That was CNN reporter Jim Acosta's response to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders's accusation that he had placed "his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job."

The original video of Acosta's (non-) altercation with a press aide shows the aide grabbing the microphone in Acosta's hand and Acosta's wrist landing on her arm as he gesticulates downward. The version of the video Sanders shared late last night, courtesy of Infowars, makes Acosta's movement appear accelerated so that he seems the aggressor, and the movement itself seems aggressive. There is a tortuous debate over to what extent the clip was deliberately distorted, but the effect is clear enough. Acosta looks like Sanders wants him to.

So Acosta is right: This is a lie. But no one agrees on what the truth is anymore, and that's exactly what Sanders was counting on.

Sanders's decision to reframe pure anti-press sentiment as a blow struck from the moral high ground against a physical abuser is ludicrously hypocritical and remarkably canny. A favorite narrative of conservatives over the past nine months has been that the mainstream media is conspiring to destroy the lives of men, and Republican men in particular, with false allegations of sexual assault. There was Roy Moore, there was Brett M. Kavanaugh, and of course there is President Trump himself.

The concerns that conservatives broadcast about unsubstantiated allegations of assault are based on the premise that these accusations are cast wildly without any regard for the capital-T Truth. But they're not.

There is no leap of journalistic faith required to believe stories in publications from the New Yorker to the New York Times to The Post. These stories are carefully vetted: The accused have a chance to respond. The potentially exculpatory is included right alongside the incriminating. The press certainly reported unproven allegations against Kavanaugh, but reporters were consistently up front about what we knew and what we didn't.

Sanders is cleverly compelling progressives to prop up a Republican talking point: False allegations exist, and people will pay attention to them. When Acosta's defenders cry out against Sanders, she can cry right back that the liberals are the ones who always insist on believing women and that the press does not care about abuse when it is one of its own who is accused. Reporters are forced to defend both their reporting on abuse allegations and their colleague who Sanders alleges is himself an abuser.

It's also clever because Sanders knows the Trumpian base to whom she is pandering will believe her. As much as the right wing is primed to doubt conspicuously careful reporting from legacy outlets, they are ready to accept without question unvetted tales from the administration and "alternative" sources such as Infowars. And those alternative sources are ready, with the help of automated accounts, to spread those stories far and wide. So to many Americans, the altered altercation footage featuring Jim Acosta, notorious abuser of women, is the real thing.

This is the surest way to wage a war against the press. Americans live in split realities, and Sanders knows it. She is inverting a narrative that has already inflamed conservatives against the press to inflame them further, playing on anger about assault allegations to amplify distrust and division. It's working. After all, no matter which side you're on, you're probably pretty mad right now.

When you report too soon without confirming, you get stuff wrong.

The eye witness may have mistaken someone else for the shooter; it does appear there was some confusion. But the police ultimate figured out the shooter was a former marine--a white guy.

The initial story I read said police were still trying to ID the shooter.

This is basically Jim Acosta every single press conference.
Just substitute "Mr. President" for "Mom".

Acosta was nothing more that a deflection for the Trumps. Trumps was having a presser after he just lost the House to Democrats who are going to make his life miserable, because now, he has someone to answer to. Trumps has lost 300 Republican seats in 2 yrs. He has gutted the Republican Party, the Party of Reagan. It's the party of the Trumps and his sycophants. He has left many of us to be Independent and vote Democrat on occasion to blunt him and his unfettered insanity. That presser yesterday was an absolute embarrassment to our country. Now you are telling me a local news anchor who says they actually spoke to a person who was at the door who saw the gunman isn't a reliable source? That is the very definition of a reliable source.

Major media sites report facts on much less information than that on a daily basis then push a narrative the next 24 hours regardless of what the facts are. National journalists pass around news from all over the country based on local news gathering, that's basically what journalism. In this case there was no reason to doubt a local reporter who said they talked to someone on the scene who actually saw the shooter.

That's exactly what I saw. He was like a trumpeting elephant on a rampage. He has such a high opinion of himself that he thinks when he delivers his nasty indictments to people he considers "horrible," he's ruined their lives and careers. Considering the source, they should be flattered. Since the only reason Trump likes people is if they are loyal to him to the point of lying, purgery and criminal activity. I live in the greatest state in the union. People are moving to my state in droves from all over the country and in fact, people are willing to risk life and limb to try to enter the country illegally and my state. Fast motion, slow motion, stop action, no action, same thing. I watched the CNN version, still shows the incident clearly, there was no reason to alter the tape when what he did is what he did, and is clear on all recordings.

Shoot if you slow it down to quarter speed, you could say they were trying to hold hands and staring into each others eyes.

Now, looking at the 2 and a half minute unedited tape, my biggest question is why in the world would a sitting President let that loser waste so much of his press time, and why in the world do other members of the press allow that loser to cut into their time so much as if they don't matter. Dude needs to be put on a short lease.

I agree that Acosta should have stopped trying to ask a question when it was obvious that Trump was not going to answer him.

But the intern shouldn't have tried to grab the mike from him--that was out of bounds. SHE reached into his personal space before he even realized what was happening, because he was so focused on Trump.

Perhaps Acosta's point was that Trump doesn't want to answer hard questions and that he won't take responsibility for the impact of his rhetoric against the press and political foes for "riling up the crazies" and inciting violence. That's an entirely valid point, because that's exactly what is happening and Trump knows it. But we all know that already. Acosta should have handed off the mike and let his colleagues take over.

Sanders has made the situation a lot worse because she is only doing half her job. A good press secretary stands between the press and the president, insisting that the press treat the president fairly (which Fox did NOT do during Obama's presidency) and making sure the president is available to the press when he should be. Sanders basically functions as an attack dog for Trump. Rather than trying to make peace with reporters who ask hard questions and represent publications that try to provide objective coverage or provide coverage from a liberal perspective, she has declared war on those people and demanded that the press treat Trump with kid gloves, a favor neither he nor she returns.

Trump HATES any criticism, and he thrives on adulation. He would only visit states and districts where he knew he had strong support. A real leader works hard to lead everyone, including people who don't like his policy agenda. Trump writes those people off and then heaps nasty invective on them, with predictable results. The country is more polarized than ever, and riled up crazies are shooting people, sending bombs and yelling at people for shopping while speaking Spanish or mowing the lawn while black or standing in a parking lot waiting for AAA while black on a weekly basis.

People are moving to my state in droves from all over the country and in fact, people are willing to risk life and limb to try to enter the country illegally and my state. Oklahoma has been run by into the ground by their politics, which haven't been blue since 1964. You would fit really well in some parts. The only thing you would miss would be your kids winning in sporting events since the private school kids have to play the public school kids in Oklahoma. They don't hide them from competition against these public school kids.

Not just Hope. Acosta is a handsome guy and successful. It's easy to understand why a classy Republican woman might be interested. These people are doing their jobs.
Trump hates the guy because he was scooping out information while he was banging White House staff. CNN had a year of inside information about the clown operation. You can dismiss me and the information. It's out there and known by survival of the fittest Republican types.
