While that is probably a few bridges too far, I do suspect we have replaced so-called "white washing" history with "brown washing" history. There is definitely a lot of folks - not sure if they were indoctrinated during secondary school or college - that have a really mistaken understanding of history.boognish_bear said:
State superintendent for public schools in Oklahoma says classroom teachers are to blame for domestic terrorism.
I've never seen any evidence in my own kids' schools that they're being taught to hate America. They have Patriot Day programs, Veterans Day programs, and say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. Both of my kids have completed their K-12 education and their patriotism has not been diminished. This is an uncomfortable truth, we cannot allow our schools to be terrorist training camps. pic.twitter.com/BmRXZKlRDE

I am guessing these basic, undisputable facts are not taught in public school history:
- There are no such thing as Native Americans ... every human came to America from somewhere else
- Native Americans regularly practiced what we would call "genocide" against each other and most were very violent
- Native Americans practiced slavery, and the British stopped the practice not Native Americans
- Africans were sold into slavery by other Africans, who had enslaved them previously
- Muslims enslaved millions of Europeans, Africans, and Asians and continue to do so
While I of course have not sat in 100 history classes since I graduated, it does seem like many kids have a real misunderstanding of history and generally framed as evil white man oppressed peaceful, innocent brown people.
Truth should be paramount, but societies are better served by erring on the side of patriotism vs. "our nation is evil."
