Gameday Thread: No. 4 Baylor at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – The No. 4 Baylor women’s basketball team makes its way to Hilton Coliseum on Saturday to face off against Iowa State at noon.

The game is available for streaming via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. A live radio broadcast will be available on ESPN Central Texas(1660 AM/92.3 FM), and live in-game updates will be provided via Twitter and live stats.

STARTING FIVE

Saturday’s meeting between Baylor and Iowa State is the lone contest between the two programs this season.

Dre’Una Edwards and Aijha Blackwell have each finished in double figures on the boards in four games this year. Blackwell has turned in double-digit rebounds in two-straight games heading into Saturday’s contest at Iowa State.

Sarah Andrews has 207 career 3-pointers and needs 52 more to break Odyssey Sim’s record of 258. The senior guard has hit at least two from range in 14 of 15 games this year.

Baylor is one of four teams in the country, joining Kansas, Mississippi State and Louisville, with five 1,000-point scorers on its roster. Yaya Felder is the latest member of the 1,000-point club after recording the final point in BU’s 87-58 win over Houston on Jan. 6.

The Bears were named the NCAA.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Jan. 9 for their impressive wins over then-No. 23 TCU and Houston at home last week.

SCOUTING THE SERIES WITH IOWA STATE

Baylor is 33-11 all-time against Iowa State and 12-6 in Ames. The Bears and the Cyclones faced each other three times last season with Iowa State taking two of three meetings, including the

quarterfinal matchup in at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships in Kansas City.

In Baylor’s win over the Cyclones last season, BU outlasted then-No. 12 Iowa State, 76-70, at Hilton Coliseum behind Sarah Andrews’ team-high 21 points. Over the last 10 meetings, Baylor holds the slim 6-4 advantage in the series.

They are getting hard to watch .. missing high school shots & no blocking out .. it's a mess

We definitely need to work on rebounding

Even LPB seems off

Eerily similar to our men's Michigan St/Duke road trip.

I don't see what Lety brings to this team.

You can't teach 6-7. She is young and moves well for size but has a lot of work to do. Kids that big get in bad habits cause they dominate at lower levels. She needs work on footwork and technique

Her shot is awful, and she can't defend.

The last player that I was so challenged to understand how she got a scholarship from Baylor was Alyssa Dry.

With the new rules you just wave a big snail check in front of her and she is in green and gold….

On her last shot, she just backed down Lety by putting her butt in her stomach. Lety just needed to keep her hands/arms straight up. Crooks probably would have missed it. Lety bailed her out.

Disappointing loss, the Lady Bears need to learn how to finish games - this game was there for the taking.
Bad game for the refs but they gifted BU 6 points they shouldn't have had. Jada clearly travelled on her three quarter court heave that went in, and Blackwell clearly double dribbled before kicking the ball out to Edwards (i think) who hit a 3 pointer. Those 6 points were gifted by bad ref no calls.
Lots of season left to play, the Lady Bears need to get their mojo back and start stacking up some wins.

Lety is a freshman. It takes time to develop most bigs. She was highly recruited and brings 6'7" to team. If she can develop she will be a weapon in future seasons,

I would have liked to see Lety front her and dare them to throw it to Crooks over her. They had already screwed that up a couple of times. But she is a freshman and needs development. I don't think Lauren Cox looked all that great her freshman year, far from what she turned out to be. Not comparing the two, but the college game is different. Hope we are able to give her more playing time prior to the tournaments.

#4 two losses by non ranked teams. Will drop like the Titanic. #17-19 range.

I don't think so either. Despite the losses, they still are a great team. They should learn much from these two games and it should make them better going forward. But they still might some more before March. The Big 12 is tough.

Well, at least we know what kind of team we DON"T have. Such poor playing. No defense and the turnovers are just unacceptable.

Deja vu. Last year raising it's ugly head.

Not surprised. I think we will struggle against teams that have a big (center) presence because we do not have the size and especially the physicality like Caitlin (Bickle) brought last year. Caitlin had a height disadvantage some games but, she was good at defense and was equally physical with the other teams bigs. Not sure you can get someone to step up and play with a little more physicality on defense and box out/rebound the ball but, we need that going into Big 12 play. Maybe Blackwell?

Used to love to watch Bickle go against Naz Hillman from Michigan because that was 2 girls working hard against each other and Cailtin was equal to the task.

I really think the style that Coach leads to turnovers and marginal d. Last two years shows that.

When you don't have two first round picks it shows what her focus is. Smith and Queen fixed so much.

We will see. Coach has all her own players now Outside of Sarah.

Let's see how she coaches with adversity.

Literally need to reevaluate our rotations, we have a strong bench for a reason but none the less, some of our girls were so tired they could barely run the floor. We are a great team but we need to start rotating our girls better so they're fresh and we need to start playing a variety of girls who have different skill sets. ( not all the same skill sets at a time).

Why is Jana and Denae sitting the bench? Two of the best shooters and defensive players on the team.

Very surprised to see Denae not getting more playing time. Losing her really hurt us Cyclone fans, especiallly leaving for Baylor. I wasn't at the game, but I didn't hear any boos toward her. Maybe because the students section was empty or because she barely plays.

Me too, but there are several very talented, more experienced guards ahead of her (Andrews, Walker, Felder) and she's having to make a big adjustment going from ISU to BU. Maybe its just a sophomore slump, but I suspect she'll get more minutes as time goes by & the players ahead of her move on.

I know this is on the WBB board, but after watching last night's game you could be describing the men's team. If you have a problem with how the women played you probably should go post similar comments on the men's board. Actually yesterday it could be argued the men played worse even though they scraped by considering they were playing at home against a relatively weaker team that wasn't at full strength than the women played on the road.

If you don't see enough to post criticism with the men's play of late, why the criticism with the women? The men had trouble stopping Cincy going to the basket, had some really bad turnovers, and had the opportunity to put the game out of reach and let the lead evaporate. Shooting wasn't all that hot either.

Just need to understand why you guys are so hard on the women when the men fail in similar ways. If you do criticize the men as such OK, that would be consistent. But if not, why the digs at the women and not the men?

I don't know much about individual posters, but quite a few fans follow MBB or WBB primarily and don't notice the other as much beyond wins v losses and scores.

I got off the men's board long ago as it was so negative to Scott Drew. WBB much more reserved in gripes on WBB board. Not sure if it changed after our men's Natty or not but just complete idiots talking down Drew.
historian
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There was way too much criticism of Drew no question. However I would characterize the boards in recent years of being very mixed. In fact much of the content praised Drew or at least was respectful.

Really bad last play call by Collen. Sorry peeps, but it was. Sarah was, obviously, having an off day.....Iowa State was solely keying on it......and you go to her for the most important, last shot of the game? Sorry, but they could have drawn up something much better and less obvious than that. Several other players can (and were) hit 3's.
