Bears Squander 12-Point Lead to No. 16 Sooners, Fall in OT 98-92

WACO, Texas — The Baylor Women’s Basketball team (16-7, 7-4) fell 98-92 in overtime to the visiting No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners (19-4, 9-3) despite a 12-point lead with 5:19 to play and a career-high 30 points from Caitlin Bickle. 

Sarah Andrews contributed 20 points of her own, with Darriana Littlepage-Buggs and Ja’Mee Asberry adding 14 and 11 respectively. 

Bickle and Andrews carried the Bears in the frenetic first half, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively before the break.

Their play was highlighted by a 9-0 run lat win the second quarter which was a beautiful sequence of plays.

It started off with a Sarah Andrews three ball, followed by a Jaden Owens block at the other end. Then Owens dished the ball to Andrews who knocked down another three, forcing an Oklahoma timeout. 

After the timeout, Caitlin Bickle knocked down a triple to complete the run.

The green and gold tallied 46 points before hitting the locker room for halftime, but a late 8-0 run by the Sooners kept things close at 46-42.

The refs tightened things up in the third quarter, but Oklahoma committed more of the offenses. After eight total first-half fouls, the Sooners were called for seven and the Bears three.

That did not deter the green and gold offense, who still put up 20 points in the frame and withstood a 7-0 run from the visitors to grow a 54-51 lead into a 66-58 advantage by the quarter break.

The fourth quarter would not go so well for the home team though. 

After a 7-0 run for the Bears boosted the lead to 12, Oklahoma embarked on an 11-1 response making it 76-74 with 2:31 to go.

The Bears missed too many shots down the stretch and a key turnover gave Taylor Robertson the opening she needed to tie the game at 83-83 with a dagger triple. 

Ja’Mee Asberry missed her chance at the winner and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, Oklahoma earned a five-point lead before a pair of Bickle free throws and a clutch Andrews three tied things up again at 90-90. 

Sadly for the green and gold, they could not hang around much longer. Maddie Williams hit a jumper and the Sooners went on to ice the game from the charity stripe. 98-92 final.

Aside from the notable scoring marks, Littlepage-Buggs grabbed 17 boards and Owens dished 14 assists. 

The Bears will be hoping to put up similar offensive stats and find a way to translate that into a win when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma on Saturday. That game will tip off at 2 PM on ESPN+.

Simply put. Baylor WBB team is sloppy and not very good. Look at all the turnovers. CNC has her hands full.

I saw two very obvious OU fouls on critical plays at the end of the game, both of which resulted in the baskets that tied the game. Buggs drew an obvious charge with no whistle that allowed an easy layup for OU to get within three, and it is hard to believe Andrews was knocked down on the in-bound before the game-tying three by a clean steal. Personally, I don't like the way the OU coach teaches her players to play the game. Having a reputation for scratching, clawing and grabbing (terms I heard used during the broadcast and by CNC before the game) isn't basketball -- and the fact that OU had only five more fouls than BU is telling regarding what the refs allow them to get away with. That said, if Baylor made their free throws and protected the basketball better they would have still won the game. On another note, it's truly sad to see all the negative posts constantly added on the forums, lamenting the demise of the program. When we win, there are a few positive posts, but nowhere near the volume when we struggle and/or lose. Any rational person would see this as ridiculous. We won the Big 12 last year, and we're still in the hunt this year. The OU loss is disappointing and frustrating, but I believe the program still has a bright future under CNC. We have two outstanding freshman, and injuries have been a big factor in consistency this year.

There is a certain group of posters who will say nothing positive after a win but you sure see their idiotic posts criticizing everyone and everything after a loss.

My heart bleeds for the ladies. They played so hard and let it slip away with turnovers late in the game. Time to regroup. There is still a lot to play for.

The three point shot that tied the game would have never been made if it hadn't been for the obvious/blatant foul that wasn't called which allowed OU to get the ball back and throw up the desperation shot. You have to wonder, did they not see it or just refuse to acknowledge it?

So, anyone who is not acting as if the program is in ruins has their head in the sand? Really? We won the Big 12 last year and we're still in the hunt for another title despite injuries and a key transfer who ended up not being available due to the pettiness of her former coach. The players genuinely seem to like CNC, who is clearly incredibly knowledgeable and deserves to be given time to implement her system and get a few recruiting classes together. If after year 4 or 5 we're not performing to expectations, then sure we can move on. The sense of entitlement and unrealistic expectations among those who seem to post nothing but negativity about CNC and the team on this forum are the ones whose views aren't aligned with reality. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but not to their own facts, and I simply can't see any facts that would justify the level of anger and hostility toward CNC and Mack Rhodes by some posters other than they're upset CKM left Baylor and who want to continue venting their anger about something that happened two years ago.

You think this team is still in contention for a Big 12 Title? Now THAT is funny. The OP is correct. This team is not very good. But, more importantly, the coach is not very good. We are no longer an elite program. We are not even an average program. We are not good. Yes, we managed to win the conference last year. That was 100% because of Smith.

I have posted before that I am 110% support of CNC. She just has a team that is sloppy and Bickel is the only won that plays with enthusiasm.

......and Egbo and Jordan. All 3 were drafted into the pros. That's very rare to have that many in one year from any team because that draft is very limited.

Last time that happened at Baylor was in 2020 when Lauren Cox, T'ea Cooper and juicy Landrum got drafted as well

16-7 is "not even average"? I guess you are technically right, because that record is much better than average.

As far as being elite, if you are defining elite as the dominant Baylor teams from the 2020-21 season and before then there are only a handful of teams with such won-loss records these days. And South Carolina is really the only team that is dominant. All of the other teams with three losses or less have played multiple games that went down to the wire. That includes Mulkey's LSU, which while unbeaten has barely won in four out of their last five games.
