Athlon Sports ranks all 130 FBS head coaches; Matt Rhule top 50

July 2, 2018

Last Monday, Steven Lassan of AthlonSports.com ranked the entire group of 130 FBS coaches from 1-130 and gave a significant explanation on each as to why they received their ranking.

Coming off of a 1-11 in his first season with the Bears, Baylor head coach Matt Rhule could have easily landed among the bottom half of the list, but Lassan gave him some credit for his time at Temple and explained his understanding for his first season in Waco.

48. Matt Rhule, Baylor
As expected, Rhule's first season at Baylor was clearly a rebuilding year. The Bears finished 1-11 but lost five games by 10 points or less. However, the future outlook in Waco is promising for the New York native. Baylor has added back-to-back top-40 signing classes and a handful of talented young players are back (with added experience) for 2018. Prior to taking over at Baylor, Rhule had a successful 28-23 stint at Temple, which included back-to-back 10-win seasons. He also has stints in his coaching career as an assistant at Temple, Western Carolina, UCLA and in the NFL with the Giants.

The ranking of 48 could be seen as generous, but Rhule ranks ahead of just 25 Power Five coaches and behind 39 of them. In the Big 12, Rhule falls at No. 8 on the list.

15. Bill Snyder - Kansas State

No flame intended, but I would have loved to see where Briles was ranked on this list at our peak...

Win high, lose low. After first two seasons, Briles would have been low. At the end of his tenure, high.

Ole Kliff is down to his last chance I would think.

I think he topped at 8 or 9.

Here's hoping Jimbo leaves his job at a&m in the bottom 50.

I'm happy for Rhule, and I'm sure his success at Temple is the reason for the ranking. I hope he can do as well and better at BU.

Pretty fair rankings of the Big 12 coaches except for Rhule and Herman. They are both overrated even based on accomplishments at Temple & Cougar High, although Herman much moreso than Rhule.

I'd put him at top 10 in recruiting...all things considered. He wouldn't even put himself in top 50 "coaching" with a 1 win season. I Hope he's top 10 in both next season.

They say recruiting is half the battle. Agree last year was beyond acceptable on the field. All we can do in July is spend 2 months wondering if we turn it around this year. I think we do but we have 60 days to wait unfortunately.

I'd say his 1 win season was attributed to coaching. Didn't expect him to top the Big 12 but one win? New season just around the corner. Should be bowling in December. As for the list, after the top 10 or so, flip a coin.

They still only ranked Rhule 8th out of 10 Big 12 coaches. Hopefully, his ranking will improve as Baylor's record continues to improve.

Considering what he has accomplished since July, he should already be higher.

Because of Baylor's improvement, I was actually surprised Rhule's coach ranking wasn't higher.
