If we can't afford to fire him, Rhoads made a huge mistake in negotiating that contract. Leaving us in such an untenable position is enough reason for him to go.
I don't think anyone, certainly not me, would disagree with you. But giving out that contract is water under the bridge at this point. Now we are dealing with realities of a big buyout that from what we read here is a problem for finding the sources of money to do it. We can fire Rhoades, but we still have the same problem, unless firing Rhoades would make some donors happy. No way to know that. But if we can't come up with the needed money from some source, if money is the problem, we are stuck regardless of how we feel about the situation.

The irony, if that is the right word, is that most posters here were relieved and elated when that contract extension was offered and signed to keep Aranda here amid all the fretting that he was going to move on to bigger gigs. That doesn't change the situation we are in now if a mistake was not thinking about the possibilities of needing an early exit situation, but we really don't know the details, at least I don't. We posters have the luxury of flipping our stance when our money is not involved.

I have no idea what the guy wrote because I am not a premium member, but if I just read that he says Aranda will be brought back. I can't disagree. Doesn't say I want that, but do you guys really think he won't be here next year (unless he resigns)?

You can line up all the arguments why keeping him is a real bad idea, but I am just going to be really surprised if he is fired. I guess primarily because of the money situation. And on that you can say that is the ADs job to get it, and it is, but if people are not going to provide the money, the AD can do anything and everything but if those people that have the money are not providing it, they are not providing it....it is not there and nothing of significance can change.

If this is true, and it might be, Rhoades will be fired halfway through next Fall and Aranda will be fired a year from now.
Wouldnt we fire the AD this school year so a new one can evaluate the football situation? It makes no sense to fire the AD a couple of weeks prior to firing the HC.

That won't happen. We'd wait until Aranda is clearly a failure next year, then presumably try for a quick AD hire so he can hire the new coach. That's my thought anyway, which is worth little.

I agree he earned a raise and extension 2 years ago. What would've been dumb is to give him a large buyout for future seasons as he'd only coached one real season at that point. Having a large one for Briles in 2016 made a ton of sense: he'd built us from nothing, won a Heisman, and won two conference titles over a span of 4 years. Aranda had one good season.

Sure, we are where we are. And we go forward.

Part of that is evaluating our AD. One of the most critical part of the AD's job is managing our coaches, including through their contracts. If he gave Aranda a deal with a buyout that we just simply could not digest, and he did it based on one season where Aranda was coaching someone else's players, then he was imprudent and foolish. If he has no more insight into our athletic program nor more foresight than our average fan, then we need to go do better.

When you have Regents and Administrators willing to throw out a great coach rather that deal with the same problem as other programs did and work to correct those problems. When you squander typically good recruiting years. When you bring in a culture that emphasizes person over player. When you fire coordinators who use fowl language or yell at players when they are excellent coaches. When you expect the players to provide the leadership and motivation. And when you are left with coaches who seem incapable of improving player performance or in motivating players, you end up with a program in such decline that everyone wants out. I remember the Beall era. It wasn't pretty. And certainly not easy to correct.

If there are "who you can sign" rules which I don't believe there are….Matt Rhule assembled a Big 12 Championship roster under the same alleged circumstances.

He doesn't deserve more time…rip the band aid off and move on.

we have a larger than one year problem to fix. new coordinators will next more time than one year to install and recruited. we lost it with Joey and Blanchard leaving. Recruiting has been bad for 2 and now 3 classes. With the portal we could lose the few talented guys we have. e need a start over and a one year delay will not solve the problem. We need Texas roots guys this time. Ours moved to Lubbock. Tech is recruiting and building and we are not.bid mistakes - keep our a.d. away from men's basketball.
