Actually, I have observed MSM using the tactics of Goebbels for 40+ years. I have done some historical research into Nazi propaganda, spending a few months in Berlin for that purpose.
What tactics? Stoking fear is not a Goebbels tactic, it's normal for politics everywhere for all of time. Having a monopoly on information is not a Goebbels tactic. In a free market, it means people voted for that with their wallets. And I would not say CNN/MSNBC enjoy a lack of competition. More watch Fox News than either.
I'm not trying to speak for Historian, but an obvious example is the MSM's constant use of the Goebbels "Big Lie" tactic - such as virtually in unison repeating over and over that Trump is Hitler and his supporters are Nazis. It's clearly a total lie if anyone is even somewhat historically informed, but enough of the "masses" have bought it (as Goebbels sadly predicted roughly 90 years ago) that relationships are now ending and family members are becoming estranged over it. It's despicable and shameful.
If you paid attention, you would see that the CNN employees are careful to not actually make many direct comparisons. What they do is have guests on their shows that make the comparison, or they report that others are making the comparison.
That is another issue with legacy media, but it is more related to the rise of technology and therefore mass information dumps. The voice of a crazy can be amplified to the extreme, whereas in days past it was just their families that had to put up with their slobbery ravings.
If you paid attention you would've seen that not only their "guests" but also their normal paid contributors frequently brought up the Hitler and Nazi stuff and there was never any pushback on it from their main commentators on networks like CNN, MSDNC, and the legacy outlets. Shoot, just consider for a moment the incredible lies Joe and Mika routinely told and tell on their morning show, along with the women on The View. The "Big Lie" tactic is and has been very alive in the MSM for quite some time and that's very Joseph Goebbels-ish.
If you consider that these are not actually journalists working for CNN, but instead media entertainers who are selling a narrative for money, you start to realize that they are simply framing the news in a certain way, which is what political commentators have always done in America.
There was never a golden age of unbiased reporting, but there was a long period of time when the consumers of news demanded facts and made their own judgements, as opposed to consumers of "news" swallowing a narrative whole, and thinking they got news.
It is not a good idea to start policing narratives, or comparisons to Hitler. One poster on this board said "throw anyone who compared Trump to Hitler in jail!" Bad, un-American. And the same idea as what you just posted.
But what you can do, is make an effort to have facts labeled as facts, opinions as opinion, so that someone interested in an unbiased worldview can at least be certain when they are hearings fact or opinion or narrative or interpretation.
The big networks could do so with a trivial effort, and though some attempt to game the system would be made, it would on the whole, be good for the country.
