Quote:

One of the nation's largest cruise operators is offering up its ships as part of the effort to quell the coronavirus outbreak, President Donald Trump said Thursday.
Carnival Corp. said it will offer select ships for use in response to the crisis.
The company explained in a Thursday news release the ships would not be used for treating those with coronavirus or who are under quarantine. Rather, they are being made available for patients being treated for normal hospital stays those recovering from surgeries or alike.
The idea would be to free up beds in land-based hospitals so those beds could be used for the expected influx of coronavirus patients.
Trump said the offer came in a conversation with Carnival Chairman Micky Arison. The company, like the rest of the cruise industry, experienced a major shutdown after passengers on various cruise ships around the globe began contracting and spreading the virus. .

Covid-19: Could the coronavirus pandemic accelerate autonomous mining?

Quote:

Pilbara, Western Australia
Uptake of automated mine solutions including self-driving haul trucks and remote operations centres has been slow but steady. One of the earliest moves into automation came with global mining giant Rio Tinto's Mine of the Future initiative in 2008. From a remote operations centre in Perth, Western Australia, workers operate autonomous mining vehicles at mines more than 1,200km away in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Around a third of the haul truck fleet at Rio Tinto's Pilbara mines are autonomous. These trucks can continuously track the locations, speeds and directions of other vehicles, meaning that material can be moved safely and efficiently as well as more productively without human presence.
Rio Tinto added a new facet to its automated operation in 2019 with the deployment of its AutoHaul system, which brought autonomous trains to the Pilbara project. The system is the largest autonomous railway in the world and can transport approximately a million tonnes of iron ore per day.
Pilbara is very much a hotspot of automation innovation, with commodity giant BHP also deploying several autonomous operations at their Pilbara mines as part of BHP's Next Generation Mining programme. A GlobalData report found that mine operations in Australasia are some of the most technologically advanced in the world.

The following numbers are from Worldometer.

March 19: 4,530 new cases, 57 new deaths
March 20: 5,594 new cases, 49 new deaths
March 21: 4,824 new cases, 46 new deaths

Good news but too small a sample to call it a trend yet

The trend I like is low mortality and comparatively low case numbers. To even get in the ball park of some of the catastrophic numbers (100,000 deaths), we would need to be adding 50-75k cases per day for several months.

The underlying question I'd like to know is, what do officials need to see to believe we've reached a satisfactory containment or an acceptable risk level or have "flattened the curve" to return to some semblance of normalcy? So far these haven't been overwhelming numbers by any measure.

Socialism is out there, waiting for its opportunity to take over in the US.

We no longer have First World problems. We now have Third World problems for the first time in the lives of anyone younger than their early 80s.

I think the target is to flatten new case increase at or below hospital capacity. We've been on the same trajectory as was Italy early on.

Probably a sustained decrease for some number of weeks, because you know if you have people mingling with each other as before, the process of new cases will start all over again.

Lol just no. I mean yeah life isn't as fun as it was a few weeks ago but we do not have 3rd world problems. The only way someone would say that is if they have never been to a 3rd world country.

Big jump in new cases today. Will update when daily cycle ends at 8pm EST (12am GMT). Mortality rate remains steady. Deaths are still overwhelmingly (97%+) over 65 and/or underlying health condition.

Hmm.....ok. It is only a matter of life wasn't as fun this past week as it usually is to get a week off of work. I think you "the virus is a hoax" or "is nothing and under control" folks might be in for some more rude surprises.

The hype and panic may very well turn life into a deep pockets contest. Those with the most cash and guns and ammunition will survive. Got my Mel Gibson Road Warrior costume ready to go. LOL!

They had to shut down the one in Ennis (just south of Dallas) as people were not following the stay in vehicle rules.

Until there is **** running down the street and the water in your tap is not drinkable, there is no rule of law, houses don't have TVs or cell phones, you're wearing the same clothes because you can't get to the river to wash them...trust me, we don't have 3rd world problems. We have some 1st world inconveniences right now.
