Positives
- The wings are as good as advertised. I came into the season expecting our four wings to be as good of a group as their is in college basketball. Dan Skillings Jr (17 points; 11 rebounds), Cameron Carr (20 points; 3 rebounds) and Tounde Yessoufou (21 points; 4 rebounds) all played outstanding games. Michael Rataj (3 points; 3 rebounds; 3 assists) had a tough outing, but I still expect him to be Baylor’s best player overall, so I’m not too worried.
- Free throw shooting was not good in Germany during the World University Games. Today, the Bears shot 13-14 (93%) from the foul line.
- I liked the energy off the bench. JJ White, Isaac Williams, Caden Powell and Mayo Soyoye all gave positive sparks with their activity.
- Obi Agbim had a rough shooting game (2-10), but he did have six assists and zero turnovers. He also made a few key plays when the game was on the line.
- 12-24 from 3-point range is terrific
Concerns
- Defense allowed too many straight-line drives that led to easy buckets in the paint. When the defense gave resistance, they racked up the fouls. Grand Canyon shot seven more free throws than Baylor. They converted 18 of theirs (86%), so the free throw defense was lacking.
- Baylor got a little wild with our shot selection in the paint at times. Tounde,, Dan and Cam all have a tendency to get a little out of control.
- Only 12 turnovers on the night but a few that led to easy transition points for Grand Canyon
