The 1-3-1: Baylor (16-9, 7-6) vs No. 22 Iowa State (16-7, 8-5)

February 17, 2023

Baylor (16-9, 7-6) will have the opportunity to end a historically bad three-game conference skid on Saturday as they welcome No. 22 Iowa State (16-7, 8-5) into the Ferrell Center for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off as part of their annual Play4Kay game.

The Cyclones join No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 17 Texas as the only ranked teams representing the Big 12, while Baylor holds a 76-70 victory over Iowa State in their first meeting earlier this season.

Iowa State comes into this game off a 66-61 victory over Texas in their last outing — snapping a seven-game drought against the Horns — which ended a three-game conference losing streak of their own.

Here is the 1-3-1 on Baylor vs Iowa State.

One Player:

During the first meeting this season, Iowa State guard Ashley Joens gave the Bears all they could handle with a 23-point performance, despite shooting just 1-9 from behind the arc. The Cyclones love to shoot the ball from downtown and are just one 3-pointer away from hitting 200 in a season for the 21st consecutive campaign.

Joens is one of the biggest reasons for Iowa State’s success this season, and she currently needs three points to pass Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley (2007-10) for second in Big 12 history and 24th in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball history in career scoring. Joens enters Saturday's contest with 2,833 career points.

Three Nuggets:

  • On Monday, head coach Bill Fennelly became the 27th coach in NCAA Women's Basketball history to reach 750 career victories.
  • The Cyclones have made at least one 3-point field goal in an NCAA-record 885 consecutive games, a streak that encapsulates the entirety of the Bill Fennelly Era at Iowa State.
  • Baylor holds the 33-9 advantage in the all-time series with Iowa State and the Cyclones have won just two games in Waco.

One Concern:

Wednesday’s loss to Kansas State magnified the lack of depth and scoring threats along Baylor’s roster. The Bears played every player available, including Freshman Kyla Abraham, who logged a career-high 13 minutes in her second-straight game off the bench.

Baylor can’t afford to get in foul trouble against the Cyclones as they did against Kansas State on Wednesday when Caitlin Bickle played just one minute in the third quarter and fouled out halfway through the final quarter of play. Bella Fontlery also struggled with fouls finishing the night with four.

While Ja’Mee Asberry had a career night against the Wildcats — season-high 21 points in her first 20-plus point game of the year and 22nd in her career — Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (16pts) was the only other Bear to reach double figures.

Watch/Listen:

The contest between the Bears and the Cyclones is available for streaming via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. A live radio broadcast is also available for fans on the Varsity Network App or locally on 1660 AM/92.3 FM. Additionally, live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter or live stats.

Better. But, still a loss.

Still don't like CNCs in game coaching.

We've shot 26 threes and hit 5 of them. At some point our new coach will realize that we should drive to the paint.
That's giving her a lot of credit at this stage. We haven't hit a high percentage shots from out there all year, why would she pay attention now. The game plan works in the WNBA because you have a team of high caliber shooters. Everyone is great at that level. It isn't feasible at the college level. Iowa State has had arguably one of if not the best 3-point shooting team in the country for the last decade. How many conference championships have they won? It's a joke. We should have won today. Every time we got up by 5 or 6 we'd come down and jack up a 3. Granted no one drove into traffic to create a turn over. But the inability of this team to put together a full game is exhausting. No lead is safe when you rely so heavily on the 3 ball. That said, our freshman are good. But they will eventually have a desire to be on a winning team.

Drive the paint and use the long arms of Buggs to get a decent look at the basket.

I prefer to play the role of the dominant team, not the spoiler. We've become the spoiler. Worth noting - if Mulkey was leading this group of players, we'd likely be undefeated and disciplined. The conference isn't a grind - we've just joined the average performers and now it feels that way. Baylor has regressed, the conference hasn't gotten better.

But if we do that then our guards and forwards can't shoot the 3 ball. That is our bread and butter., Why would we ever do that?

Somebody had to win. Somebody had to lose. Neither team will scarcely make ripples if they get a NCAA bid.
If you took the top 6 players off both these teams you still wouldn't have a final four contender.

I'm interested to see how Ashley fairs in the WNBA. Bill teaches his players to back their butt and just dribble around and then make a move. I'd like to see Aja or Stewie's response to that. But yes, neither team will make it to the second weekend. Though I am not sure we are a tournament caliber team at this point. That said, I'm sure Linda was happy with today and will say that a great energy was brought to the Ferrell Center

I'd hate to be part of the media tonight. What do you ask today that you didn't ask last week? And what does CNC say? She can only create so many soundbites before people start calling bull. She sounded like a broken record after the K-State game. Surely she's gotten some new material.

Tough loss. One thing (among others) that is puzzling to me is why Bickle fouls out so often. Knowing her importance to the team, why doesn't she play a little more conservatively? It's something that even coach Collen has brought up in her pressers.

At this point Baylor appears to have tired legs.

The one silver lining for this team is the play of the two freshmen. Littlepage-Buggs and Fontleroy are already good college players. If they take a step up in their sophomore season, with the addition of Edwards (possibly Blackwell) and whomever Baylor is able to add from the transfer portal, Baylor has a decent shot at being a top 10 team in 2023-24.

I'm not convinced she knows how. While I do think she creates a solid game plan, she reminds me of Aston in that the second the game goes in a different direction, she's done. Mulkey knew that and always used that to her advantage. She also hasn't adjusted her style to fit the best style for her players. Maybe Buggs is an example of how she can coach with her own players - but I don't see it currently. Buggs was having to create her own opportunities. No one is going to come to Baylor and play the post if they are never fed the ball unless it's from up top. And none of the players are going to get drafted if they aren't on a team that wins. It's a circle ... and right now we're in a bad loop.

Hey coach….. maybe stop allowing them to shoot the three. How about that 19%. _ again.

Maybe coach driving and the mid range game.

That 100000% coaching. Or lack there of.

ISU could not have played worse. The box score is unreal. Bickle 3-12, Asberry 3-15, Owens 4-12, and Andrews 3-19!!!! Good gosh!! And we had it won multiple times.

Piggybacking on Max R.,the freshmen are already good high major players. They played extremely well during crunch time, the veterans not so much.

How about us making our free throws down the stretch .. we lost to OU and now ISU because me could not convert at free throw line … this is not coaching it is poor execution … given the talent and size of this team there is little room for error. I am not going to point to one player but in our close loses failure at the free throw line late has led to our downfall. We just need to keep grinding.

"Likely be undefeated" my foot. That's nonsense. And yes, the league HAS gotten better.

If free throws were made in the end (just 1, not both) , we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I did like seeing the freshmen grow up a little more tonight.

We'll agree to disagree on this one. I honestly don't think we've played an Elite 8 team all season. Discipline goes a long way. That is my main criticism of CNC. That and in game adjustments. But the lack of discipline is what has lost of several games. We've been run out of the gym on a handful of occasions, but I don't think we've been outmatched talent wise this season. I'll give the Blackwell excuse some weight, as we'd probably have 3-4 less losses had she been there. But we cater to the outside shooting and we cannot shoot consistently from there.

I find it interesting, once again, that it's been hours and we still don't have a post game article from the board admins. Is no one following this team anymore?

The league has not gotten better it has gotten mediocre. Since OU droppped off the map it has hasically been a Baylor/UT conference with ISU sneaking in for an upset occasionally. All three teams are down.

And all of this a quality coach recognizes and adjusts to mid game. That is, in large part, the issue

You do have to learn from the game as to whom to get the ball to at the end of regulation and overtime Asberry missed 5 or 6 shots and two very important free throws that would have won us the game. Asberry tries to avoid contact when driving to the bucket and throws up desperation shots which get blocked or missed. You have to drive into the defenders chest and inside the paint you will get that call. But when you get the call you must make your free throws. Let Sarah or Jordan drive and crash the boards and hope for free throws or rebounds. We turn over many of our post passes so that is not a final shot option. Also Bickle has to find a way to stay in games. We need her rebounds and offense at the end of games. Jan VanG should take some of Asberry's minutes. We are hurt by both her offense and defense and critical free throws right now. We are also going to need to work on conditioning if we are going to play our starters extended minutes. We should be a much better team next year. Arguably our two best players are cheerleaders.

Didn't watch the game live since I was at work. Damn I can't believe we almost won!! And why is asberry still starting. She has to be one of the worst starting shooting/wing guards we've had in a while

Like I have said many times, Coach has nose dived the program in one year. No other way to say it.

Attendance down
Wins down
Loses up.
In game coaching down
Adjustments down

Hmmmmmm
