Great 2nd half bears! But anybody else notice the inbound plays by KSU where our team didn't even have a clue that the ball was inbounded, shot quickly and in the air, heading towards the basket. And no one's ready to rebound but KSU. Seems like something we need to fix because we'll see it again.

Just struggling on offense

This. Mayer is the most misunderstood player on this team. He's been really good this year in every area but shooting the basketball. And because he's shot poorly, everyone ignores the many good things he does every game.

If Mayer was shooting at his normal percentages, he'd be a first-team all-Big 12 pick. And it's not like he's taking bad shots either. He just hasn't hit shots he made with regularity in the past. It is what it is. But those here trashing him every game are more frustrating to me than he is.

Trying too hard, so much so that he doesn't have control of his body imo. He needs to focus on D and rebounding and just pass the ball until he gets a wide open 2 point shot and we have the lead.
Scorers need to shoot. Mayer needs to keep attacking and shooting when he's open. The slump will end eventually.

Way too early question - do we look ready for Texas?
That which does not kill me, will try again and get nastier

Yep. Most people can't get MM as a frost out of their head. He's averaging less than 1 TO per game with increased ball handling duties.

Some semblance of a low post game tonight with JTT. He will be an All-American next year. I really do believe that. Still too many sloppy possessions and I attribute that to Akinjo's style. Really good defense in the 2nd half with nice switching 1-5 and then getting on the boards. Then again it is KSU, but Pack is a special player.

Still think KB needs to attack more. Bonner looking like an improved player overall as he is kind of getting the hang of D1 bball. A bit more consistency from Flagler would be nice and I have nothing to say about Mayer.

Thamba ought to be better at this point in the post. It would be nice bc this team needs a tour de force down low.

Going to be a dogfight to the end and if they can dig in and find it in them again there is hope for a good tourney run.

KENTUCKY WILL BE YOUR NATIONAL CHAMPION THIS YEAR THOUGH !!!
Akinjo had eight assists to two turnovers. If we were sloppy tonight (we weren't outside of the first 10 minutes), it wasn't his fault.

He handles the ball well, he passes well, he rebounds well, he defends. The only thing he's done poorly is shoot. And that's an anomaly for him. I choose to appreciate the good things he's doing rather than ***** about the areas in which he's struggling.

He plays his butt off. He had 5 rebounds in 12 minutes.

Liked the energy tonight. We played with more confidence. This team could still do major damage come March.

This team is in trouble. I have never seen Mayer shoot a total air-ball and Drew keeps benching him. Not exactly confidence building.

You have to be careful with this kind of thing bc it can kill confidence but all things being equal I would try to bring Mayer off the bench. Think it would help. Get him involved in specific sets where he's moving or cutting. Get away from the Iso handoff with him. Needs plays where he is already headed downhill. Really struggling getting a step on anyone and hasn't been able to break down his defender. Once forced to rise and shoot over and we know that isn't going well right now.

The important thing is whether or not tonight's win on the road met BUGWBBear's approval or not? He may have turned it off since the Bears turned things around in the 2nd half.

If you watch the Mayer segment of "Our Time", he said that this year he was focusing on defense more. He is deliberately not focusing on the shooting part of the game.

He said he's "deliberately not focusing on shooting" call bs on that. He may be putting a greater emphasis on defense but that comment is hilariously inaccurate

At least not as much as before. That's how I interpreted his comments. Watch the video.

I like MM, I'm not one of the ones that wants him benched. I think he has some body control issues, but there's a role for a strong ball handler, rebounder, and defensive player on this team. He fits that. Less pressure on shooting may just get him out of the slump sooner imo. I'm not saying never shoot, still has to be a bit of a threat there.

The thing about Mayer is he's not taking bad shots or too many shots right now. He's just missing makeable shots. If he were forcing a bunch of garbage, I might agree with you. But I'm perfectly happy with his shot selection. He just needs to shoot at a higher percentage. That's not going to happen if he gets gun shy and starts playing timid.

And we need him to keep taking open shots to space the floor for others. Mayer's a really talented offensive player. He just needs to keep playing with confidence and hope that talent wins out in the end.

Yeah, that is good, but I'm just talking about his style. To me he is like a waterbug out there without direction. He does play hard though and I can't fault him for that. We need him bc he is the only legit PG we have.

No complaints about the 2nd half...one of the better halves we've played in quite a while.

Those are my words, not Matthew's. I interpreted what he said to mean essentially that. Maybe I should have said focusing more on defense than offense. I don't remember his precise words. Anyone who wants to know only needs to watch that episode.
