Many Things: Big 12 Championsip Game vs. Oklahoma State
Baylor and Oklahoma State faced off for the second time in 2021 to play for the Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma State defeated Baylor 24-14 in the first matchup. Here are the many things during the game which stood out.
- The traning wheels are definitely not on in Blake Shapen’s second game and then bal security rears it’s ugly head again. Must protect the ball against an aggressive defense
- Crucial to get a drive going to and the slanting defense from Oklahoma State fills the hole to stop the Bears second drive. Bears need to make something happen on offense after two disappointing drives without points
- The momentum changing play Baylor needed on the interception from JT Woods taking the ball to the 11 and Baylor goes with the big package and Ben Sims is wide open on a 3rd and one with a tremendous play fake by Shapen and the Bears capitalize.
- Momentum has shifted to Baylor with the Matt Jones interception and Baylor goes for the kill shot resulting in a pass interference in the end zone and the Bears end the 1st quarter up 7-3 on the 3 yard line.
- Cool as a cucumber Blake Shapen hits Drew Estrada in the end zone for 14-3 lead on a beautiful blitz pick up by Abram Smith and the play would not have happened if he didn't cut Brock Martin
- The defense is starting to believe and forces a three and out on outstanding playsin the backfield by Jalen Pitre and Terrel Bernard and while the drive doesn’t amount to points, Oklahoma State is pinned deep at their 8 yard line and the defense forces another three and out.
- The offense continues to add new wrinkles, but a major mistake of youth on an intentional grounding which looked like a lateral which was recovered by Oklahoma State and Shapen to Tyquan Thornton brings the boos out from Oklahoma State faithful and the lead is now 21-3
- Oklahoma State has trailed like this in games against Texas and Boise State and come back to win. Baylor will need to continue to push the accelorator on offense to keep the Cowboys at bay.
- The first incompletion of the game for Shapen happens with 25 seconds to go in the first half.
- Oklahoma State gets some redemption with a blocked field goal to end the half and Baylor is up 21-6
- And Spencer Sanders has now thrown three interceptions in each game against Baylor
- The interception is basically a delay with Baylor going 4 and out at the 36, and after a 15 yard penalty on each team, Oklahoma State scores to pull within 8. Oklahoma State is a veteran team and will not lay down.
- The playcalling has gotten cute and questionable in the 3rd quarter and the momentum has swung to Oklahoma State. Baylor needs a stop on defense and more points.
- There is the momentum change on the Brayden Utley interception deep in Cowboy teritory and Grant Miller records a reception on a deflected pass and Baylor will attempt a field goal to extend the lead. The fourth interception is a Big 12 Championship game record. And momenturm returns to Oklahoma State with the missed field goal.
- Baylor needs to get off the field and a sack by Bernad and Siaki Ika and then great pursuit by Matt Jones leads to a punt that is muffed by Trestan Ebner to give the ball back to Oklahoma State in great field position. And Oklahoma State capitilizes with a field goal to get within 5.
- Baylor must answer or it will be a 23-21 or 22-21 victory for Oklahoma State. Shapen just doesn’t look right following the 28 yard run where he got up slowly. He missed one down and the team has gone away from him throwing the ball following it.
- Defense is going to have to win this game for the Bears after missing two field goals from a usually reliable Hankins.
- Defense gets the stop and the offense has 3:51 to kill for the Bears to be Big 12 Champions in all three major sports for 2021.
- Offense goes 3 and out and burns 19 seconds of clock
- Defense will need to win the game and not give up 85 yards in 3:23
- The Kill Chant has begun
- All the balls bouncing Oklahoma State’s way as the Cowboys march down the field
- BAYLOR WINS!
