Live Updates: President Pardons His Son, Hunter Biden

The 'full and unconditional pardon' comes weeks before President Biden leaves office and transfers power to President-elect Donald J. Trump, who spent years attacking Hunter Biden over his legal and personal issues.

President Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon of his son Hunter on Sunday night, using the power of his office to wave aside years of legal troubles, including a federal conviction for illegally buying a gun.

In a statement issued by the White House, Mr. Biden said he had decided to issue the executive grant of clemency for his son "for those offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 1, 2024."

WaPo:

President Joe Biden on Sunday pardoned his son Hunter, a controversial decision that reverses his long-standing pledge to not use his presidential powers to protect his only surviving son, who was found guilty of gun-related charges in Delaware and pleaded guilty to tax evasion in California.

Using his executive authority in the waning days of his presidency, Biden lifted the legal cloud that has hung over his son for several years. While the president had pledged several times not to pardon or commute Hunter Biden's sentences for federal crimes, many close to him had expected the pardon would come, given the president's loyalty to his family. The move also comes at a time when Biden will face few political ramifications, given that he is a lame duck and voters have already rendered their verdict on his administration by sending Donald Trump back to office.
In a lengthy statement on Sunday night, released just as he was preparing to depart for Africa, the president said that his son had been "being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted." He said that he did not interfere with the cases but that the cases were brought about because of political pressure on federal prosecutors.

No worries. He'll be back in court on new charges for something soon enough. He can't help himself

Much like 'suicides' in Federal lockup.....no one is even surprised what Biden has done.

And thats why they were voted out.

Surely Trump pardons that terrorist that was praying outside that baby murder factory his first day in office.

Of course, Biden said he wasn't going to pardon Hunter, but it's not the first nor the last time a Democrat has straight up lied to us.

I would have pardoned both Hunter anf Trump. That would have assisted his legacy

I am certain there are some innocent or non-dangerous people rotting in prison right now because their parents are not political elites.

I will always wonder though about Hunter being on the Ukranian oil board and the relationship with the Russian -Ukrainian war and kick backs received by the Biden family since 2014.

None of us are surprised, and none of us can do anything about it.

The corrupt family gets away with it again. But they will still stand before God one day. Won't get away with it forever.

Yeah if major declassification happens then absolutely

Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma Holdings, one of the largest private natural gas producers in Ukraine, from 2014 until his term expired in April 2019.

Biden didn't only pardon Hunter for the specific crimes he was convicted of (gun & taxes). He was given a blanket pardon for any and all offenses against the United States of America for a nearly 11 year period.

Biden giving a blanket pardon for Hunter from 2014-now for any & all crimes against the United States of America (not just the gun crime he was convicted of) indicates sketchy illegal corruption took place with regards to his son's work in Ukraine and his father who was vice president.

What a not shocking coincidence that this comes out the same day that Kash Patel is announced as FBI head.

Biden is a corrupt, old style, Irish politician. Easily recognizable to readers of American history.

As such Biden feels totally entitled to enrich himself and his family utilizing his public office. He has funneled millions of dollars into his wife's name, set up Hunter to receive outrageous bribes and 'salaries', and will now waddle off to mental oblivion; laying on a Delaware beach.

However this latest outrage cements Biden's legacy as the worst president in US history.

Even Democrats have come to loath the guy; albeit for a bigger 'sin'. As they now blame Biden for Harris's humiliating election loss to Donald Trump.

As a liberal-this makes me sick. DJT is awful for the rule of law, but this is just as bad as anything he has ever done.

The most revealing aspect of the pardon is how far back it goes.

Now events that have not even been adjudicated are pardoned.

Clearly the Biden crime family was concerned what might be coming to light.

I agree with the first part, not sure about the last. He hasn't pardoned himself or anyone else. Congress has full power to investigate him and has done so.

My biggest beef is that Hunter clearly was guilty of things unrelated to the investigation-the guns and the taxes. That is not "politically motivated," it is criminal. The sentencing was in the hands of federal judges who does not answer to anyone and if they act outside the law, there are appeals courts.

You cannot say you are defending our system against abuse from Trump and then do something like this.

It also cements his legacy as the most corrupt POTUS in U.S. history. Any other corrupt former U.S. Presidents including Warren G. Harding were pikers compared to Biden.

Believe the president is protecting himself as well as his son.

This pardon is breathtaking in its scope and will inhibit any investigations down the road.

Especially in regards to Biden family influence peddling.

Quote:

The president has discussed pardoning his son with some of his closest aides at least since Hunter Biden's conviction in June, said two people with direct knowledge of the discussions about the matter. They said it was decided at the time that he would publicly say he would not pardon his son even though doing so remained on the table.
