Correct
And Trump realizes this.
Possibly the biggest single reason he wants to end the war in Ukraine and improve relations with Russia.
You'll have to excuse him. He believes China's authoritarian way of handling COVID was the model response, and should have been employed here. He has a soft spot for China.Redbrickbear said:Tempus Edax Rerum said:

Is this like when everyone claimed he was starting a war with Iran during his first term? That turned out to be a horrible, horrible war….. oh wait there was no war and all those people were idiots for claiming that.

That's all plausible, but they'd better pick that enemy carefully. I'd expect them to be more of a regional bully (like Russia) and just rattle swords towards us occasionally knowing that doing anymore than that would get them cooked.mtenery14 said:

China's economy is going through some deep **** right now. And it will only get worse as their demographic picture continues to get more bleak. Their birth rates have been too low for decades, and that's also not counting the One Child Policy -- and it's estimated that they over-counted their population by over 100 million people as it is. Their population could very well be cut in half within the next 30-40 years.
You tie that in with their very tightly controlled capital markets, extremely over-levered housing market that makes our 2006-08 subprime market look like child's play, and a manipulated currency that is barely useable in global trade (because they print 4-5x more than we did when the Fed intervened at the onset of the financial crisis)....well, they're in a worse spot than they'll ever admit.
And what do authoritarian regimes do in times like that? Start a war and develop a common enemy.
Yes, China to me at this point is more of a regional bully. They technically have a larger navy than we do, but most of those ships aren't capable of sailing more than 1000 miles or so from base. They have two aircraft carriers -- one that was originally a hull from the Soviet era (that is steam propelled no-less!!) and another that's....a copy of that one lolol. They're working on two more with one undergoing sea trials, but they currently have none that even come close to rivaling the, ahem, ELEVEN that the US has. They're about 50 years behind us in that department and that's assuming we stop developing completely. China doesn't have 50 years.Robert Wilson said:That's all plausible, but they'd better pick that enemy carefully. Should buying Anerican be a choice? My dad always teased me for buying mazdas and a spitfire. I told him freedom was an amazing thing. He later bought a mazda pickup . After that he drive several Toyotas. He never went back.

Probably the biggest self destructive government policy one can think of
It is also the biggest reason that China will be unable to dominate the 21st century
They are losing 2 million citizens a year (basically a city the size of Austin disappears every 12 months)....and India has over taken them as the most populous country on earth.
And the decline is just getting started.....by mid century they could be losing such large numbers it will be shocking
[China's population will decline more quickly later this century, falling by more than 200-300 million people by 2060, according to one UN projection ...]

Unbelievable how completely wrong and short sighted the entire global intelligentsia was about population growth. Not to mention the fact that if China did decide to really get serious about stuff, we have the capability to completely starve them out. When I was at Baylor 100 years ago, I was in the early years of the BIC program. Had a big team-taught class where a bunch of Baylor profs were talking about population growth doomsday predictions. Typical Malthusian hogwash. I wrote a paper to be presented to the whole group tracking population growth curves in developed vs developing vs undeveloped countries and basically mapped out "population growth won't be a problem long term; if anything, those curves will continue to turn and much of the world will have the opposite problem one day." They all chuckled, told me it was an interesting idea with some decent research, but of course I was wrong. They patted me on the head and gave me an A for effort, despite my paper being completely incorrect and out of the mainstream...
This too. They import so much of their food and energy -- if they started the war now, they would completely deindustrialize and a country-wide famine would ensue within months.trey3216 said:Not to mention the fact that if China did decide to really get serious about stuff, we have the capability to completely starve them out.
