The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from Baylor's Week of Sports
A marvelous weekend for softball, an important addition for MBB, and the end of the road for a couple of squads.
Here's a look at The Good, The Bad & The Ugly from the past week in Baylor Athletics.
THE GOOD
Softball Sweep — It was an incredible final weekend of the regular season for No. 20 Baylor softball as the Bears swept No. 5 Texas at Baylor Ballpark. And that despite ace pitcher Dariana Orme resting all weekend. Freshman pitcher Rylee Crandall threw a gem on Friday, and the offense followed in kind with a 9-1 run-rule victory over the Longhorns in the opener. Saturday saw Kaci West earn the W on the mound with Crandall's help as a closer in a 5-2 series win. And then, on Sunday, an exhilarating walk-off dub thanks to catcher Zadie LaValley putting the ball in play, which resulted in the tying and game-winning runs for the sweep on Senior Day. Riding high, the Bears head to the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City, where they'll open play as the 4-seed against Iowa State on Wednesday.
Yves Missi — Baylor MBB will officially welcome Missi to the team a year earlier than initially scheduled. The Cameroon-turned-California center reclassified to the 2022 class, now arriving next season with Ja'Kobe Walter and Miro Little. With Missi's addition, that's a heck of an incoming youthful trio on paper, and another answer question answered for 2023.
Grant Miller — Although it took a little longer than others, it was great to see Miller added to the list of undrafted free agent signees as he inked a deal with the Rams. Besides Siaki Ika, the draft wasn't all that memorable this year, but many Bears are getting undrafted chances. Of course, the most important stat is who sticks with a team, but while the odds remain long, they're better than zero for Miller after last week.
Postseason Golf Announced — The No. 12 women's team is a 2-seed in the Pullman regional, which begins today (Monday). Meanwhile, the men's team is a six-seed in next week's Morgan Hill Regional in California.
Streak Breaker — Baseball (16-30) got off the schneid with a 12-6 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday. It was a refreshing positive entering an off weekend. Two weeks remain in the regular season. That includes hosting Grand Canyon and Tuesday and Lamar on Wednesday before heading to Fort Worth for their final conference series of the year against TCU this weekend.
Women's Tennis — The Bears rallied from a 3-1 deficit to earn a 4-3 opening-round NCAA Tournament win over SMU down in College Station. A thrilling victory, but unfortunately, the celebration didn't last long.
THE BAD
Goodbye, Team Tennis Seasons — The women's team (17-14) won their NCAA Tourney opener over the Mustangs, but the next day the team's season came to a close in shutout fashion, falling to regional host and No. 2 national seed Texas A&M, 4-0, in the Super Regional.
The men's team (17-16) was quickly swept out of the postseason, falling 4-0 to No. 18 Florida State in the Columbia, SC regional. However, on the NCAA Individuals front, Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz will compete for a title in doubles action later this month.
Baseball Drops One — Before the win over TAMU-CC, the Bears dropped their Tuesday game to ACU, 9-8, despite an impactful return to the lineup for OF Hunter Simmons following a 10-game injury absence.
