Keyonte George Selected No. 16 Overall in the NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz
NEW YORK — Baylor Basketball star freshman guard Keyonte George was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 16th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.
George is now the fifth Bear to hear his name called in the last three years and the third to be selected in the first round. Davion Mitchell and Jeremy Sochan were both taken with the ninth overall pick in 2021 and 2022 by the Sacramento Kings and the San Antonio Spurs respectively.
George met the middle of his pre-draft projections where he fluctuated from the back end of the top 10 to the mid 20s.
Throughout George’s time at Baylor, he started in all 33 games he played, averaging 15.3 points on 37.6% shooting, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists. According to KenPom, he had a usage rate of 30% and posted an effective field goal percentage of 47 and a true shooting percentage of 52.4.
He was also named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year while finishing the regular season sixth in the conference in scoring (16.0), fifth in three-point field goals made per game (2.4) and sixth in free throw percentage (.794). George holds the Baylor program record for most 20-point games by a freshman (12), and his 16.0 points per game were the sixth-most among all freshmen in NCAA Division I.
