Personally, I think every federal bureaucracy needs to be audited. Then audit every employee starting with each member of Congress, past and present. Same for all the upper echelons of every agency. I expect massive amounts of fraud would be uncovered and many of them would earn long prison terms.
We need a group made up of young folk that have nothing else to do but look for fraud in government agencies. These people need big balls. Why won't someone come up with a group like that?
I believe there was a group like this proposed and even shortly convened without necessary power or approval to exist for more than a statutorily limited time and no clear guidelines as to what was to be examined or cut. If I recall they made a lot of headlines for a while with outrageous claims of abuse and fraud, many of which fell apart upon further scrutiny.
They made a few changes but overall did not save the federal government any material amounts and it is unclear whether their recommendations or actions carry any actual weight or legality.
Almost like there needs to be an actual act of congress to corral the budget. Somehow we keep coming back to congress needs to do their jobs and people who want changes need to stop sending the same 95% back every 2 years.
Actually they did come up with lots of great ideas that resulted in meaningful cuts (good riddance to USAID!!!) but mostly they made recommendations to Congress and Congress did what they always do: lots of talk, little action.
