WACO, Texas – Baylor softball fell to Iowa State, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium, letting the Cyclones even the series.

In a pretty even matchup, the game stayed knotted at 1-1 until a five-run seventh inning sealed the win for Iowa State.

Both teams retired the side during the first two innings, with Baylor starting pitcher Aliyah Binford pitching a perfect game through three.

The Bears got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Ana Watson reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a stolen base and Cyclone error. With Watson at third, McKenzie Wilson singled through the right side for the first hit of the game and brought Watson home.

Answering in the fourth, Iowa State scored a run after a runner moved to third and was brought home on a fielder’s choice.

Emily Hott singled in the bottom of the fourth, but wasn’t able to come around and score. Both teams went three-up, three-down in the fifth inning.

A string of hits and errors benefitted the Cyclones in the top of the seventh as they were able to plate five runs in the inning.

With their last chance of the game, two Bears reached on errors in the bottom of the seventh with two-out, but a groundout ended the threat and the chance to win the game.

Glenn Moore on the game …

“Aliyah threw an outstanding game again. Our pitchers are in sync, but we can’t score runs. We’ve been playing good defense, but we didn’t late in the game today. We made some good defensive plays early on, I thought, but they did as well. It’s really two close-matched teams. We’re really where we should be if we’re two equal teams, so it’s 1-1, and we’ll see who can win it tomorrow.”

McKenzie Wilson about chances to score runs and get it done…

“Absolutely, when you have a pitcher like Aliyah out there working her hardest to put zeros on the scoreboard for the opposing team, it’s our job offensively to push some runs across for her so she can pitch at least more comfortable. I think today, the frustrating part is we played six innings of hard, strong softball. Unfortunately, the game of softball is seven innings, so we need to play all seven innings hard. As you probably saw, we didn’t get a lot of breaks today as far as offensively; we hit the ball hard, couldn’t really find holes, they made plays. And then for the defensive part, (when) Aliyah is pitching a great game like that, the defense needs to back her up.”
