Ten Things Vs. Texas State

September 2, 2023
24,143

Baylor hosted Texas State on Saturday and here are the ten things that stood out during the game.

  1. Stupid penalties early from the young players moved Baylor behind the sticks
  2. Shapen has taken too many hits from the right side of the offensive line on pass plays. It's time to try out another tackle. The left guard getting dominated as well with reaching for blocks and not setting a base.
  3. If you can’t trust Isaiah Hankins, who can you trust?
  4. Defensive line and linebackers are getting whipped up front. The defensive line also overpursuing and did not wrap up Finley
  5. Great drive by Baylor with Blake Shapen‍ taking it in on a run he may not have done in 2022. Dominic Richardson‍ had a great run in the drive to give the line some confidence. Shapen is hurt, and he might be favoring the knee a little too much for it to be a bruise
  6. The offense came out to play on the first drive, and the defense needs to do the same
  7. Unfortunately, undisciplined defensive play continues in the second half. Linebackers and safeties making poor reads on play action and mesh plays. Safeties not being able to get back and soft coverage called for the corners.
  8. The secondary has too much talent to play at this level
  9. Shapen might be done with injury, and everyone gets a view of Robertson. The brace on Shapen’s knee while he tries to get used to feeling it while warming up appears to be structural knee damage, but make no mistake this loss is on the defense and would have happened with a healthy Shapen if he comes back into the game.
  10. Shapen is playing like a warrior and the staff has told him to get off the field before more damage is done
  11. The offensive line has chased their opponent like the defensive backs have chased theirs
  12. It's a horrible loss, and the trajectory has been trending in the wrong direction since last season. It makes an AD get a list ready if the slide doesn’t stop

So right on! I have heard so many homers on this board talk about our great talent level and how frustrating our performances since mid last season have been given our "talent level" - talent?? There is no elite talent anywhere on the field - TXState was bigger, faster stronger and a ton more energy- talent my arse……what a joke

That's a lot of unnecessary writing for ...

1. We suck.
2. We suck.
3. We suck.
4. We suck.
5. We suck.
6. We suck.
7. We suck.
8. We suck.
9. We suck.
10. We suck.

Whether or not this gets read, it felt good to write. Hopefully I'm wrong, and odds are I'm way off base here but, my top 10:

1) We've been fed this joke of a line that "we have young talent in the secondary" when we just flat out do not have the dudes. It feels like everyone covering the team seems to think we have a young undeveloped Derwin James starting. We have seen nothing but a few flash plays and overwhelming failure in the secondary.
2) Powledge was advertised as some great energizer and a good solution. In reality the only basis for that optimism was that he coached an already talented secondary group of seniors in '21.
3) Not going further to address the O-line in the portal and banking on "oh Matteos will fix it" was an outrageous expectation.
4) D-line was underwhelming last year even with Ika, why on earth did we expect them to be better this year? "They have potential" is just not good enough, they are seniors if they haven't made that step by now, the default expectation should be that they'll be about as good as last year.
5) LB play has regressed.
6) We will never know which QB should start when the OL at best puts him in a 10 yard hole from false starts every series, and at worst lets him get hit to the point of injury.
7) the anti Shapen takes based off of tonight are dumb.
8) Getting an extra TE when were already loaded at that position and could have gotten another piece in the secondary, or on the OL, in retrospect seems puzzling to put it lightly.
9) Everyone should be severely concerned about this staff's ability to evaluate and develop talent, and ability to coach out the stupid mistakes.
10) I can't put into words how awful this feels saying that Aranda should be on the hot seat but he should. He is so likable, and by all accounts is a great man who has represented the university nothing short of impeccably. Rooting for him still, but hate to admit it, he may not be the guy and if he can't turn it around we need to consider other options. I want to say "Give him a season to turn it around" but we just lost by double digits to Texas State. It's not getting turned around. This is a one win team.

I'm right there with you on No. 10. I genuinely like Dave Aranda the man and everything he stands for. I want him to succeed. But everything that's happened since the end of the 2021 season has me doubting that that will happen at Baylor.

And if we have another losing season this year, our choices will be to either move on with another coach or proceed with a coach no one has confidence in to turn things around, and watch our team play in front of 25,000 every home game in 2024.

But the talking heads on Premium who "really know" said we just didn't know football when saying that BU has internal issues and 2021 was a fluke. But hey, you think Texas State makes the playoff this year? Because it can't be BU or Rhodes.

1. LSU's offense and Joe Borrow won that natty, not Arandas "great defensive mind" the only decent season he has had was with Matt Rhules group of Super seniors.
2. Can he seriously even lead a power five team? 2020, he garnered 0 respect from the offense. 2021 was a fluke, 2022 was a joke with a hyped D-line that struggled all year. And now we seem to have the same problems again this year.
3. Can we see a little passion, emotion, something!?!? How can you expect to get a team hyped up when your only demeanor is Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. They play with the same energy I see out of Aranda at every press conference.
4. This has not been mentioned and may unfortunately be the biggest takeaway from this game… the "young offensive mind" seems to have gotten a lot of teams a long way. GJ Kinne made Aranda and Grimes look like dinosaurs. His play calling and player atmosphere was second to none. AD really needs to start exploring getting him on campus asap!
5. If Texas States offense did that to us it will be a miracle if we hold Utah to less than 72 points next week. Defensive mind my arse.

I am no talent guru but it looked like Texas State just had better players than Baylor. IDK if that is strategic NIL well spent, recruiting, development, offensive and defensive schemes, coaching or all of the above or maybe something else.

Deja vu: I will be nice. Is it basketball season yet?

Here we go again with an unprepared, not very talented, poorly coached, and undisciplined team.

This is what we can expect for 2023. Will and when will MR say enough is enough?

Parker Ogeron's pop is available.
Rewatching yesterday I feel pretty confident about the Sharks week 3. But this is 1-11 staring us in the face.
I hope Shapin is OK. Never want to see anyone injured. Especially in a fluff game. Hopeful we can turn it around soon.

Empty stadiums speak volumes. The Baylor Line always shows up the best for the first game. The line and our fans will stop coming to games soon. We're headed for Wendy's tickets and a tarp.

Despite all the talk about it, it looks pretty obvious to me that Baylor is WELL behind on the NIL business & it will take some effort to get competitive in regards to NIL.

This is spot on.

As others have said, I like Aranda and think he is a solid individual. Doesn't mean he's capable of assembling a staff and being a head coach at the D1 level.

Looking at the recruiting data, BU has been in the same range of 30-35 from Rhule until now. 20 & 21 we had a dip to 54 and 60.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Aranda has put together a sub-standard staff that can't retain and develop players. We are worse now than when he got here. How did the Barrington Brothers go from being competent at BYU to getting pushed around by Texas State? What did the BYU fans say about losing them? Were they overrated? They were sold to BU fans as legit B12 OL.

Not going to disagree with most of these but #3.

I thought we did hit the portal on the OLine.

Thank you! I am with you. The OL transfers sold as difference makers. Did BYU fans say anything about the brothers? Were they any good?
Oso_Verde94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's a fair point. I guess my reasoning is we could have gotten one more instead of a TE, given that by all accounts our TE room appeared to be more than adequate. It probably is more connected to #9, we should be worried that they didn't evaluate or develop them from the looks of it before taking them as transfers.
