I think Baylor created a completely unnecessary PR problem for itself. We are a Christian university with roughly 20,000 students, and by the best estimates Muslims represent maybe 1% of the student body, perhaps 200 students.

I have no issue with Muslim students attending Baylor or practicing their faith. But when you choose to attend an explicitly Christian university, I don't think the university has an obligation to modify its dining program around every religious practice. There are halal options available off campus in Waco, just as students with other preferences sometimes have to go off campus for what they want.

The bigger issue is the complete lack of upside for Baylor. Even if offering halal food seems like a small accommodation, Baylor had to know that promoting it around "diversity" would create controversy among alumni, donors, parents, and prospective students who value Baylor specifically because of its Christian identity. We created a national PR headache ourselves to solve a problem affecting a very small percentage of students.

Baylor should be welcoming to everyone. But being welcoming doesn't require constantly changing the institution to accommodate every group that comes through the doors. Students also choose Baylor knowing what Baylor is. We are a Christian university, and we should be confident enough in that identity that the expectation isn't always for Baylor to assimilate to everyone else.

This wasn't some crisis that needed solving. It was an unnecessary decision with very little benefit and a completely predictable reputational downside.

How? It's been in place a year. You just learned about it.
And now it's out and the damage is done. It took a year? Neat. Result is the same. Baylor is under no compunction to cater to ANY other religion. Why? Because those are false religions.

What damage? There's a place on campus that serves halal foods.

I bet I drive by 50 places a week that can offer me up different ways to make chicken every week. It's like the Bubba Gump of chicken in Dallas. Halal chicken, Currie chicken Korean fried chicken, Kentucky fried chicken (they let chickens die for that crap). Chicken wings. Chicken nuggets. President too chicken to serve. Always chickens out. Chicken fried chicken.

It's no "damage" to me. I'm just glad people are catching on to the greatness of chicken.

Might I interest you in those tiny watermelons? Especially from a Farmers Market. You'll be black by Wednesday.
The damage is actual Christians thinking of attending Baylor will look elsewhere when looking for a Christian institution. Catering to false religions ONLY devalues the credibility of the world's largest Baptist university. I had jerked oxtail for dinner last night. I probably eat blacker than you, Patna! Lol

I appreciate your perspective, and on some level I agree with you. But two things:

First, what do you think the PR headache would be like if word got out that Baylor refused a small accommodation for its Muslim (or any other group of) students?

The second thought is more concerning to me. We are a Christian university, as several have stated, shouldn't we treat people as we want to be treated?

The point of a Muslim attending a Christian University is not to educate him. It is to convert him.

Therefore the correct policy of a school like Baylor is to make that student as comfortable at Baylor as possible, and as uncomfortable with Islam as possible.

Otherwise there is really no good reason to have Muslim students at a Christian university.

Because if a Muslim student at Baylor graduates and remains Muslim all you have done is create a greater threat to your nation and your faith.

It's a religious ceremony. Stop pretending it's just how they cut their meat.

Is there something about being nice to people that hurts right wing Christians? The only PR hit Baylor will take on this would come from the realization that we have a bunch of hateful people as alums.

Frank: " You would have said the same about the Irish, Germans, Asians, African Americans who can vote, etc. small mind you have there."

No evidence for that claim. The Irish, Germans, African-Americans, etc., obeyed the rules and were not trying to replace the nation they came to with their own rules.

I've come around to your thinking. Not only should we never have a minority coach, we should field an all white team.

The right kind of whites!

The team should only come from Christian schools.

Am I a bad person because I go to a Halal chicken place down the street and it's almost the best chicken I have ever had.

Their hot bone in fried chicken full leg is the best fried chicken besides my mom's I've ever had.

Gotta admit, if it's as good the one I go to, I'd be heading there once a week.

Halal isn't a religious ceremony, per se. Many cultures view Halal as a more humane way to slaughter an animal as they believe it is more hygienic too. While I have no problem with Halal as a practice and it is NOT a Muslim only customs. Kosher meat is Halal. Not thinking we need Halal at BU. I someone cant eat what is available, they are in the wrong place.

Halal is not a type of cuisine or a new way of making chicken dishes.

You know that right?

It's just a Islamic slaughter technique

[Permitted meat requires a live, healthy animal slaughtered via a swift cut to the throat by a Muslim invoking the name of Allah, followed by complete blood drainage.]

This is not accurate

Kosher is not halal…and halal is strictly an Islamic ritual practice on slaughtering meat (and keeping it from ritually "impure" items like alcohol or pork products)

[kosher meat is not automatically considered halal, although opinions among Islamic scholars vary. The core difference is that halal slaughter (Zabihah) requires invoking the name of Allah during the process, whereas kosher slaughter (shechita) follows Jewish law and does not invoke Allah's name.]

For the 100th time

Halal is not a type of cooking or cuisine

It's a type of ritual slaughter and a type of purity test

[Halal is an Arabic word that translates to permissible or lawful. In Islam, it refers to any action, behavior, object, or food that is allowed according to Islamic law (Sharia). Its opposite is Haram, which means forbidden.

Chicken, beef, goat, lamb, and most seafood are permissible.

Forbidden items (Haram): Pork, alcohol, blood, carnivorous animals, birds of prey, and meat from animals that died of natural causes are strictly forbidden.

Permissible land animals must be slaughtered according to specific religious requirements: The animal must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter, The blood must be drained from the carcass, The name of God (Allah) must be pronounced during the proces]
