Whether he was attempting to be intentionally racist or not, you just can't post this **** in an election year. So tone deaf.

https://deadline.com/2026/02/trump-racist-truth-social-post-obama-reaction-1236711128/

UPDATED: While Democrats have condemned Donald Trump's Truth Social post of a video featuring a racist AI depiction of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, one of the president's strident defenders also called it out.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who is chairing the GOP's Senate campaign efforts this year, wrote on X, "Praying it was fake because it's the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House. The President should remove it."

The White House has acknowledged that Trump posted the video, and defended the president for doing so. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, "This is from an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from The Lion King. Please stop the fake outrage and report on something today that actually matters to the American public."

Her comments were a contrast to an incident in Trump's first term, when Roseanne Barr, then starring in her own ABC sitcom, referred to Valerie Jarrett, who was a senior adviser to the Obamas, as the offspring to the "planet of the apes." The Walt Disney Co. fired Barr. At the time, then-White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called out what she saw as a media double standard, but told reporters that "no one is defending" the sitcom star's comments.

Another Republican, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who faces a competitive reelection race this cycle, wrote, "The President's post is wrong and incredibly offensive whether intentional or a mistake and should be deleted immediately with an apology offered."

A spokesperson for the Obamas did not immediately return a request for comment.

The NAACP said in a statement, "Trump posting this video especially during Black History Month is a stark reminder of how Trump and his followers truly view people. And we'll remember that in November.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement, "President Obama and Michelle Obama are brilliant, compassionate and patriotic Americans. They represent the best of this country. Donald Trump is a vile, unhinged and malignant bottom feeder. Why are GOP leaders like John Thune continuing to stand by this sick individual? Every single Republican must immediately denounce Donald Trump's disgusting bigotry."

MSNBC and CNN covered the post during morning programming on Friday, while Fox News largely ignored it.

The clip of the Obamas features an "@XERIAS_X" watermark, and it appears that the account originally posted the video in October last year. The 55-second video portrays Trump as a lion, while Hillary Clinton and Zohran Mamdani are depicted as a warthog and hyena respectively.

Trump is an idiot.

No excuse for being that stupid.

Somehow I hope Rudio or DeSantis will be able to replace Trump in 2028.
Would be refreshing to have a normal individual in the White House for a change.

But with stunts like this.....it is getting to be less likely every week.

Nobody said it was what the "mid-terms will turn on."

I said it was an incredibly dumb thing to post during an election year. And that, it unequivocally was, which the admin apparently recognized since it pulled the video and blamed a staffer.

You don't have to run cover for Trump all the time.

From what I'm gathering, Trump did not post that particular video, he posted a different video about voting machine fraud, which ended and then briefly caught the very beginning of the next video in the feed, which is the video in question being reported as racist. If true, then the reporting on this is deceptive, as it does not provide this important context. The racist trope was not the video that Trump intended to post.

I'm not sure if this would make any difference to Trump's enemies, though. Still, it does show a tremendous lack of awareness/oversight on his part. Probably wasn't even him who posted it, but one of his staffers. The video has been taken down, but Trump still should apologize and explain the mistake.

Problem is that the GOP is not running against Biden's record this time...

He is right in 2024, no way Dems won with that dismal record. This will bite when facing competent opponents.

I agree at best this appears to be a careless mistake - but the reaction is also another example of the never ending double standard. The same people constantly calling Trump, ICE, and MAGA believers "nazis", "fascists", "the gestapo", etc. in an attempt to foment hate, violence, mayhem, and even assassination are the same people having a cow over this silly video. And unlike the outrageously offensive things Trump and his supporters are called every day, this video - while I get it can be construed as racially offensive - isn't any kind of an incitement to violence, mayhem, destruction, or murder of the Obamas or anything similar.

True......but like it or not....Trump is the President of the United States.

And he needs to either develope a thicker skin....or hand the position to Vance.

It isn't as destructive as far as calls to violence or mayhem, or any actual physical injury to property or person.

It breaches the one subject that white folks aren't allowed to breach.

Either Trump or Trumps folks are idiots on that subject.

That's not what Karoline Leavitt said.

I'm not Karoline Leavitt. It was my own independent assessment and I came to my own opinion. You guys should try it sometime.

I'll bet the press secretary, who had so much on her plate, didn't even watch the video and was just fed the talking points. Still, it is sad that some random internet dude like myself could have spun this a whole lot better than the President's spin doctor. I believe Trump when he says he only watched the beginning and liked it, so he gave the approval to a staffer to post it without being aware of what happened at the end. That's what I suspected, and that's what they should have said. But Trump being Trump, he's too proud to admit he made a mistake and offer an apology. That in of itself is another big mistake.

It'd be sooo easy to have this thing blow over as being an honest mistake if Trump would just communicate a modicum of contriteness and accountability, but he's too stubborn. And that's a shame. He's giving the media more ammo to overshadow any of the good that he does, when he could just defuse it from the beginning.
