times prevents the other side from passing legislation that would be incredibly damaging for the country. The idea that the GOP should rubber stamp massive spending packages and proxy wars because it has a small majority is one of the most ridiculous takes I've seen on this board. Why have a majority at all if that's the case.
Such a dumb take.
