The Underrated Performer for Baylor against Texas
Despite getting embarrassed at home by No. 3 Texas (4-0) 38-6 on Saturday night, Baylor (1-3) was able to show some slight improvements within their passing attack, and the Bears were able to force some much-needed turnovers at times.
It was pretty evident from the opening kick that Baylor wasn’t going to be able to compete in the trenches against the Longhorns or match them talent-wise athlete-for-athlete. The Bears however were able to make some crucial plays on special teams, but unfortunately, they wouldn’t be enough.
This week’s Underrated Player goes to redshirt sophomore and coaches kid, Garrison Grimes. Grimes was able to flip the momentum into Baylor’s favor twice by recovering two muffed punts from Texas’ Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington. It was the first time that Grimes was able to recover fumbles in his career, but the Baylor offense wasn’t able to convert either into touchdowns.
The Bears had an opportunity to find paydirt on the first fumble recovered by Grimes at the Baylor 19-yard line, but instead, Sawyer Robertson was sacked for a 10-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from 5 yards out.
Baylor’s red zone offense continues to be a massive concern. The Bears were 2-of-6 on red zone opportunities against the Longhorns, with the only points coming via field goals by sophomore kicker Isaiah Hankins.
The Bears will look to find their first Big 12 victory of the season next week, as they travel to The Bounce House next Saturday in Orlando to face UCF (3-1) in the Knights home opener as a Big 12 squad.
