Positives

  • Domination on the glass 34-16
  • Perimeter defense (OU 5-20 from 3)
  • Made free throws (16-20 for 80%)
  • Timely blocks- Mayer on Umoja Gibson which led to a layup on the other end
  • Flo said No on a corner Gibson 3 as well
  • Shot it well from the field (61% from 2; 43% from 3)

Needs Work

  • Ball movement, a lot of dribbling on the perimeter
  • Which led to turnovers- 20 of them
  • Interior defense, way too many layups for OU
  • Free throw defense (OU shot 85% from the foul line)
  • Urgency, a little going through the motions in this one

My thoughts:

We played with jet lag after the Iowa St trip.

Our freshman played like freshman. Brown really struggled on defense.

Crowd was decent. Especially without students.

Refs were awful, especially the ref with the shaved head. It's been a long time since I have seen Drew so upset with the officiating.

Good teams find a way, even when they are not at their best.....and we did.

Matthew made several outstanding plays down the stretch, even with four fouls. The block of the three point attempt and the following length of the floor drive for the reverse lay up was a top 10 play.

OU was better than anyone thought. They are quick, play very good defense and are well coached. And they shot light out last night.

Not hard to do when the majority of their shots were barely contested layups & dunks.

It's simple, Akinjo DRIBBLES TOO MUCH. C'mon Coach Drew, coach him.

Agree. So glad we picked a night to shoot really well. Our help defense didn't seem to show up. We would give up a driving lane expecting it to be filled but no one was there. I don't know if OU figured out how to attack it or if we were just too lethargic for some reason.

We've gone against some pretty well coached teams so far this year and none of them could figure it out so I'm thinking (hoping)it is the latter.

Porter Moser is going to do a good job.

I thought our defensive help / rotations were slower than normal (not bad, because they're usually outstanding, but they were not outstanding). Sense of urgency just didn't seem to be there for a lot of the team for most of the game.

Akinjo put us on his back and bailed us out. I'm worried that he's our only elite ball handler.

Mayer had some really high motor plays after losing half a tooth.

Some very sloppy/lackadaisical passes contributed to 20 turnovers.

Got a win against a good team without our best effort.

Offensive fouls count as turnovers. The one late in the second half called against Akinjo in the lane….I won't say what it looked like since I don't bet on the games.

My main problem with that call was I thought it was inconsistent with 3-4 calls we did not get going the other way.

Exactly what I thought. If they get that call, there were 3 other times we got called for blocking that should have been a charge.

Hard to emphasize how difficult it is to win in this conference, especially as the defending national champion and current No. 1 in the country. The bullseye on BU is huge. Couple that with the fatigue that sets in after a long road trip and the lack of sharpness on defense is understandable, especially from the freshmen.
