Baylor Baseball Ends Losing Streak, Beats Stephen F. Austin 10-3
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (10-19) ended its seven-game losing streak with a 10-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin (13-14) Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears' offense led the way with 13 hits. Sophomore first baseman John Ceccoli went 3-4 at the plate with a home run, a double and four RBIs, while junior left fielder Hunter Simmons went 4-4 with a double and two RBIs
“I think up and down the lineup, we were pretty competitive,” coach Mitch Thompson said after the win.
“I thought we swung the bats well. I thought the confidence was good. Obviously, when you score 10 runs, you are doing something right, so that’s fun.”
In the bottom of the second inning, Ceccoli put the Bears on the board after smoking an RBI double off of the right-centerfield wall.
An inning later, Simmons lined an RBI single into centerfield to score junior Cole Posey and give Baylor the 2-1 lead.
The Bears put up a three-spot in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1 after RBI singles from Simmons and Ceccoli. Junior two-way player Cole Tremain also added a sacrifice fly in the inning, it was Tremain’s fourth RBI in three games.
In the seventh, Ceccoli added his second extra-base hit of the night with a towering two-run homer over the right field wall for his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
“Anytime your offense is able to click one through nine, it’s really fun to watch it happen and be a part of it,” Ceccoli said after his four-RBI game.
Despite SFA picking up a run in the top of the first, Baylor’s pitching staff settled in nicely and shoved seven consecutive shutout frames.
“I think the bullpen was all sharp,” Thompson said. “We kept everybody down enough pitch-count-wise that we’ll be in good shape for this weekend to start on Thursday.”
Juniors Jared Matheson, Grant Golomb, Anderson Needham, Cole Stasio and Brett Garcia combined to pitch eight innings and allowed one earned run, walked three batters and struck out seven.
Sophomore righty Gabe Craig entered in the ninth and surrendered two runs; only one was earned.

W: Grant Golomb (1-1) L: Reid Bowyer (1-1)
