Well actually the Trojan war was a real event…

Now the mythos around that war and the people who fought it is obviously story telling.

But what is the point again of casting non-Greek looking actors in a Greek story?

At best its a strange choice that hurts the story telling itself…"world creation" and all that jazz…since the whole point is to get the audience to buy in and lose themselves in the epic & story.

Not constantly having to question the casting decisions

I don't understand the uproar before the movie is released. Hollywood has been casting characters (especially fictional ones) across multiple races for years. (Red from Shawshank comes to mind).

Taylor in Cleopatra is another one. This is druggie Elon Musk driven.

Jesus also comes to mind. He's mostly likely not white and no way has has six pack abs.

You sort of keep ignoring what folks have posting and just keep doing the cut and paste job ... but I will entertain your silliness with a serious response:
- I think you need to understand the difference between casting fictional characters and non-fictional characters
- Before five years ago, Hollywood attempted to make actors resemble what their historical counterparts would have looked like - Taylor looked more like Cleopatra than Will Smith's bald wife; that's why it is called acting and there is costuming; but no one is going to believe Helen of Troy was blek or this chick has a "face that launched a thousand ships"
- The Jesus example is an immature distraction; cultures across the world depict Jesus in a way that resonates with the local people so as to provide comfort and peace; no one thinks Jesus literally was an American, but it is ironic the amount of butthurt LWNJ Christians spend on "white Jesus"

I could ask you another simple question you likely would avoid: would you be upset personally and do you think there would be outrage if Sydney Sweeney was cast as Rosa Parks in a biopic? Do you think you and Hamas Harry would defend the casting or condemn it?

At the end of the day, the eye-rolling is just the stupid Didn't Earn It virtue signaling in a world were black people make up 12% of the population but we have to pretend bleks were in Victorian England, bleks were in the War of the Roses, bleks were Norse fighters ... no one is making a movie about Africans selling Africans into slavery starring Ryan Gosling as a slave sold to the British by Will Smith.

There were blacks Vikings as the Vikings were travelers and enlsavers. They gathered people and things along their path.

Very unlikely there were any Black Africans as Vikings

They tended to raid the British isles and mainland Europe for their vast majority of their slaves. And rarely (though did on occasion) raid the Mediterranean basin area.

Now it's not impossible that in a raid on a Spanish, Arab, or Berber area they could not have captured a black African person(s)…but then that would have been a person they took as a slave (like the Irish or Britons) and not have been considered a warrior by them and unlikely to have been made a freeman or raised to warrior status.

It's I guess technically possible but no historical evidence for it and highly unlikely

[Modern DNA research confirms that the vast majority of people during the Viking Age had deep roots in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Slaves and Captives: The Vikings were notorious for capturing slaves (called thralls) and trading extensively as far as the Middle East and Northern Africa. Historical records and archaeological excavations of Viking sites indicate the presence of enslaved people of various ancestriesincluding some of African origin. These individuals were typically captives rather than active Viking warriors or explorers.]

Not all things are for all people. This might not be for you. It's doing nothing for me. I'll watch Shawshank again. I'll get mad at Red for you.

As usual you avoid the direct questions for the straw man, but not surprising. You're having a circle jerk with the same idiot that claims there was a genocide in Gaza but cannot explain why the population has increased since 10/7.

Would you support Sydney Sweeney playing Rosa Parks? Do you think there would be any outrage? Do you think there would be outrage if Ryan Gossling played an African slave sold to a British captain played by Will Smith?

I love the logic that since there are Albino black people then all Nigerians should be portrayed as white. LOL.

If Sydney Sweeney playing Rosa Parks drew people into the theatre, it would happen.

The fact that she was not cast as Helen of Troy is a good example of your statement being wrong

I don't know why she wasn't cast as Helen. I know Nolan directed "The Dark Knight." He knows what he's doing.

It would be interesting…got a link?

You would have to assume at least Black Africans could have been picked up in the Med. Basin by Vikings.

But would have been surprising to see them raise one to warrior status/free man status. They didn't even raise up the Irish, Britons, and Slavs they took as slaves all that often and preferring to keep them as a separate class within Norse society (at least for a few generations)

That's one of the anti-intellectual affects of Didn't Earn It on the Academy. People will just make random claims like "Beethoven was black" and one is not allowed to question the dubious scholarship or premise for fear of being charged with T'RACISM! Many full professorships at so-called "elite" universities are held by Didn't Earn It's that can barely read and certainly not think or perform rigorous academic inquiry. This is why we elect bartenders to Congress that think the American Revolution was fought to overturn billionaires. Disinformation + basic ignorance + suicidal empathy will be our downfall.

Christopher Nolan's 'Odyssey' debut breaks major box office record
Brendan Morrow
USA TODAY

Nolan's "The Odyssey," a nearly three-hour epic based on the classic poem by Homer, is officially a hit at the box office: It opened to a massive $124.5 million in North American theaters, according to studio estimates released by Rentrak on July 19.

This sets a new record for Nolan as the director's biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office for any of his films that aren't sequels, meaning the largest outside of his "Dark Knight" trilogy. That record was previously held by "Oppenheimer," which launched with $82.5 million domestically in 2023.

"The Odyssey" also debuted with $264.1 million globally, the biggest worldwide opening weekend of Nolan's career.

"The Odyssey," in fact, had a larger opening weekend than the latest entries in the "Star Wars," "Minions" and DC Universe franchises. Its debut ranks as the second biggest of the summer movie season, behind only "Toy Story 5," and the third biggest of the entire year, behind "Toy Story" and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." For live-action films, "The Odyssey" had the biggest domestic debut of 2026.

I saw it yesterday. Good movie. Cinematic (start backing up the awards trucks).

I'm no Greek myth person so I was watched it like it was Gladiator. It was stunning on screen.

I've now seen two movies this year. The Oddyssey and Michael. Both were fantastic.

Spiderman is next. Maybe theatre worthy movies are coming back.

It's interesting how this only goes in one direction.

Will Hollywood allow a white, Hispanic or Asian actor to play MLK or Obama or Jesse Jackson or LeBron?

Of course not, and if any producer tried to pull that off, it would be the end of their career especially if they are themselves white. It's for the same reason there is no "DEI" for white athletes in the NBA or the NFL. For the lefty DEI proponents it never goes both ways.

Any more the way things are, I wouldn't be so sure about the Reagan or JFK examples you're using. At any rate, you're missing the point that this kind of thing always only goes in one direction. Nobody would even think of sprinkling in white actors and actresses in a movie about slavery so "DEI" could be evenly applied, and it would of course be stupid to do so but not any dumber than DEI forced usage of racially out of place actors and actresses (because of either historical or traditional facts) in other movies.

And I'm happy the NBA in the NFL operate as meritocracies per the composition of their teams. That's exactly the way everything else should be as well, especially given that the whole premise for DEI (i.e., that America is inherently systemically racist against people of color) is false.

I can't hear you because I'm seeing, in real time, incompetence in this White House.

We can have a real conversation about qualifications and meritocracy IF it will be taken seriously. Areas what we are seeing is a belief that the black face is somehow unqualified for the job.

Hegseth is in a job he is woefully unqualified for, Cain (fantastic general) but didn't meet the set qualifications.(I don't mind the exception made for him).

RFK, Jr, Markwayne Mullins, Kushner and on and on proves that this isn't an argument about qualifications. Meritocracy is only on the table when black faces excel.

Elon Musk getting you riled up about not real people in a Hollywood production that doesn't change what we're seeing.

And you're right, Jackie Robinson would not be played by a white guy. Nor will General Patton be played by a black guy.

I might suggest we just enjoy the movie or don't. Not all things are for us all.

For you mouth-breathers, this is why folks are eye-rolling about the Didn't Earn It casting:
https://variety.com/2026/film/features/moana-creatives-polynesian-culture-traditions-1236807177/

Aspects such as traditional Mori tribal tattoos, known as T moko, the rich expression of history through dance, and generations of Polynesian traditions are the beating heart of Thomas Kail's adaptation. That left the film's cast and creatives feeling a sense of pride at seeing their culture represented on screen.

People would care less about tokens being cast as historical figures if five minutes ago "representation matters." The fact that there was not a single Greek cast in the movie should be called T'RACIST based on Hollywood's own apparent standards. In reality, it is just another example of lack of principles, hypocrisy, and double standards.

You also voted for Joe Biden. They did not select a real person as president.

It is unfortunate that Christopher Nolan, the cast, crew and money people won't reap the benefit of your $3 matinee ticket purchase. The studio is likely to go bankrupt, but that's what they get.

It is also unfortunate that other theater patrons won't get to experience you testing new ringtones for your phone during the flick; kicking the seats in front of you; and whining until mommy ponies up the cash for some Milk Duds.

America is so screwed.

And it's all the Negroes' fault.

Lol. You sound just like a movie executive who sees this post and thinks this is a one off, random person making this statement and not realizing that it is the sentiment of a large portion of society.

A Greek woman had been recasted as a black woman.

A woman is playing the role of a man.

And people will skip the movie.

The movie will bomb and the executives will cry "what went wrong? Why didn't people watch our movie?"

And they will not truly understand the reason why.

This didn't age well.

The interesting component is that Nolan will quite possibly destroy his own production company and also deal Comcast (Universal is distributor) a significant blow.

Wondering how much (if any) Nolan hedged his bet through outside investment in the project. If not, huge exposure. Even Coppola's production company couldn't survive one bad film despite all of the prior success.

This didn't age well either.

It was a good movie. It didn't bother me, or alter the story at all, that she was black. Helen of Troy wasn't a real person to start with, and while it is most likely she would have been white-ish were she real, it didn't matter to me that she was black in the movie. It's really a faulty analogy to compare a fictional character being misethnicized to a real person (Rosa Parks) being misethnicized. In Parks' case, color really was a critical factor.

I don't find the actress who played her to be beautiful, but that didn't matter either. The story wasn't about Helen of Troy. It was about Odysseus. Her role in the movie was minor (seven minutes and 50 seconds of screen time) and neither her color nor her lack of beauty hurt the film.

Solid movie. I won't go see it again, but I will stream it when it leaves theaters and movies to the smaller screen in my living room.

Interesting look at it.

Plausible, on the outside possibly. Likely, no.

Well, it is more realistic and plausible than Sydney Sweeny playing Helen or Matt Damon as Odysseus?

Troy the movie was enjoyable with Eric Bana playing Hector or Brad Pitt as Achilles? No one seemed to care, I thought the movie was enjoyable. Don't really go to the movies to see, real life. 9 times out of 10, real life would be very boring to watch.

Don't go if it offends that much. Just never seen Greek Mythology be such a point of truism, a hill to die on...

Was Brad Pitt as Achilles or Diane Kruger as Helen more real? No one seemed to care.

Isn't there supposed to be more skill as an actor than skin color?

Helen was the daughter of Zeus, for crap's sake. She existed only in mythology. There was no historical Helen. You have to be actively looking to be offended in order to be offended by Nolan's casting choice here.

But that's where some are. I don't get it, but whatever.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson graduated Magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College and cum laude from Harvard Law School where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. She had 20 years experience as a lawyer and 10 years experience as a Federal judge when she was nominated for the Supreme Court.

You call her a "DEI hire."

Mark Wayne Mullin has a high school diploma and a 2 year community college degree in construction management, NO military or law enforcement service, and was a cow-calf rancher. When he was nominated as the secretary of Homeland Security.

You call this "meritocracy."

Funny, if you give people credit for what they actually do on here, you are a Lib, Dem, or whatever the name du jour is at the time.

If you provide information, it is ignored and you are attacked. Attack back and it is a you issue.

Can I ask a question? Do you guys realize this ain't a real *****?

I personally know John Randle and Alfred Anderson. There were black Vikings.

I sat by Alfred when I took my SAT, he certainly could have been a Viking. I remember being sick as a dog when I took the ACT and made a mediocre score. I was 97%ile on the SAT so that saved me.

Sonny - I can explain it to you but I cannot understand it for you,

One can only listen to Jumanji speak to realize she's a buffoon. Same with Sotomayor.

Of course she's a Didn't Earn It. She would never have gotten into Harvard or hired as a lawyer at a decent firm is she had not been a black woman. That's the whole point ... that's why the average test scores for bleks at harvard are lower than white kids at Baylor. The whole point of Didn't Earn It is to promote bleks based on race because they cannot compete on average with whites, Asians, and Indians.

Tell me you do not know this or are you playing stupid like you do on The View?

Who wants to try to explain to Capt. Quick Stop, Sonny Hostin, Hamas Harry, and Yelling at Clouds that once again conservatives did not make the rules but are playing by the rules the regressives set - are you guys really this stupid?

I am old enough to remember this controversy. Not one buys your bull**** gaslighting.

That's why I'm probably more offended than most at the "controversy" surrounding some of the cast members of Crazy Rich Asians and why, conversely, their inclusion is so legitimizing to me. Henry Golding, the male lead, and supporting actress Sonoya Mizuno are both half-Asianand thus, according to some critics, not Asian enough to star in the movie. Actress Jamie Chung referred to Golding's casting as "bull****" in an interview. (She later apologized.) One op-ed about Golding had the candid title, "We'd Love to See a Full Asian Lead for Once."

You mouth-breathing morons are exhausting.

(the only reason Nolan cast the token blek chick and the mentally ill chick is to be eligible for the Oscars)

I'm not as familiar with Greek (?) history as I should. Don't know much about Helen of Troy. I do know they have a trans man (woman to man) playing Achilles. Essentially a woman is playing a great Greek warrior. SMH.

I think the original poster's point has to do with the woke Disney culture. There is validity to it.

Snow White and lots of other classics were remade with all manner of wokeness. Completely unnecessary.

We've had a pretty good bull market for the past 5 years (except 2022). Disney's stock is down almost 50%. Why offend the sensibilities of half your audience? I understand a few attempts. When they repeatedly blow up in your face (profits), you'd think Disney would stop being so blatant about it.

Sinon. Page is playing Sinon, not Achilles. Unclutch your pearls
