A motion for new trial is the standard motion filed after losing any trial. It delays the necessity of filing an appeal and gives the trial court the opportunity to consider any "errors" in its own record prior to going up on appeal.

All deaths of this type require full autopsies. Hopefully the post mortem reports can make a good determination.
It will be difficult for some loosely involved people to accept any report that does not fit their expectation. Let's hope they remain an ignored minority whoever they are.

The independent autopsy simply confirmed what the original autopsy found: it is too early to tell what happened. It's going to take a few weeks before we know more and can start to make conclusions about what actually happened. Did it happen before he went in the water? Is it normal damage you would see on a body that has been in a body of water for a long period of time? I'm no medical doctor, but there is no other damage to his body, so it's tough for me to say it was foul play, but it also cannot be ruled out yet. Problem is that the other kids might have been stoned at the time and have no idea what they were doing. Eyewitnesses will likely not have any credibility by the end of any trial - defense and prosecution sides.

Ok, fair enough. I just find it hard to believe that a group of bros would go do some foul play on their black friend just bc. Even if they were doing coke and partying they wouldnt want to kill him. Occams razor says black guy who cant swim well got f'd up and drowned. Maybe something else happened but I go out on boats alot to drink in similar scenarios and i can see how a drunk person can end up in a riptide esp if theyre not a strong swimmer. The ocean is not a place to mess around and people who dont know the water dont understand inlets and moving water. We had a couple of Mexicans here in Isle of Palms last summer go swimming in an inlet and they drowned real quick. It was sad but there were a ton of no swimming signs even with pictures so non english speakers could get the gist.

It is really hard to believe that a group of friends went out with the intention to kill one of their friends. In fact, I don't even believe that is what happened.
But it isn't hard to believe the party got out of control and one thing led to another, and even though it was an accident, he did not go in the water voluntarily. That's way down on my list of probabilities, but it could have happened. I think that is all the family is asking for and they don't happen to trust the government right now, so they want, as the NAACP said several times in the news conference, transparency. I think that is a fair request. I think things will be transparent when the findings are able to be determined in a few weeks. These things take time and we all want the answer now.
It isn't hard to believe he went in the ocean voluntarily, got caught in a rip tide and just wasn't a strong enough swimmer to get out. Drunk or sober, I don't think I would have the ability to get out of a riptide and I am an average to slightly above average swimmer who once upon a time in the Caribbean, as a grown ass man-not a teenager, almost went in the ocean, voluntarily, very, very drunk.
I'm just saying based on the available information, there are more questions than answers about what happened that day. There's no harm in letting the parents grieve. There's no harm in letting them demand better from the people who are investigating.
