Yeah, that is the key point that most of the media miss when they talk about our Natty team. Not only were they all older, but guys like Teague, Mitchell and Flag transferred during the old process whereby they had to sit out. So while a lot of people remembered Butler, Mitchell and Teague had played together on the COVID shortened year, they didn't remember the fact all of them had practiced together (along with Vital) even longer. As had JTT, who had practiced with the '20 COVID year team.
In a perfect world pre-transfer portal, the "get old stay old" model won us a national title. But the transfer portal turned everything upside down because the quality transfers are going to want to play immediately instead of sit out a year. As per usual, Drew is ahead of the curve with getting one-and-dones the past 2 recruiting cycles and mixing them in with transfers and 4 year players. Gotta credit Drew for pivoting and embracing this new reality.
What has the transfer portal really changed for Baylor basketball? Having those guys available immediately is a good thing, not a bad thing. All of the transfers we've added -- other than the DII/DIII guys -- would have played immediately if they had been available. And most had multiple years of eligibility, so it would have just accelerated those teams' progress.

In football, where teams are losing starters every year, the portal represents a major sea change. I just don't see it in college basketball, at least where a program like Baylor that rarely loses transfers is concerned.

We're recruiting one-and-dones because we can and because we think it's our best path to a nationally competitive team. Time will tell how effective that strategy is, but outside of the AD team, it hasn't worked very well for Calipari at Kentucky, and didn't work very well when Coach K went that route at Duke.

If only CSD were as smart as you.

Considering you are an anoonymous message board poster and CSD is a national champion, yep.

Do you know what a logic fallacy is?

Coach K is arguably the greatest college coach of all time. His program couldn't avoid the natural volatility that comes with consistently fielding freshmen-led teams.

Call me fallacious but Drew won a natty. Feel he deserves a bit of rope with recruiting / roster construction.

No one has said anything negative about Drew. This is another case of you turning a nuanced philosophical disagreement into an attack that isn't occurring.

Your act is beyond tired.

Your constant whining about our team roster contruction and CSD's recruitment of one-and-done players? OK

Expressing concern or even disagreement with an apparent recruiting philosophy shift -- away from one that built a national champion and toward one that hasn't worked that well for other high-profile coaches and programs -- isn't whining.

Contrary to what you might believe, this board doesn't exist so we can all agree with every decision our coaches ever make and defend everything our teams ever do. Nor does it exist so we can rationalize our star freshman's every 5-for-18 shooting effort. It exists to discuss all aspects of our basketball program.

If you can't handle open discussion or differing opinions, this may not be the place for you.

Likewise back at ya. If you complain and whine about CSD who lead us to a title and a perennial top 5 program, you can expect some resistance from me. I'm not going anywhere and will refute nonsense when I read it.

Now that EGOT's gone, there's not a person here who doesn't support/believe in Scott Drew. Few have spent more time or bandwidth singing his praises than I have.

Your effort to turn measured critique/disagreement into an attack on him or his competency is just a lame attempt to shut down a discussion on which reasonable people can disagree.

And before anyone jumps in -- I'm not saying I'd trade KG (a 5 star) for Lohner (transfer with multiple years left).
Obviously. Haha.

But any sane person would trade a freshman Keyonte George for a junior Butler or Mitchell.
Selfishly, I'd like both (the solid transfer supplemented with the 5 star). But therein lies the conundrum. If you get the 5 star, you're not as likely to get the 2-3 year transfer since that guy is often looking to better his position rather than continue playing a role that likely was one of the reasons he departed his current school in the first place. Most are not gonna put themselves in a situation to transfer to a school and end up with less playing time, less of a profile role, etc.
Coach Drew is trying to do exactly that. At the basketball forum in Plano before the season started, he acknowledged that older teams win in March and talked about the need to mix veterans with the highly ranked young players. Time will tell whether it's feasible, but I have been impressed by the coaches' ability to successfully reset each of the last two seasons.

No doubt. For quite awhile Drew has been ahead of the curve in anticipating changes in the environment before they happen. He was at the forefront of realizing non bluebloods need a path to stockpile talent, so he developed the perfect redshirting strategy and use of transfers under the prior 1-year sit out process that has resulted in an unprecedented roll of victories over a 4 season period, including conference championships and a Natty. So, I'm confident he's adjusting under the new environment and will get his structure exactly the way he wants it.

100% agreed and 100% trust in CSD. He will continue to construct a roster comprised of a fluid mix of 5 stars, 4 year guys, redshirts, and transfers. And can be highly selective in finding players who fit our system and culture.
