What is the best alternative to St Jude?
The article you posted never accuses them of failing to honor what they say they will do.
It seems to me you want them to burn their reserves to pay for travel expenses, lodging of all family members and lost incomes. You're willing to risk their future good works over asking them to do more now.
What is the the economy going to be like for the next 5-10 years? What will be the level of donations for the next 5-10 years?

Our family have unfortunately had a number of serious health issues, and I truly feel awful for anyone going through them and can't ingrained having to worry about finances while going through it.
That said, the feature story in this article is a woman complaining that St. Jude didn't compensate her when she had to quit her job? They covered all of her daughter's medical expenses. They covered the mom's food, lodging, and transportation. This is one of the more bizarre complaints I've ever heard of.

The hospital said it needs a large reserve because its unique operating model relies on donations to fund annual operating costs. "[W]e are highly donor-dependent and subject to the economic driven vagaries of charitable giving," the hospital said in a written response to ProPublica questions.
But the hospital's reserve is already more than large enough to buffer against recessions and potential drops in donations, said Ge Bai, a professor of accounting and health policy at Johns Hopkins University. "They should be spending the money as aggressively as they raise it, but they seem to be hoarding," Bai said.
In July, in advance of an August trip to Memphis, Rainey called the patient services department at St. Jude to see whether they could help pay for a hotel to break up the travel day an expense Rainey said she could not afford.
To qualify for a hotel reimbursement, Rainey said, St. Jude told her she had to live more than 500 miles from Memphis. The ride from her home to the hospital is 530 miles (a measurement ProPublica confirmed with mapping tools). However, Rainey said, St. Jude told her it measured the trip from city limit to city limit and came up with a distance of 491 miles. Even using that metric, the distance is still more than 500 miles, ProPublica found.
When she challenged the hospital's stance, Rainey said she was berated by a patient services representative.
"I was feeling pissed off, and I was crying," Rainey said of the interaction. "You give up your whole life for your child, and they tell you don't worry about anything, we will cover this and then they tell you to just push through the drive."

I believe scrutiny is appropriate, but maybe they are "hoarding" to build a new hospital somewhere. Everything posted was only one side of the story.

Be specific. What do they do that is underhanded? I read the article you linked
St. Jude is a behemoth, because people really care about kids being saved from cancer. If you were to wage a successful campaign against it, and remove their funding, the world would be worse off, not better.
This is one of those situations where the truly ignorant are given a loudspeaker by social media. A 20 minute conversation with the right St. Jude worker would clear this up, but will you even try? No, just tell kids on the hiking trail to avoid St. Jude if they get cancer.

Plenty of research institutions are focused on finding cures for cancer. St. Judes just grifts way more than most.
