Former Baylor men’s basketball player Jake Lindsey is returning to Waco to serve as the team’s general manager and as an assistant coach under Scott Drew, following four seasons as an assistant on Bryce Drew’s coaching staff at Grand Canyon University.

Lindsey was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams during his time at Baylor from 2015-2018 and helped the Bears achieve the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking in the AP Top-25 Poll in 2016-17.

As a junior during the 2017-2018 season, the 6-foot-5 guard played in 34 games and started 12, averaging 4.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while shooting 40% from beyond the arc. Lindsey had to medically retire before his senior season, but stayed in the program as a graduate assistant; he graduated cum laude with a finance degree.

Lindsey began his coaching career as a basketball operations intern and later as a college scout for the Utah Jazz, where he evaluated draft prospects and developed scouting reports. He also helped assist with pre-draft interviews and on-court draft workouts.

Following his stint in professional basketball, Lindsey returned to coach collegiately at Grand Canyon University, where Baylor head coach Scott Drew’s younger brother, Bryce Drew, is the program’s head coach. While at GCU, the Antelopes made the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years, which included an upset win over No. 5-seed St. Mary’s in 2024.

His father, Dennis, played collegiately at Baylor from 1987-1991 and has a long career in NBA front offices, originally starting as a scout and video coordinator with the Houston Rockets organization in the mid 1990s.

He went on to serve as the Assistant General Manager and Vice President of the San Antonio Spurs from 2007-2012, and later as the General Manager of the Utah Jazz from 2012-2019, and as the Executive Vice President from 2019-2021. He spent the 2023-2024 season as an advisor to the Dallas Mavericks before accepting a position as the Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons in 2024.

Apparently careers both on the court and off it as a player personnel guy run in the Lindsey family.

I like it. I hope his father will be named the GM of the Mavs.
