Deutsche Bank Warns Energy Shock "Existential Threat" To Airlines, May Force Some To Ground Fleets

"CENTCOM stating overnight that the operation is only accelerating and only suggests disruptions will extend into next week.

The big risk flagged by Deutsche Bank analysts, led by Michael Linenberg, is that surging jet fuel prices could hit some of the weakest airlines.

With Brent crude futures up roughly 52% year to date and jet fuel up 100% to 125%, Linenberg warned clients in a note on Friday that "financially weakest carriers could halt operations."

"Year-to-date oil prices are up ~50% while jet fuel prices are up 100% - 125%. Absent near-term relief, airlines around the world could be forced to ground 1,000s of aircraft while some of the industry's financially weakest carriers could halt operations," the analyst said.

Frontier, Jetblue, and American are in the most vulnerable position.

As predicted, oil will open over $100 tomorrow. It actually hit $110 premarket. It could be an escalator to $150 this week as production shuts down.

FLBear: " Globalism used to mean free and open trading lanes that we all cooperated to keep operating. The US military was positioned to maintain these arrangements. Now it is a dirty word."

So think that through. The meaning changed over time. Do you recognize when, by whom, and why?

I said - Obama bastradized it. Clinton started it with NAFTA.

In my studies of the Middle East, the first major shift from Globalism as an ideal to something else actually started in 1972, when Great Britain handed over protection of the Gulf to the United States.

It started with the Marshall Plan.

We are going back real far! I was talking more modern times. Pre WW2 was a different world.

I can see 72, after the Suez crisis. Officially for the Gulf wasn't it 1980 when Carter said any attack in the Gulf would be an attack on the US?

We loaned them the money to rebuild. Then we created an international finance regime that allowed those countries to get rid of surplus dollars. By the 1970's, Japan burst thru with auto imports that were gutting Detroit. So Reagan threatened quotas and forced Japanese companies to build cars here. As nd it developed from there.

We haven't run a trade surplus since 1974. That doesn't mean globalism started there. That means it took a few decades for our trade partners to get fully rebuilt

Globalism ran on the foundations laid in post-WWII reconstruction. Had classes on it in grad school….

Yes, I know. I figured going back 30+ years wss enough. But, please keep going

The inflationary sins that were hidden by low energy prices is what's really the problem for this admin. Labor market is a problem, and the Cass Freight Index has been portending what's been happening in the underlying economy for some time. February's CFI report may be a double digit YoY decline.

Regardless of one's opinion on the Iran attacks, it's bad timing for Americans and this admin, and possibly the GOP in 7 months. Since regional energy infrastructure is being destroyed, it will take some time for supplies to recover even if the conflict is resolved expediently.

One side issue is now that prices are so much higher, Russia is able to sell at a much higher price even after deep discounts. With the recent loosening of restrictions on them, they're likely to fortify their efforts against Ukraine, increase their market share, and end up handing China a strategic advantage in the interim.

Our capabilities were overwhelming compared to the Taliban.

We still lost, surrendered, and left.

As far as I can tell, Hegseth was as big a mistake as Blondi.

Military career - commissioned as a 2nd Lt, promoted to 1st Lt, then Captain, then Major, then resigned his commission.

Oh, and political activism: "In May 2007, Hegseth appeared at a presidential campaign fundraiser for John McCain. In the months leading up to the 2008 United States presidential election, Vets for Freedom began supporting McCain. As the group's chairman, he criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama for supporting "a dangerous policy of irreversible withdrawal."

LOL. You two.....

China has just lost 30% of its oil supply (from Venezuela and Iran) and it has no significant pipelines to Russia, which is losing its shadow fleet to Ukrainian strikes and US Navy interdiction.

The biggest loser of all in what Trump has done the last 60 days is China. He's engineered a catastrophic reordering of their strategic position - to their detriment. Should they decide to invade Taiwan, they now have existential vulnerability to sanctions with few options to overcome them.

I saw in on Khoa San Road last night. He had on his usual ill fitting suit with a red tie. "red tie" makes sense being down there.
