Positives
- Rob Wright (Fr.) definitely looks the part as a floor general. He scored 12 points, six assists and only one turnover in 28 minutes.
- Norchad Omier (5Sr.) gave us what we expected from him (15 points, nine rebounds) and only two fouls.
- VJ Edgecombe (Fr.) had a spectacular dunk on Mark Few’s son near the end of the game.
Concerns
- Ball movement was poor, and there was lots of isolation basketball.
- 3-point shooting was terrible (3-21); only Jalen Celestine (Sr.) shot it well (2-5).
- The defense was awful. Giving up 1.44 points per possession is about as bad as it gets. We know our size is not going to be a strength; we have to be menacing on the perimeter with quickness, and we definitely were not that this night.
- The effort on the defensive glass was equally terrible; Gonzaga grabbed nearly 50% of their misses.
It was a terrible blowout loss on the road, just like Marquette in 2022 and Michigan State in 2023. It’s the risk of playing great opponents, but that loss will be one we have to work all season to overcome in the computer metrics. A team with five of its seven rotation players as upperclassmen should not get rolled like that. Jeremy Roach (5Sr.) has to be better for us; we need his leadership and skill.
