Mayo Clinic to furlough or reduce pay of 30,000 employees

Quote:

Mayo Clinic is furloughing or reducing the hours of about 42 percent of its 70,000 employees across all of its campuses in an attempt to mitigate the financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Department managers at the clinic have been reaching out to employees all week about these changes.
"Approximately 30,000 staff from across all Mayo locations will receive reduced hours or some type of furlough, though the duration will vary depending on the work unit," according to a statement on Wednesday from spokeswoman Ginger Plumbo.

As these will be furloughs, not layoffs, Mayo Clinic will continue to pay for the health care benefits for all of its employees while they are off work.

This is latest step in Mayo Clinic's financial stabilization strategy to address an anticipated $3 billion loss due to the pandemic forcing a temporary halt in all elective procedures and average medical appointments.
At the end of March, Mayo Clinic started by furloughing an undisclosed number of supplemental and contract employees.
Soon after that, a wider plan was announced with furloughs and wage reductions marked to save $1.4 billion.

Today and yesterday added. Trending down, which is good. New York City, just the five boroughs, would rank 4th in the world in cases and 6th in deaths. So it's no surprise that when they have their lowest number of new cases and deaths in a month that it moves the needle for overall US numbers.

States are opening up. We'll begin to get an idea of the impact in two to three weeks. The model the White House has been using was revised this morning upward to 74,073 deaths by August 4th, presumably due in part to the states opening up. It will be noteworthy and sad to see who disappears from this board.

I'll just agree to disagree with you, TS(should be BS?)

If you are so uninformed that YOU have to ask ME "who are the Globalists?" then do YOU really think I could get YOU to understand who the Globalists were? Laughing til stomach aches

Think about that

Anyway while all of your pandemic scare has been happening we've made enough profits for the down payment and closing costs to buy the new home we got under contract in January. Beautiful home on golf course close to the bay. Perfect for wife and I and great adventure for grandsons. Anyway, we'll be closing and moving today, so this is all the time I have for anti-capitalists like you

State officials stressed that the actual death rate is much lower, because there are as many as 100 unconfirmed infections for every one lab-confirmed case in Minnesota. And due to a supply shortage, the state's testing strategy focused largely on hospitalized patients and long-term care residents. That inflated the per-case death rate.

Sweden's death toll per capita is 6 times those of its most similar comparables (Norway/Finland). Not sure I would say they are the best example.

You may be correct, but as I read it Sweden has not run out of hospital beds or vents. Those who are at little or no risk are contracting the disease, surviving, and are now immune. They did this without shutting down their economy. Their neighboring states took a different tact.

I think we agree that a vaccine is more than a year away. Do you think the other Scandinavian countries can stay closed until a vaccine comes out? Me neither.

When the other countries finally open up there will be more disease and deaths until herd immunity is established. In the meantime, much economic damage will have been done and people will die anyway.

Time will tell if Sweden's strategy was good or bad.

Even if they don't I prefer their balanced approach to mitigate economic fallout. I think a middle ground approach in a representative society (as opposed to totalitarian society) is more sustainable over a longer time horizon and is thus the better long-term strategy to mitigate both disease and economic fallout.

If that makes me a selfish ******* in some people's opinion so be it.

New York Times on Sweden

Long article, excerpts below

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/28/world/europe/sweden-coronavirus-herd-immunity.html

Quote:

The country was an outlier in Europe, trusting its people to voluntarily follow the protocols. Many haven't, but it does not seem to have hurt them.

While other countries were slamming on the brakes, Sweden kept its borders open, allowed restaurants and bars to keep serving, left preschools and grade schools in session and placed no limits on public transport or outings in local parks. Hairdressers, yoga studios, gyms and even some cinemas have remained open.

Gatherings of more than 50 people are banned. Museums have closed and sporting events have been canceled. At the end of March, the authorities banned visits to nursing homes.

That's roughly it. There are almost no fines, and police officers can only ask people to oblige. Pedestrians wearing masks are generally stared at as if they have just landed from Mars.

Throughout the crisis Sweden has had enough intensive care units to deal with Covid-19 patients, the minister of health and social affairs, Lena Hallengren, said in an interview, referring to the disease caused by the virus. "We have 250 empty beds right now."

The Swedish Public Health Authority has admitted that the country's seniors have been hit hard, with the virus spreading through 75 percent of the 101 care homes in Stockholm. Employees of the homes complain of shortages of personal protective equipment.

From the first signs of the pandemic, the Swedish Public Health Authority decided that a lockdown would be pointless. "Once you get into a lockdown, it's difficult to get out of it," the country's state epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, said. "How do you reopen? When?"

While there was some early talk in Sweden of achieving "herd immunity," which would mean infecting at least 60 percent of the population, Mr. Tegnell denies that was ever the government's policy.

When responses are assessed after the crisis, Mr. Tegnell acknowledges, Sweden will have to face its broad failing with people over the age of 70, who have accounted for a staggering 86 percent of the country's 2,194 fatalities to date.

That percentage is roughly on par with most other countries, but some critics here say the mortality rate among seniors could have been far lower with adequate preparation. In a letter to one of Sweden's most prominent newspapers, Dagens Nyheter, 22 scientists accused the Public Health Authority of negligence.

What will be interesting is how many of them start suing. Is it even legal to mandate a % of capacity? An owner doesnt get to reduce his rent or costs by 75% just because the state mandated that only 25% of his restaurant be used.

I think you might see a lot of really interesting lawsuits arise against states and even the federal government. I dont know how many (if any) will win but Im guessing there will be some super interesting cases for future law school students to study.

I mentioned it in another thread but a Bridal shop in Columbus is suing the state of Ohio essentially arguing that their definition of essential was arbitrary and they didnt really have the right to order businesses to close. Im doubtful that they win but the initial layout of the case was certainly an interesting read.

The governor of Ohio also had some "mandates" that essentially read you had to rearrange your office to maintain 6' distancing...I paid a small fortune for design and layout of my wife's office, unless the state is planning to reimburse me for paying someone to change the layout there is no way I am doing that.

Sovereign immunity and force Majeure are gonna get a workout in the courts. At least three colleges are already facing suits by students, Liberty U being one.

Odd which "institutions" you mention being sued and by whom in above?

Colleges being sued for exerting freedom, but not governments for its overreach???

Is that part of your libertarian platform? I thought libertarians like you were all for freedoms?

Perhaps you should try Socialism that exists predominantly in democrat party today? You might find that a better fit?

'Anecdotal evidence is overwhelmingly positive': Nearly 2,600 COVID-19 patients in the U.S. have been treated with plasma

https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2020/04/27/nearly-2-600-covid-19-patients-u-s-treated-survivor-plasma-coronavirus/3033521001/

Quote:

Hospitals and clinics across the country have given plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients to almost 2,600 of those still sick with the disease, and so far no major safety problems have arisen, according to experts who have been tracking the data..

The 2,600 patients include 14 at UW Health in Madison, where anesthesiologist William Hartman said, "We're quite encouraged by the results that we've seen. ... Nationally, what we're hearing is that it does appear to be a very safe treatment"

It is not clear yet whether the patients who have improved have done so because of the plasma infusion, Hartman said, or because of "exceptional care they are receiving" from nurses and attending physicians.

"It's not a magic pill," he said of the plasma. "It does take some time, but the fact that we are seeing some patients get better is very encouraging."

Dude. I'm telling you these lawsuits are out there and what they are about. I made no political stances as to any of them.

As to govt lawsuits the state of Missouri has sued China. Feel better now snowflake?
