35 Days till Kickoff: 35 Points in a Single Quarter, Twice

Baylor scored 35 or more points in a game just four times last season, the most successful season in program history. But that is not the stat we are highlighting today. Imagine scoring 35 points in a single quarter. Many of you surely don’t have to imagine it though, since the Bears did that back in 2013.

In its third and final non-conference game, Baylor tied a program record by hanging 35 points on the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in the first frame. Bryce Petty threw for two touchdowns and ran in a third for the Bears’ offense. Meanwhile, pick-sixes by Joe Williams and Terrell Burt pushed the Baylor lead to 35-0.

Petty totaled 351 yards and 4 TDs before being pulled early in the second half. And most insanely, this was normal for the Bears in 2013. They started the year scoring more points in their first three games than anyone since the 1930s, and they scored at least 28 points in the first quarter of each of their first three games.

The first time Baylor scored 35 points in one quarter was in 1994 though. The Bears set this program record by dominating San Jose State in every phase of the game. Baylor scored two rushing TDs, one passing, one pick-six, and even a blocked punt returned for a TD.

35 points in one quarter is an impressive feat, and it’s that much more impressive that the Bears have accomplished it twice.
