Baylor Baseball Swept by Duke, Loses 10-3 in Finale
DURHAM, N.C. – Baylor Baseball (2-5) could not avoid the sweep and fell to Duke (5-2), 10-3, on Sunday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Despite blowout losses in consecutive games, the Bears fought hard on Sunday but couldn’t overcome late defensive miscues.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior RHP Cole Stasio had a runner on second with one out. However, a passed ball on Harrison Caley advanced the runner to third. And Kobe Andrade dropped a routine fly ball in center field allowing Duke to score the go-ahead run.
Once the Blue Devils regained the lead, they began to pile on the offense and added six runs in the eighth.
Sophomore Mason Marriott gave Baylor its best start of the young season. In 4.2 innings of work, Marriott allowed three hits, three earned runs and struck out seven on 92 pitches.
However, command was still an issue for Marriott on Sunday. The Tomball native walked three and hit one batter.
Sophomore Hunter Teplanszky hit a game-tying RBI double in the top of the sixth.
In consecutive games, Baylor’s pitching staff allowed the Duke leadoff hitter to get aboard in six of the game’s eight innings. The Bears also only had three 1, 2, 3 innings over the course of the weekend.
The BU offense struck out 15 times on Sunday, 41 times on the weekend and was outscored by Duke in the series, 52-7.
