WACO, Texas – Baylor University is finalizing the hire of Doug McNamee as its new Director of Athletics, SicEm365 has learned.

McNamee graduated from Baylor in 2003 and spent over five years in the athletic department from 2012 to 2017. McNamee joined Baylor Athletics in 2012 as an Assistant AD for premium tickets with the Bear Foundation.

He quickly advanced to Senior Associate AD and, in 2015, assumed leadership of the Bear Foundation, where he played a key role in developing the strategy of the department’s annual giving program.

In 2017, McNamee was promoted to Senior Associate AD for External Relations, leading Baylor’s external relations team and directing development for communications, fan engagement, new media, the spirit program and ticket services. McNamee served on the search committee that helped hire head football coach Matt Rhule ahead of the 2017 season.

McNamee left Baylor Athletics to become the President of Magnolia in 2018 before taking over as President of Field & Stream, an outdoor-lifestyle brand, in 2022. He also worked closely with musicians Eric Church and Morgan Wallen on various marketing endeavors.

In the modern era of college athletics, McNamee’s business background can help Baylor oversee fundraising, branding, donor engagement and more to compete at the top of the Big 12.

McNamee has a close relationship with head basketball coach Scott Drew. He was a manager on the basketball team during his undergraduate years.

These responses will not age very well. This guy is a stud. Doug will thrive in this position and Baylor hit a grand slam with this hire.

Dave Bliss' former right-hand man is a grand slam hire? The man who was an AD employee for 2 of the biggest scandals in the history of college athletics? Oh, I'm sure this will play out wonderfully. Even better that he has no experience whatsoever as an AD.

Do our boosters love Doug?

I have to think so. That's the one thing that has me excited. He was there for the peak booster years. Plus his job was to raise money. He gets it. I am skeptical but if we are going to effectively make an internal hire, we could have done MUCH worse.

You think they couldn't* have hired Dickey then brought this guy back into the fold as Senior Associate AD for External Affairs? You think he would've been too tempted to stick around as a publisher for a **** digital magazine?

Would you like me to explain the concept of message boards to you?

It's obnoxious seeing post after post after post of Joey Maguire fanboys and whiny homos complaining that we hired some dude they never met versus some other dude they never met.

So glad we dodged that Joey bullet

He's terrible and has ZERO experience. Y'all are delusional. Literally got canned from a cupcake company because he was so bad.

What are you talking about??? Doug was finishing up his sophomore year at Baylor when the Bliss scandal went down.

Dude before you piss all over someone…take some time to do some real research.

Calling Magnolia a cupcake company is comical.

That may become true. Today, it feels really "brother in law ish." His resume does not support this hire.

He's not been around an athletic department in the NIl era. It's been 7 years since his last role in college athletics.

Honestly? Promoting from within makes more sense.

But is it true he was fired from that job?

The current climate is all about monetizing your brand and to an extent your players. What has Doug been doing for the last seven years?

Can't say on that… but Magnolia is certainly more than a cupcake company. I'm sure the city of Waco and Baylor would agree.

F'ing around with "Field and Stream" magazine. I don't see how it translates. Is this a hire, based on his last 7 years, another Power conference school makes?

He has been out of athletics for 8 years. No portal experience. No NIL experience. No revenue sharing experience. We needed an AD with relevant experience in the issues of today. Terrible decisions continuing.

Other than the NIL part, these "business" and "new kind of AD" are almost the 96 talking points for Stanton.

Absolutely not. After negotiating the Gaines' TV channel. He took his new gained knowledge of digital and media rights and created a new media company that acquired the Field and Stream rights. Pretty sure the Gaines are one of the investors in his media company.

Go and do some research…his company has absolutely nothing to do with a magazine.

If you have to explain it, it's failed. The resume doesn't support the hire.

I think this is the kind of AD that checks a lot of boxes. Look, I don't know him from Adam. But I'll take this kind of big time successful savvy business and image guy that has bled green and gold most of his life.

So many of the complaint threads here about game atmosphere, uniforms, brick tarps, concessions, tailgating, facilities, creative fund raising and NIL stuff that we badly need pumping up, this seems like an ideal guy to actually make some progress getting those things done.

I'll take this over a guy who stands on the sidelines with his arms crossed acting as the coach of the coaches and having brush ups with players he has no business messing with during games.

He's also a Drew guy. So we probably don't have to worry about the hoops program getting neglected.

And I'm pretty sure that as a true Baylor guy, he knows that Baylor football needs new direction. Whether that comes sooner than a little bit later, we'll see. But I don't think he'll take that task lightly. He'll turn over every stone to find the right guy. And he will know who to trust in helping him with that task.

I don't know nothin' from nothin', but I feel pretty good about this hire.

Sic' em!

From the Field And Stream website. He took control of it in 2024:

Quote:

2024: The Field & Stream brand relaunches, and brings back the beloved print magazine. To signal the brand's commitment to reconnecting to its history and heritage, they include "1871" within the new F&S logo, as a nod to the Gordon & Ferguson erawhen the "Field and Stream" brand first came into the lives of Americans

Correction from my previous comments:

Apparently Eric Church and Morgan Wallen put together an investment group that bought Field and Stream in January 2024, and brought in McNamee to run it, with the goal of restarting the print magazine that stopped in 2020.

We needed an AD with experience evaluating coaches, firing them, hiring new ones, negotiating contracts, NIL, revenue sharing, etc.

And we get one without even a wiki page….

And no experience in the above other than negotiating a tv channel launch and some business contracts. But NIL is not a contract.

I am not in the "this hire is terrible camp" but am also not in the "grand slam camp." Rather I am somewhere in between. Skeptical. A little underwhelmed.

Time will tell. And unfortunately if he is not up to the job it will set us back.

It's an outside the box and inside the box hire. He's apparently quite connected from his previous Baylor job.

He relaunched Field and Stream, helped expand Magnolia, and is buddies with Scott Drew.

College athletics isn't college athletics anymore. This dude's resume has branding and fundraising experience. That's what we need. We don't need an administrator. People under him can do that.

Frankly I'm not sure how anyone who was an adult by the late 80s and has vivid memories of the 97-09 isn't having PTSD today. Seriously I have not had such a bleak view of the future for Baylor football in particular since Memorial Day weekend of 16 and for Baylor sports in general since early Feb of 96. Literally every argument for trying to be positive about this I have heard here, you have to believe me, I have heard it all before in Feb of 96 about Stanton. Your arguments are not new at all.

This move is so bad I literally thought it was a troll job here for about ann hour until Baylor confirmed it.

But he was hired for his business contacts and BMD contacts and NIL. I think he ought to have us in the upper stratosphere of the XII in terms of NIL budget by next season. If he doesn't deliver almost immediately we already need to move on.

It's becoming increasingly clear that Baylor wants nothing to do with the outside world. They just want to operate like Alabama. And by that I mean they just want to bang their cousins.

I think you are on to something. If Mac had been bang his cousin he would still be here. Good point.
