No. 13 Texas Tech (18-4; 9-2) defeats Baylor (14-8; 6-5) in Lubbock 73-59. The Bears hope to have VJ Edgecombe (Fr.) and Langston Love (RJr.) back for UCF on Saturday in Waco.

Good

  • Jeremy Roach (5Sr.) played 38 minutes after returning from a concussion. He was rusty with his shooting touch (3-11), but he competed hard with 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and only one turnover. It was great to see him back in the lineup.
  • With three minutes left, Norchad Omier (5Sr.) goes to the foul line to shoot a one-and-one.  Baylor was only down five, and he had a chance to cut it to three and put a lot of game pressure on the Red Raiders. He misses. I think the depth issues caught up to Baylor down the stretch. Texas Tech went on an 11-2 run to finish the game.
  • Baylor should be "available” as a team for the first time since December against UCF on Saturday. This team needs a spirited crowd to help get this train rolling.
  • I’m good with the guys' effort, even on the glass (41-41 according to KenPom); 20-10 free throw attempts. I consider this a “depth” loss. Roach was rusty, no Edgecombe, no Love, Jalen Celestine (Sr.) was still limited athletically, Omier was playing on a gimpy knee and Jayden Nunn (Sr.) was dealing with a sickness. Hopefully, the Bears catch some breaks on the injury front the rest of the way.

Needs Work

  • There were only 12 turnovers, but too many early and late. Baylor was -5 in turnover margin, and usually, that is a strength for the Bears.
  • Texas Tech shot a good 3-point percentage (38%), but Baylor sure did leave them open on some. It could have been worse. The Red Raiders didn’t return the favor. Baylor got very few open looks from outside the arc.
  • Eight assists to 12 turnovers; Texas Tech was 15:8. It’s tough to win on the road with those margins.
