The 1-3-1: No. 18 Baylor (12-4, 3-1) at West Virginia (11-4, 2-2)

January 14, 2023

After getting upset at home 70-65 by a scrappy Oklahoma State squad, No. 18 Baylor (12-4, 3-1) heads to Morgantown for a 2:00 p.m. tip against West Virginia (11-4, 2-2). If the loss to the Cowgirls proved anything, it was that this might be the deepest the Big 12 has been on the Women’s side in years, as every team has at least one conference loss.

Here is the 1-3-1 on the Bears vs WVU.

One Player:

Everything West Virginia does runs through fifth-year senior guard Madisen Smith. The South Carolina native notched her twelfth double-double of the season during Tuesday’s 75-45 victory over TCU.

Smith led WVU in scoring for the fifth time this season, recording 18 points and shooting 5-of-9 from the field (55.5%). She also added eight assists, as well as a pair of steals.

Three Nuggets:

● Baylor holds an impressive 22-3 ledger in the all-time series with West Virginia and is a perfect 9-0 in Morgantown.

● The Mountaineers are 7-1 at home this season, suffering their only loss at the WVU Coliseum to Oklahoma, 98-77.

● WVU is led by Dawn Plitzuweit, who is in her first year with the program. She most recently served a six-year stint at South Dakota, who upset Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

One Quote:

Following the loss to Oklahoma State, head coach Nicki Collen spoke on the challenge ahead as the Bears look to bounce back in Morgantown.

“I mean, it's not easy to play in West Virginia. We played well there last year but there’s a lot of new faces for them with a new coach as well,” said Collen. “They get a lot off their bench, and their bigs  (Savannah) Samuel and (Jayla) Hemingway have been really good this season.”

“We're gonna have to work to score, we're gonna have to make them work,” continued Collen. “We're gonna have to contain their guards and keep (Kylee) Blackstem from scoring around the rim and we're gonna have to keep the ball away from the corner.”

Watch/Listen

The contest between the Bears (12-4, 3-1 Big 12) and the Mountaineers (11-4, 2-2 Big 12) airs nationally on ESPNU, and will be the second nationally-televised game for Baylor this season.

A live radio broadcast is also available for fans on the Varsity Network App and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter or live stats.

Thanks Nikki! Now we're probably going to lose our top 25 rank streak second only to UConn!
That streak has been a dead man walking since April 2021. Be thankful it lasted as long as it did.

I love Nikki but c'mon man! We should be winning these games!

This will be the first poll since December 29, 2003, that we are unranked.

Without Blackwell at full speed and without Edwards we just don't have the muscle. Bickle is doing about all she can. We will live and die by the three.

Hard to get upset with CNC when those two can't play, but on the other hand, we have won for so many years in a row, even when we had the injury bug. It is hard to swallow no longer being the brand of the Big 12, but we aren't.

That wasn't going to last forever so we just start another streak. As far as being the leader of the conference, we can get that back.

They looked great today at times. However, they are still to careless with the ball; lots of silly turnovers that really end up hurting in the end. I don't think it's 'The sky is falling' time, they just need to continue to work on eliminating the sloppiness.
Well I ain't no greenhorn!!

They knew Edwards most likely wouldn't be able to play. That's a mute excuse. Now Alijah is a good excuse.

I still think we are a ok shooting team. We have no real post threat. Literally none. We have 3 short guards with a mediocre mid range game. And streaky 3 pointers. That's not a good mix. Then we have one freshman who can't shoot but us good everywhere else. Bella will be really good, just not now. This isn't a good team Setup. We will struggle to stay in to 25. With the hope Blackwell can get closer to 85-90 percent at the tourney.

Nice team. Good team, just not real good.

This team comes down to Sarah has to be a star every night for us to win. And her shooting under 38 percent isn't going to help in the long run. Others has to raise up.

I was excited for coach. I'm have disappointed in her adjustments and recruiting to be honest. The two freshman are good, but certainly not program changers. Good but not great that's for sure.

It will have to wait till next year I guess. Another set of recruits snd transfers to get the type of players she wants. And maybe a post that can score.

Deepest or is this the worst Baylor Women's team in years? More of both of these in my opinion.

Has to be our worst defensive inside and out I have seen in years. The worst posts I have seen in years. Worst midrange shooting I have seen in years. Better overall 3 point shooting. We have 4 ladies that can hit 3s. And 5 with Bickle. That hasn't happened in years or if ever.

Honestly this is the worst ladies team in 10+ years for sure and blaming the completion is better isn't telling the whole truth.

Geez, Heartland site calling this a "program defining" win for WV. Easily the worst Baylor team in many years.

Whatever it is, Coach Glockenspiel obviously has Nikki's number, since she was the one who sent us packing last year with a mediocre South Dakota team.

Excuse making for bad team design and not so good coaching. Just sad to see what we are turning out to be.

I liked the hire. I like the Coach. But, disappointed in what she has turned out to be.

I am wondering if her family still on the east coast is effecting her??

I've been saying this for a while now - Mulkey had lasting success because she pounded the ball inside. High percentage shots allowed her teams to rarely suffer from a "bad" night. It was a philosophy that rarely translated to the WNBA, hence the few and far between successes we created in the league. Our run around and reliance on the 3 is painful to watch, especially when we are having a bad shooting night, but our overall inability to create our own shot and play for a full 40 minutes is even worse. Under this style of play, we will have bad nights. We will have off shooting days. We will lose games that we never in a million years should have lost. But the last two games represent a painful reality in that this team is not producing how they should be. They are not prepared as they should be. They, quite simply, are not playing high qualify basketball. It is often times extremely painful to watch. She s going to have to step it up a bit, get her team prepared, and have them preform on the court if she plans to have a long future in college athletics. She is one of the kindest people in the game right now, but kindness doesn't win basketball games, and recruits are only going to buy into the history of the program for so long. You can't go from last week's results to this week's results without losing focus. That is on the staff. Just an overall pathetic week. Extremely frustrating to witness.

Agree with your assessment. I remember all the flack KM took after the Oregon State loss in the tourney, but there are times when a three point team is red hot and there just isn't a whole lot to do about it. KM's teams played high caliber defense. The downside for the three point team though is that they are going to be off some games, and as you say, they will lose games they should not lose in a million years.

Mulkey's formula works, and unlike others, I was not disappointed with a NC every 7 years. Would our fans take that now? Yea- I am guessing so. I miss that toughness.

Even if we knew Dre was not going to be able to play, I have no issue with us taking her...she seems like she plans to be here next year, and if we got her on board in the system to play next year- it wasn't a bad move. I think we would have won today and against OSU if Blackwell was healthy, even without Dre. Blackwell's muscle and confidence is needed. I think we are a ten point better team if she is healthy and playing. The others will play better too with her on the court.

Agree something is really off with this team this week. Wish I knew the answer. I remain supportive--but it is hard getting used to seeing the disorganization on the court.

Since it was thd first time they beat Baylor in their own court, I can see why they would see if that way. However, "program defining" implies a major impact going forward. No one knows if this will elevate them or if they will continue as they have been this season. I expect the Lady Bears will be highly motivated when they travel to Waco.

I agree that having Aijah close to 100% would make big difference for this team. It was very good to see her back. As Nicki mentioned, it will take time for her to get back to where she was before injury. Hopefully Aijah can continue to progress.

The team has seemed "off" this week. I know Nicki
mentioned Kendra was not with team due to personal reasons.
It seems some of girls are close with Kendra. Wondering if this situation could have caused a loss of focus.

You do blame the coach for not realizing it's an off night and calling different plays that will result in higher percentage shots. It's also not smart for a team to take 40 3 pointers. Can't live and die by the 3. Will result in many losses.

Isn't the job of a coach to call plays and make adjustments? Or is it the players just throwing up 3's.

Coach just looks lost so many times.
Olympia3
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Or how about recruiting. Have two freshman that are solid. But one literally can't shoot outside a layup and we have no real posts. Neither of ours transfers are posts.

More I see the more I see NC isn't the right coach Enough of following the legend crap. Look at Notre Dame. Muffett left a super small depth just like Kim did.

They had zero posts and a small bench and she found two posts. One EBo from Texas.

Too much excuse making fir our coach. I totally understand giving her more time, but our AD better tell her this is unacceptable.

Our AD's fan club all came here last year explaining how women's sports don't matter, and this saves us money, which is more important anyway. I hope Coach Collen gets things figured out, but in our AD's eyes, the bar is very low, and no amount of losing will ever be unacceptable as long as it doesn't cost football and men's basketball any money.

She runs an offense that allows for 3-40. She is literally the one you hold responsible. Cater your offense to your personnel. That is case and point the responsibility of a coach.

You can call it nonsense, or whatever you like to minimalize our trend downward, but it is a real sign of concern when we drop out of the top twenty-five for the first time in almost twenty years. And, have you watched the last couple of games and seen the way we are playing? Do you watch the games? It ain't pretty.
