This is a plant based burger but apparently there are plans to make even meatless fried chicken too.

I've had others that were not bad. There are some really good meatless plant based restaurants popping up. Really good ones.

It's more than just plants (to me). The taste must matter. I've not tried the Burger King burger. Beyond Meat stock was outperforming Uber last I looked.

This is not the first time a fast food restaurant paid more attention to fads than facts.

Anyone remember the McLean?

I certainly recall its end, and expect the same for the Impossible Burger and that fake chicken nugget venture KFC is rolling out.

Looks like the free market supplying something that an entrepreneur thinks people want. I wouldn't want one but I know people who would, so good for them that they can get something they want.

I don't think non meat eating is a fad.

It's not gonna work in fast food.

You want vegan, eat vegan.

You want vegetarian, fine.

But a burger is a burger, and I can already hear Wendy's getting ready to laugh at KFC's chicken-nuggets-but-no-chicken-what-the-hell-are-they ...

Went to a fast casual restaurant with my daughter a few years ago in LA. Didn't realize until I was halfway through eating my burger that it was meatless. I thought it was delicious and kept thinking it was a great idea.

As the above poster stated, if there is a demand for it, kudos to the entrepreneur who takes a risk to supply it. I would eat the stuff if it tastes good.

I see some problems with the concept.

Price: The Impossible Whopper costs $5.49, versus $4.19 for a regular Whopper

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2019/08/01/burger-king-impossible-whopper-vegan-burger-going-nationwide/1821429001/

https://www.fastfoodmenuprices.com/burger-king-prices/

That 31% premium for something that's not even supposed to taste different from a regular Whopper is not likely to be a favorite for burger regulars.

Also, Vegans and Vegetarians are already saying they are not interested in the Impossible Whoper, because it is cooked on the same grill as the meat entrees, and using the same grease (with animal fat).

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/08/vegetarians-torn-over-trying-burger-kings-impossible-whopper.html

So what's the hook, aside from being a new addition?

It's not competitively priced, it's not a true vegetarian entree, and if you want real vegetarian cuisine there are a number of attractive alternatives close by in most cities.

I read it as a fad, doomed to the same fate as last year's ihob fiasco.

Reminiscent of the Snackwells/fat free cookie fad several years ago. Everything was fine until they realized the stuff they put in them to replicate the taste and texture in lieu of the fat was 10x worse than the fat.

I read that some Vegans see this as an occasional quick and easy meal to keep them Vegan when they don't have time to do their usual cooking. Other than that, I would imagine there is a small amount of novelty to it and then there is the virtue signaling crowd. I don't see any of the above enough to keep it going long term. If it was a $1 cheaper than the whopper; then, I think it could gain a long term audience.

now I dont think thats true, as long as you have a balanced diet, Veganism can give you all the nutrients you need, it might be boring as hell, but you can live a perfectly normal life as a Vegan

One thing is certain...regardless of how it tastes or how good or bad for you it is, the vegans will let you know they are vegans and eating this trash within two minutes of meeting them.

"Other" reasons being the key here.

This won't work, but not because of taste or price. But rather because one of the main reasons many people are Vegan is because it's considered hip and enlightened and trendy. Part of the appeal is that you only eat at cool, healthy vegan places and buy everything at Trader Joe's etc. It's part of your identity. Eating at Burger King doesn't fit the motif.

Seriously, let's see how the venture fares before declaring it's an example of the market listening to demand.

It's called "essential fatty acids". No matter what BS the vegans will tell you, you can't get them from plants... only from meat & dairy. There's no such thing as an essential carbohydrate.

It's a very unhealthy fad. It slowly kills the liver, weakens your bones, and creates a shortage of nutrients necessary to maintain a healthy chemical balance. This is part of the reason why vegans suffer a much higher rate of anxiety & depression related health issues. It's very unhealthy.

Some veggies are good for you, but trying to deny the obvious fact that humans were designed to eat meat... that's just foolishness.

I thought I might give some of their products a try but, you're right, they simple aren't much better for you if any. On a calorie only basis there were some products that were worse for you than their meat counterparts. I'm not about to eat a plant based sausage that doesn't save me a bunch of a calories.

I don't think vegan is a fad. I have even given some consideration to trying vegetarian but struggled with finding things I wanted to eat. Now I do like 1 day a week meat free.

I wasn't speaking specifically about vegan whoppers. You do understand BK is not the first place to try some vegan options. It isn't even the first fast food chain to offer a vegan burger. It is just the most recent has made news due to it being one to the top fast food chains. Many restaurants chains and non chains have had vegan options for years now. Hell even Poppa Rollos has had vegan options for at least a few years now.

Vegan options seem to be spreading. Hence the Adam Smith reference.

Read through the thread please. The reason I am dubious is because of history.

A 'vegan option' is a great thing, but the Impossible Whopper does not qualify as a vegan option, since animal fat is used to grill the product.

Burger King has a clear business model, and salads/veggies are not part of it.

The McLean was created to try and generate a market. There already is a plant based market out there that wants these products. It will continue and grow. It is one step closer to healthier eating.

You have that backwards. Good nutrition comes from a whole food plant based diet. There are no micronutrients and phytochemicals in a meat centric diet, A meat centric diet promotes atherosclerosis, embolic strokes, type 2 diabetes, other chronic disease and some cancers.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about. A whole food plant based diet provides all of the nutrients you need for health. There is nothing, I repeat nothing that you need from meat, and there is nothing you cannot get from plants such as protein, amino acids, and omega 3s. What you won't get from plants is heart disease, embolic strokes, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. You will get micronutrients and phytochemicals that are required for a fully functioning immune system. The research is overwhelming. www.nutritionfacts.org
