You will not only eat your DEI sandwich, but you will like it too!

It is unfortunate a black woman is chose for the role. I was really looking forward to this movie.

It is unfortunate that Christopher Nolan, the cast, crew and money people won't reap the benefit of your $3 matinee ticket purchase. The studio is likely to go bankrupt, but that's what they get.

It is also unfortunate that other theater patrons won't get to experience you testing new ringtones for your phone during the flick; kicking the seats in front of you; and whining until mommy ponies up the cash for some Milk Duds.

America is so screwed.

And it's all the Negroes' fault.

I'm not as familiar with Greek (?) history as I should. Don't know much about Helen of Troy. I do know they have a trans man (woman to man) playing Achilles. Essentially a woman is playing a great Greek warrior. SMH.

I think the original poster's point has to do with the woke Disney culture. There is validity to it.

Snow White and lots of other classics were remade with all manner of wokeness. Completely unnecessary.

We've had a pretty good bull market for the past 5 years (except 2022). Disney's stock is down almost 50%. Why offend the sensibilities of half your audience? I understand a few attempts. When they repeatedly blow up in your face (profits), you'd think Disney would stop being so blatant about it.

You obviously haven't been to the theater in a really long time so they aren't getting your money either.

I thought Elliot Paige playing Achilles was a joke meme. My god....

Part of Disney's motivation may be due to Hollywood's wokeness. The Oscars mandated DEI to be eligible for awards.

It's interesting how this only goes in one direction.

Will Hollywood allow a white, Hispanic or Asian actor to play MLK or Obama or Jesse Jackson or LeBron?

I know this is sarcasm as it should be, that said for historical significance I don't want to see Malcolm X played by
Jim from the office, though I'm sure he would do a fine job.

The silliness of Helen of Troy being played by an actress to satisfy political correctness is just that, silliness and reduces its Greek mythological significance with its inaccuracy.

Rumor has it there are a ton of Anglo-Saxon performers in the movie as well.

Weird, weird stuff.

Lol. You sound just like a movie executive who sees this post and thinks this is a one off, random person making this statement and not realizing that it is the sentiment of a large portion of society.

A Greek woman had been recasted as a black woman.

A woman is playing the role of a man.

And people will skip the movie.

The movie will bomb and the executives will cry "what went wrong? Why didn't people watch our movie?"

And they will not truly understand the reason why.

But did any of them get cast in roles of an African person? Egyptian? Etc?

Are any female roles being played by men?

If lily-white Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland can play olive-skinned Mediterranean characters, why can't a half-African do the same? Is she more black than they are white? By what standard if so?

For me personally, I only care about an actor's ethnicity matching the source material if it's a documentary or historical piece.

The Odyssey is an exploration of what it means to be human. I couldn't care less about an actor's race in a supernatural fantasy movie.

You could do a review of it when you see it. Not sure many will.

Bingo, and well said.

If this is supposed to be actual history, how in the world can a blind author be accurate about things like color? Did she, like, stink to high heaven?

So yes, this is 100% just DEI BS

I'm just waiting for the uproar when these folks figure out it's a pagan revenge fantasy and not an adaptation of the beloved Christian radio series.

Tell me you've never been to Greece.

While Southern Greece has people that look as you described, Northern Greece looks more Anglo-Saxon in appearance than Mediterranean. Walk around Thessaloniki and the people there don't look all that different than Londoners.

Here's a depiction of the ancient Greek people:

Not all that different from Matt Damon and Tom Holland with beards.

I honestly don't care about the color of the skin of the characters, though I think the idea that this is the most beautiful woman that ever lived is a real stretch:

Was Halle Berry unavailable?

Exactly.

If Helen of Troy was historically a black woman played by a white woman, the animals of BLM would be looting and rioting

And it wouldn't be called DEI, but racist

Well it's not

Wokeness is an ideology and not a race

And it's hypocritical.

Because we know the woke would freak out if historical persons/characters who were black were changed arbitrarily to white (and it would be stupid to swap people like that in a role and change things in that way)

So why did he not cast actually Greek actors instead of Black people and English?

A lot less complaints from people if he actually went for real authentic Greek actors who are descended from the original Bronze Age Greek people

According to lwnjs,

That is racist. Not DEI
